So everyone kept talking about the upcoming Invitational as a potential event for Blizz to announce D3's release. I am, as I'm sure everyone is, excited for the unveiling in a couple days but, until then, here's something I want some second opinions on.
As usual, Blizz's tongue-in-cheek writing style is fun, but the WoW style map of Paris attracted my attention. Click on it.
Now for some stream of consciousness:
"Oh cool... there's the Eiffel Tower... cute quotes relating the tourist sites to WoW/Starcraft (Diablo is notably absent) - gotta click 'em all! Hmm... there are a lot of cemetaries and the whole feel of this map is kinda creepy. Ohh! The Louvre! I wonder if they'll have something written about the 'Da Vinci Code.' Wait, what's that next to it? I can't click on it... hmmm. WAIT. Is that... a Pentagram? The only other two non-clickable buildings are small, yes, but their architecture looks a little like the starting town in the original Diablo. It couldn't be a hint at a Diablo-related announcement... or could it?"
Judge for yourself and share your thoughts!
P.S. I realize that this could be something else - my first thought was a ferris wheel that is seasonally in that area. But if it were just a ferris wheel, wouldn't Blizz write something cute for the Invitational guests to want to go? No idea about those other buildings.
Just a thought, but thought it would be fun to share/discuss as we wait for the big reveal. Have a good week!
edit: and old Paris builds are in the style of Diablo, yes, because thats where the style of diablo comes from. but, thats such a smallll drawing, its hard to tell what style those buildings are in.
nice find though, i didn't even know the map existed.
edit again: also, pentagrams aren't in that shape. A pentagram has five sides. or if you're thinking of a hexagram, which has six sides.. well, it still doesn't fit, because the sides have to be straight, not in a circle.
*sigh*, sorry to be so blunt, I know we are just trying to find the smallest hint of hope there is. which yes, it is fun doing.

This map is a WoW map; it has the same colors, same shapes, same models (almost). It's not in reference to Diablo in any obvious way.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Paris : even without a Blizzard convention, it’s worth a visit. To help you enjoy your trip outside the Worldwide Invitational, as well as inside, we created a new World of Warcraft zone – or at least the corresponding map.
Have a look at what monumental places are awaiting you in Paris ... win lots of great memories of a Blizzard themed trip to Paris, France! You will find lots of information about Paris, its shopping areas, hotels, museums, and more, on the website of the Paris Tourism office.
In addition, we collected some practical information about how to navigate your way to the event facilities
that coming from the site you mentioned, saying exactly what PhrozenDragon said.

Why does everyone always confuse things and pentagrams?...

It's more fun watching the little children froleck and play gleefully, looking for made up immaginary refrences to Diablo 3... Then shatter there dreams and watch them crying on there knees asking there sky daddy WHY GOD WHY... So much fun...
(Not to say that I don't want D3, I do. But I'm not going to look for imaginary refrences to it...)

Holy shit! That ferris wheel could be the sign that Diablo 3 is going to be released!
And look what else I found off Blizzard's job postings!
"Blizzard, the developer of Diablo and Diablo II, is looking for a 3D Background Artist skilled at creating models and texture maps for both architectural structures and natural environments. 3D Artists assist in the design and creation of objects and characters that populate the environment, using programs such as Maya, and participate in game design with the rest of the team. The ideal candidate has outstanding skill in both modeling and texturing of background objects and environments."
Join the team of Diablo? This must mean they are working on Diablo 3 right? Damn I can't wait!

Perusing the Invitational site, I happened upon the heading "Paris" http://eu.blizzard.com/wwi08/region.xml.
