If you were going to buy a new high-end gaming computer, which brand would you prefer, and why?
The reason why I post this thread is because I am looking for a new computer. But, I do not know which computer brand is best for gaming. I also can not build my own computer because... I am just a noob when it comes to computers.
If you have the money to spend, go ahead and look around here at Alienware. If not, HP would be good for desktops and Toshiba is good for laptops. All in all, custom builds are the best if you know what you are doing or know somebody that does.

I would build it myself. It is really not hard at all, and you get to know your machine way better. Saves you a good chunk of change and you get to pick and choose the parts, what is better than that?
I build my first system, air cooled q6600 in an antec 900 overclocked to 3.5ghz, a few years ago. Then stepped up to the beast I have now... a watercooled i7 running at ~4.5ghz in a haf932... couldn't be happier I tried to build my own rather than buying a prebuilt those few years ago...
Actually with the way retail is going with selling computers, it is cheaper to buy an already built PC like an HP and then add on to it, since for like $500-600 you can get a 22'' monitor, 3-4gb ram, dual core, ect...just gotta throw a graphics card in. Now you build that and you are probably higher depending on what case you get and parts. Also they typically package a printer in too so, it is getting harder and harder to beat buying an already build PC now adays.
Let's not forget operating system as well.
Processor...100-200
Case...50-100
Mobo...50-150
Monitor...100-250
Ram...50-200
Operation System...~50-150
Thats atleast $400 there with no tax, unbuilt, and no mouse/keyboard, no graphics card either.
Id look up Newegg or even Best Buy and find a real nice HP for sale. Just don't let them talk you into anything, you just need the computer not their service. Having worked for Best Buy...90% of our geek squad...didn't have an A+ Cert and couldn't get 1 if it fell on em.
Exactly, newegg or Best Buy..make sure to buy something on sale tho. If you are buying for Diablo 3 or SC 2 you got plenty of time and the right deal will show itself, especially with tax returns coming up there will be some nice sales out there, also be some bad sales out there looking to rob you. Id go with a desktop also over a laptop due to it is easier to fix and upgrade and is faster $ for $.
i followed this while rebuilding my first computer and found it very helpful. Not only is building your own computer cheeper and more customizable, it comes without ANY spamware or special mobos/bioses that dont allow for some things or slow others down. imo, gaming computers, not dell or hp or toshiba. if u want a good comp, go to places like cyberpowerpc or powerpc or some crap like that.
price would be a good thing to know and usage (vid editing, internet, the such)

Exactly! It is quite easy to do, and you will get nearly twice the performance for half the price. High end gaming computers are VERY overpriced. I plan on building a new comp in a couple of months for Battlefield Bad Company 2 :). Come on NVidia show us what you get, at least ATI will drop prices or something if nothing else.

With this day and age of computer sales and how many deals they give you, I really don't find it possible to build a better computer for cheaper. Do me a favor and run up some specs and their prices and I will find an already built store bought computer for cheaper.
Top 1 is cheap but can easily game just throw a dif graphics card in.
Bottom 2 are a little more expensive but not over $800 and have a quad core and 8gb of ram with 750-1tb HD space...please beat those for the price.
Been thinking about this deal, and it seems good enough for me.
You guys have any thought you want to share?
$499 you get to do labor yourself, risk breaking or ESD equipment, have no monitor still, only 2gb of ram(Which is fine), no Intel core 2 duo or quad, $100 video card, and I still see no operating system...so unless you are going bootleg or have 1 already expect an extra $100 or so.
Id still recommend finding something either on sale, or buying a best buy computer since you get sooo much more for a little more cash.
I mean for what, $50 you can get a way better machine that is a complete package, and opt to upgrade the low tier graphics card later or even buy the same one you are looking at now since it is only $100 that will cover the cost of your OS.

It's really not about the brand though, its about what's in the computer.
I second this...if you could give a budget that might help in determining things a bit better.

If you buy an Alienware, your buying a Dell computer with an Alienware case.
If you want a computer, go to www.newegg.com

Gotta consider things you are paying for:
Processor
Mobo
Ram
Video Card
Power Supply
Case
Keyboard
Mouse
Speakers
HD
CD / DVD
Operating System
Monitor
--If you wanted to print, a Printer as well--
Now adays I really find it hard to believe that custom is cheaper
