And yea, it was about bullying, but calling people names in general, or what this forum would consider flaming, really can bring a person down, even to the point of suicide...
It's not the words that caused him to kill himself it was the harsh vibes that he was getting from his peers. I call my friends "fags" and "gay" all the time but it doesn't have the same vibe that a bully would use. Words don't kill, they never have, they never will. Banning words is the comb-over of the anti-hate speech movement, you ban one word and people will come up with another to replace it. The problem isn't the words, its the environment we subject our children to.
Detention doesn't affect bullies.I fought back against my bullies but it never led anywhere. As a girl, I tended to be weaker, and I also didn't want to hurt anyone (lol!) and I sort of had a very bad clue regarding how to fight against these people, specifically...
Equinox brings up a very valid point here, it's not as easy as punching a kid in the face for girls, because they have physical differences from men, and the way society percieves them as how they "should" grow up. If a girl were to punch a girl, she would just be called a tom-boy and teased more, she cant punch all the girls, coz then she has an anger problem, then a mental problem gets labelled on her and she develops it through disbelief and everyone labelling her as having it.
As for detention, i believe it has an effect on the bullies, it's just conditioning, but the key is to really associate the bullying behaviour with the boredom of sitting in detention.
People should stop arguing about who is to blame, it's a mixture of all the things that have been mentioned in this thread. the teachers (bad ones) the way schools bullying systems work, and the individual kid(s) (bullies and bullied).
I know i was bullied, not as ferociously as this kid when i was that age, but i believe strong parenting from my father protected me from really 'feeling' the effects of the bullies. Suicide was not an option.
Some parents bring up strong kids, some bring up weak kids, this kid was unlucky to be bullied and he was weak, the end result for him death. Ultimately bullying will never be erradicated in all it's forms and this stuff will continue to happen, as i stated above strong character and will power through proper parenting is the key to minimizing these child suicides.
I can guarantee you that if a bully gets popped in the mouth by the kid he's attempting to bully, then that shit will stop. I've seen it happen many times.

Goddamn, I hate when you make valid points. I hate you! Lol.
No, but seriously, you are right. For example, humbug is a funny word today, but go back 30 or 40 years and it was the same as saying bullshit today in proper society.

Yes, it's true, but it all comes together to form the big problem of the school system, which is only a side effect of today's American Politics.
It truely scares me. I'm half tempted to go to Dutchland...

I feel bad for those situations, but it's not the words' fault. Not like it's going to change.
Most of the time, when I see a mest up kid, or a kid who did something extremely stupid, I would consider it the parent's fault. I know, it is a little harsh, and we can't control everything your kid does, but it is the parent who chooses the schools and the people who will be around your kid.
Also, many times when I see a mest up kid, I notice their parents are a little whacked out too. If you teach your kids to use common sense, teach them what is wrong with an iron fist, and can build a decent relationship with him; he will probably turn out good.
I know this isn't always true, sometimes people with bad, drunk parents turn out to be mature at age 9 because they are forced to, they end up ok..
Parenting is a very difficult subject to give an understanding, but I truly believe that the parents ultimately point the kid in the direction he will be the rest of his life. Like it was said in the movie Astronaut farmer (which I just finished seeing) when they are kids they want to be best friends with you, when they are teenagers they want nothing to do with you, and when they grow up they end up being just like you.
As a teenager, you feel suicidal half of the time lol, but it depends if you have the common sense to understand that this won't solve anything!
It is truly sad, and the adults in his life should've payed more attention to him, its a shame.

"Not Even Death Can Save You From Me" ~ Diablo (II)
My post before was talking about Australian schools and societies, i can't really comment on American culture in the education area, but from the sounds of it it's pretty brutal.
