Anyone here longbaord? Very occasionally, regularly, ever? It's a new hobby I'm starting to take to, it's one of the most relaxing, and thrilling things I've ever done. It's hard to explain how both of those can be meshed into one action, it's something you have to experience.
As a kid I spent years with my 2 brothers in law just cruising around, it was our form of transportation, bikes were faster sure, but skating had the advantage of being about to stop where ever you saw a nice setup, shred a little, and continuing on. This was before youtube was big, before Google was even big, this was the time of Ask Jeeves.com.. Which later turned to Ask.com. So other than T.V there wasn't any way to really see what was out there, an since I didn't watch much T.V (I'm a movie guy) I never discovered the sport of downhill longboarding.
I stopped skating when I got my first car, just kinda how things went. That was about 4 year ago. The other day my friend called me up to go longboarding, said he had a board for me, so I got my old pads from the closet and met him a few towns over at a nice winding hill. The board he tossed at me wasn't what I was used to at all.. HUGE wheels, a drop through truck setup, and a hammock board shape. Seeing as it was so long since I even touched a board I took it reeaall easy the first few runs, carving in and out of the center of the road, terrified of the speed wobbles.. After I got the feel for the board, and almost got hit by a Prius, I took a low stance, and bombed down the hill. It was awesome, one of the best feelings ever.
After that run it was pretty late, so we dubbed the next run our final one for the day. Turns out the Prius that almost hit me was pretty pissed because she apparently called the cops. As we were about 3/4 done with out last run, we see a cop backed into a patch on the side of the road, than turn his lights one.. He said he broke the speed limit of the road, he didn't seem pissed just confused lol.
I was gonna sell my guitar for money for a PC, but seeing as Diablo is still pretty far away, and I really want a DH board of my own now, I'll chance it and use the money for thar. I spent all last night researching the best DH board setup on Silverfishlongboarding.com lol. I'll be dropping $500 on a custom board and legit pads soon, and I can't wait.
So that's my story.. Figured I'd share on the off chance someone is are bored as me and also enjoys longboarding lol.
This is my new favorite video of the week~ Watch it full screen HD is you can, it's pretty inspiring to get good lol.

I have this friend that went longboarding from our capital city to where he was spending vactions (135 km). It took him several days, but when he got there a TV crew was waiting for him and he appeared on the news and everything. Then, this big longboard company, I think it's the one you mentioned, saw that, and told him they would give him a video camera and their most expensive longboard for free if he taped himself longbaording all the way to Rio de Janeiro (more than 2000 km). He's still on his way. That's a world record by the way, longest distance on a longboard.
I actually just recently started it'd pretty fun, not a lot of hills around me, but i hace fun on the ones there are, i also snowboard so i got the hang of turning quick.

That's awesome, I wish I was a fraction as good as him free gear is such a great reason to try to get sponsored lol.

I heard knowing how to snowboard helps, I honestly have never tried it I hate the cold lol. I surf though, but it's not really the same at all. Glad someone else around the site is starting to pick it to~ It's something I think everyone should at least try on a little hill just to experience it.

I bomb sets of stairs and do kickflips. Hills are too easy.

yeah i tried surfing once, was a bad day for my first time, had a huge ass board, couldn't even get out to the break, i would like to try again though at a beginner friendly place... NICE VID too!
That's awesome! I need onea those, the only thing we have to go by when we go out are if cars catch up to us, or if we catch up to cars lol.
I'm still torn between setting up my dream board, or saving for a gaming rig.. God forbid Diablo comes out this year and I don't have the money to build the rig that I want.. lol

I've so been wanting to start longboarding this summer! That video is just godlike. Really thinking of getting myself a board and starting out, I've never really skated or done any snowboarding so I'll have to learn completely from scratch and living in the middle of a city we don't have a lot of free safe longboarding space, but I'll have to find some back alley to practice on.
Anyone have any tips for what I should be looking for when I buy my first longboard? The whole market with trucks, wheels, different boardshapes etc, etc is a whole science and is kinda boggling me.. <_<
