I'm not sure I was really expecting D3 next year anyway, but this doesn't make the outlook any brighter.
However, if by chance D3 is actually and genuinely 'ready' to launch next year, I don't think Blizzard would hold back on doing so just to keep them in separate calendar years. Who knows, though.
This rough timeline makes sense to me, though:
SC2 beta this year -> SC2 launch next year -> D3 beta next year -> D3 launch first half of 2011 (basically following a year behind SC2's progression).
Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.
they say that they are having difficulties with battle.net, not the game. so im sure they have the game all tight and ready, but the service for the beta (battle.net) is not ready for the beta and needs work.
also, battle.net will already be ready for diablo 3 when it gets closer to its release date and we will not have to worry about issues like this.
At least I can now take a year off from even looking at D3 news, any more time spent here or any other D3 site is just a complete waste of time and emotion.
I got to be real honest here. Im really getting tire of Blizzards tactics of enducing hype to the media 3-5 years early, and making it look like said game is only a couple years away at max, of course, never actually saying anything other than a big "fuck you, it will be ready when its ready, bitches." type attitude.
When is the media going to jump on Blizzard for these tactics? Were else in business is there a company that releases this kind of hype leading people to believe the product is just around the corner, and then pushes back their completion schedule EVERY SINGLE TIME. It would be one thing if this happened 1 in 5 games, but when release date push backs happen every single time, when is it time to label Blizzard the same type of hype pushers as say, Peter Molyneux or The Segway.
Its terribly frustrating that as a customer to all their other games, and the billions of dollars that they have from said games, that they cant allocate enough money to meet deadlines and schedules in a timely & professional business manor. Why are they not putting some of that money back into the intrastructure in order to get these titles out without these push-backs?
Only in the video gaming industry would a company get away with this type of scheduling, and actually lead their competitors. Imagine if you had these push-backs every single time and you were a large scale building contractor.... simple put, you wouldn't be in business long.
I think Im getting to old to put up with Blizzards release date bullshit.
*nods*
I'm in the same boat.
Didn't care so much when I was younger, but now it's a little ridiculous...
I mean sure, they seem to be trying their best (I'd hope so anyways), but damn, they take a hell of a long time to release games.
Oh well, at least when they do release them, they're damn near perfect ^^.

I guess I'm the naive optimist in the crowd, but I guess I can't get too worked up and pissed about these things because I really don't think it's intentional -- we could debate the details of whether this kind of approach (if intentional) would actually work in Blizzard's favor, e.g. raise more hype for the game versus strain it over time.
I simply get the impression they try to play the precarious balancing game between saying things too early and too late, bearing in mind things could prop at at literally any given point in the development process that means they have to delay the game.
It's frustrating, I'm 100% agreed on that, and it gets old, but I don't buy it's pure intention nor pure incompetence; it's just how this particular thing goes, which in a way is why it can be exciting.

It's people like you that piss me off. Sorry to be so blunt but you guys are the ones that ruin it for us who have patience and understanding. Boo hoo, it's not coming out yet. It's because of people like you we get as little info that we do. "how dare unforseen circumstances happen". You can only plan for so much and if it doesn't work then you have to push release dates back which they never even officially gave us. I commend blizzard for not releasing bad games in favor of release dates. As for announcing games early. It is a reasonable and well designed marketing plan. Getting "buzz" generated about your product is always good. If you don't want to hear about then choose not too. Why get rid of it when other people do want to hear about it. And all the money in the world won't buy you a good game, talent does. And if you hire too many people then there is to much confusion. If you hate blizzard and what they do then stop complaining and stop playing their games and go play the numerous half assed games that are out there. And you are too old for what? To realize the world isn't perfect. If you are too old for anything then you need to grow up.
I for one can wait for better quality. I am upset, yes, but not mad.

Have to agree. It is hard to find a company that takes there time in this field. Besides, blizzard dose not owe me anything, It's an aggravating wait, but honestly such is life, and I can wait. I am glad blizzard still stands strong on the way they do things, because it works. And I would much rather know that they are working on the game rather then going back to reading the same speculating boring posts.
You types who argue against me are fine, you can belive what you like. Its a free country.
The problems I find, is I really dont go looking for D3 news, it just so happenes to be thrown in your face from the media and and other news sites of video games. Its really unavoidable if your around video games, you will hear tbe hype machine that is Blizzard.
In fact, in regards to this topic, I was on joysitc looking for new games released on 360 this week and viola, there is some cryptic (typical) blizzard news on the second article from the top about how another game is being delayed.
Its totally unavoidable, and from Blizzards making. Its like they enjoy release date push-backs BECAUSE IT MAKE THE FOLKS LIKE YOU FANBOYS STAND UP FOR THEIR FUTILITY, you people back them up, so they dont even have to. Dont you get it, by accepting it, you allow it. Simple as that.
If the mass video game media did a bunch of bad (good) articles about the real story of Blizzards release dates, blizzard might actually be forced to change their stance of "fuck you, it will be ready when its ready, bitches" and provide an actual release schedule that is factual and calculated like the rest of the companys out there (Square Enix, Nintendo, Capcom, Sony, EA).
The real problem here for people like me is that Im thinking in terms of regular business, and this is not that. Its kids play. The frigin kids run the institute. The media works backwards in this industry. THE MEDIA WORKS FOR THE VIDEO GAME COMPANYS, in stead of every where else in business where the media is on the consumers side.
If the media got on the consumers side of things, maybe then would company's like Blizzard actually feel pressure to meet reasonable release dates, especially considering the profits they are making in other sectors of their gaming company (wow).
Its essentially, considering the profits they make, totally unacceptable from my stand point, to allow blizzard the freedom to continue to constantly lie about their product. If the push-backs are a sole essential part of the business model, include them in the initial estimates, and if you need to push the release date forward, then you have the luxury of doing so.
Again, I dont think that many will understand this concept here, unless you know anything about business outside of video games, which of course does not seem to apply here.
If joe the plumber comes to me, comes to me, with an estimate for a job and completion time. But 6 times out of 6 he has to push the completion time back by a hell of a long time. Do you think Im going to hire him a 7th time?
Honestly, I would be a idiot to hire him back, and thats where Iam will my relationship with Blizzard. Do I keep being the waiting fool till Im 50 years old and too late, or do I learn from my mistakes and move on with my life?
It sucks, and I hate that Blizzard is forcing me to make these decisions with their product, due solely to poor release date information.
P.S.
Trust me, I dont like to bitch about this. Im not trying to troll. But I really feel slighted this time around. Again. I think the whole age thing is playing into it also these days.
Its not like they got the game ready but they dont want to release it.... If they delay a game's release date it doesnt mean anything, and it dosnt imply their stance towards the people who are waiting for it...
Get it through your head, they are working on a game that they really dont want to fuck up, and they want to make it good, and that takes time, and we are going to have to wait.

There's a huge difference between a plumbery service, and a game development. First, if you hired a plumber and the first time his estimate is far from correct, you wont hire him again at all, you wont wait 6 times, except if you're a bit retarded. And a plumbery job is a lot different to estimate... I have some troubles to understand how you think it's similar, but well, if it's necessary, here are some points...
In a plumber job, if you see a leak in a tube, you'll change it. So it costs the materials + time to change it. In a game, when you see a bug, you have to analyze it, find why it isn't working as expected, make a meeting with some people, and then try to find a solution. A solution that wont break what's already working(wan't an exemple of bug fixes that break things? the latest patch 1.24 for Warcraft3 fixed important things in the custom maps creation, but it broke the map editor, so it can't be usable on a MAC anymore).
They are announcing a project, and all what players are asking, is a release date. So eventually, Blizzard has to estimate one, even though they can't know when it'll be ready, since game development is a really abstract thing. How many times have they told us that they don't want to announce a release date, exactly for this reason? They don't want to get hopes up, and then turn down their customers because they're expecting it earlier than they can release it.
Is it frustrating? Yes.
Is it disappointing? Yes.
Is it wrong? I don't think so, think what you want.
Oh and a last thing... I prefer to hire a plumber that'll take more time than he estimated, but that the job will be well done, and finished(Blizzard know these words are important). I don't want to pay a plumber only what he estimated, and then call a second one the week after, because the first one didn't fix the leak well...
Edit: Fixed a few grammar mistakes and changed a few mistranslated words...

I fail to see the connection between a plumbers service you have paid for, and a video game you have not paid for. Blizzard dose not owe anything to you. Either they make the game or they don't, either they tell you about it or they don't. The only relation to a plumber and his work, and a video game would be a question of quality. If the plumber performs poorly you would not ask him back. likewise if a game is pushed out and has low quality, you probably would not bother buying it, or be interested in a squeal. If blizzard feels they need X amount of time to make a game to their standers, and there standers have pleased you in the past, then let them do what they want to do. And let them announce what they are doing when they want to.

And honestly what the dose this mean? do all you do when a game is announced is clear your schedule for the next however many years until it comes out and simply wait!? Go do the things you would have done if you "moved on". then simply come back and play the game when it's out. I mean come on, it's simple logic.

What decision are they forcing you to make? Is waiting for a game to release life threatening or something? Do you plan on quitting your job/family when it comes out? The only factor I can think of that is reasonable to assume is that you will buy or build a new computer for the game, But you don't have to do that while the game is still not out, and it is better to buy/build when the game is released.

Are we supposed to go around and make angry posts on there site? Yah that will teach them! Oh wait, lets not buy there game that we have been waiting for to play, this inevitably giving them the cold shoulder and then they go out of business and we don't have to wait for another one of there grate games that we like to play to come out! So your right, we should not allow them to release there intelligent property to us any latter then said given dates! .... How do we do that exactly? persuade them that they need to do things your way? and then when the game comes out and they have not put the quality you expect in it in the game sue them!
It's simple, by "allowing" them to do what they do... they make what they make.
I can see why game delays are frustrating, but stating that a video game company should be held liable, and judged, by miss announcing a completion date in the same way as a plumber would be shallow and entirely missing the point.

I can see why game delays are frustrating, but stating that a video game company should be held liable, and judged, by miss announcing a completion date in the same way as a plumber would be shallow and entirely missing the point.
