the links are the intros of each game. awesome youtuber made those let's play vids. had to watch the first game to the end since i never managed to finish myself.
any discussion about the games is welcome!
*edit* i noticed (thanks Siaynoq) that the intro i had for LoL 2 wasnt the right one so i changed it to the one i wanted in the first place.
Let me give you just one example of what I love about Lands of Lore. In the first game, you encounter a beggar who's just lying there against a tree and he's smiling at you. He asks for some change and you can give it to him. If you click on him after that he says, "Oh, it may not be safe to touch me." And this creeps you out so bad you decide to bash his skull in. Why? Because you have that option. The screen fades to black and fades back in with him lying there and blood running down his face. Amazing!
Here's an example of why I love Lands of Lore 2. Upon enter a village of cat-like people called the Huline, you can meet with their leader who is totally incompetent. After realizing how useless he is, you can kill him as he sits there defenseless in his throne. The Huline leader makes a groan as he dies and what does your character say? "These cat people make amusing noises as they die." Priceless!
I can talk about this game for hours. Yes, do watch the intros. Know that the third installment of the series suffered a number of problems as Westwood was being bought out by EA and they forced the studio to get the game out by a certain date.
Luther's reactions (the hero in the second game) were priceless in many cases. he's so ironic all the time. if you burn an enemy soldier with your spark spell early on and loot his burnt cloak he's all like "i hope its not the best Gladstone had to offer".
that's like the first thing you hear him say in the game
It was interesting how silly Luther could be during the biggest moments of the game, but he could still be deadpan serious when he wanted to. For me he's kind of one of those rare video game characters you don't see anymore. He was loaded with cynicism but he's like lovable the entire game. And sometimes when you thought he was stupid he'd have something really insightful to say.
i liked the comments in the Draracle's museum when you used the skeleton key at the paintings.
on Scotia he sounded really sad. also a bit cynical on Kieran. especially the second game i played too many times and its full of such moments.
I was kind of disappointed that Kieran was the canon hero. It so should've been Ak'shell.
Did you ever actually find that speaking stone that explained the Dark Halls? I never found it in the game but a Youtube video had all the speaking stones so that was the first time I saw it.
The story about the Dracoid Ruins are so fascinating. You had an entire people that worshipped Belial as their god. Then before Belial was killed, he created the giant worm for them worship before he returned. But the city sunk and in the subterranean caverns the remaining Dracoids mutated into the Ssar. And even though they're hunting you down there, you still feel kind of sorry for them cause they're like a deceived and tortured race.
The cinematic where the Belial statue fights the worm was stunning.
you dont mean the speaking stone that shows the emperor giving the order to sink the whole city of the Dracoids to erase history, right? not sure i've seen the one you're talking about.
and you're right, it was all dramatic and sad how the dracoids were deceived and mutated to the Ssar. and yeah, the cinematic of the fight between the statue and the worm was awesome (just like many others i have to add)!
did you see the 2 alternative ending cinematics? one was if you lost to Belial in the end and the other if you waited too long outside his lair.
Yeah I'm talking about the scene where the Emperor is on his deathbed and other Dracoid are gathered around him telling him about their plan to sink the city after he died.
The alternate endings are pretty cool, yeah. Or like, the one where Luther is evil. Luther's evil ending is much better but I don't have it in my heart to play the whole time as the evil Luther. It's especially sad when you have to fight all of the Wild Ones. Granted it saves a lot of time when you're not trying to get the silver leaf. But to have to fight Bacatta and Dawn at every encounter just made me feel sad.
Then there was the ending for the evil Luther if you lost to Belial. The Draracle actually kills you then if I'm not mistaken.
didnt know there was such an ending, oh damn now i want to play some more!
and you cant find the game anymore so i could get the english version, i really want to find one... only on ebay perhaps
always had the "good Luther gets interrupted by the Draracle when doing Dawn" ending!
Right. And while Dawn is really hot, it really is kind of a disappointing ending.
I don't think LoL 3 had multiple endings though. Only if you won or lost but no good or evil alternate endings. Copper was too big a sissy to go the evil route anyway. Actually, Copper was one of the worst things about that game. How do you go from making badasses like Ak'shell and Luther to someone like Copper. At least his cool familiars kind of helped make him tolerable though.
The problem I had most with his is how they'd make him taunt enemies every single time he engaged in battle. Like, wandering through the forests killing boars and they would attack you constantly and you'd always have to be talking shit to them.
I really want to do my own Let's Play of the first Lands of Lore. It's something I've always wanted to do but I first gotta see if I can even get the game working for me again. I got a couple of older computers in my basement, I bet I could fire it up.
Only instead of Kiko's videos I would totally play as Ak'Shell. I was sad that Kieran was the canon hero. It didn't feel right to me.
yeah Copper (and his familiars except for Lig that wasnt really talking) could get annoying after a while. i also found it funny how Richard took him to teach the family tradition of hunting boar... as if we didnt kill like 500 of them (or more) during the game
wouldnt mind watching a dracoid spreading chaos to the Dark Army, so i'm pretty sure i'd watch that vid
Cause like, you seriously kill hundreds of them. I think Syrus was one of my favorite familiars. Griselda was kind of cool but she nagged you too much. But it's funny how even Copper notices this and at one point lectures her on how she should support him more.
Goldie was annoying at first when you got her, but she actually wasn't so bad later on in the game.
Goldie had like the best abilities but wouldnt shut her mouth! (they made her extra annoying in the german version)
the third game was interesting but i prefer the second. how Luther went all the way from a wimp to the godlike hero was great. and some of the puzzles were interesting. can't say i liked the traps much tho (i remember some in the Huline-Jungle that kept spitting fireballs).
It's funny how easily you can actually miss the Draracle Halls. If you don't click that curtain you won't even know it's there. Then you can just end up going straight to the Huline Jungle without getting the Prism sword, those fireball crystals and Cocoa's Cap (what the hell was the point of that thing)?
But yeah, the second one beats the third one by far. Not that it's really the third game's fault. But the second one was just so great in that it was really mysterious and challenging. You're totally alone the entire game. There's also something about the use of live actors that made it feel more creepy. While there are plenty of friendly characters played by live actors, there are creepy ones too. Rix actually really gave me the creeps. Even though he's just all acting suave, I really wondered how he got himself trapped in the Dark Halls. And there he is going apeshit on you with that weird staff of his. Then Kelsrick and the King were kind of creepy and especially the Julien the Priest. Was it just me, or was he totally hiding something? I even wondered if he knew everything about the Dark Halls, like he was a part of it.
And what's great about that bonus level is you never really know what it was all about. You never get an explanation. You just have to use your imagination. I suspected that Brother Julien maybe brought human sacrifices for that giant blue orb. And with those sacrifices it created those Shades that fought you. But every time I played through that game I dreaded that level so bad. And yet it was totally optional but I felt it was just something I had to see through. And I like that about games. When like there is a thing that you don't have to do, you're not sure what the incentive is to do it as far as rewards go, but you feel you gotta do it just for the sake of rooting out evil. I just hated moving on to the Wild Jungle before taking out those ghost things.
the Dark Halls were extremely creepy. they were so creepy with the ghosts coming at you all the time that in many cases i rushed out and forgot to blow the door next to the exit open (forgetting a very nice shield that way).
i dont think i ever missed the Draracle Halls, though. always went for the broken greatsword and the prisma sword or how it was called. the skeleton key was also a must have thing from there.
did you choose to kill the huline chief? i usually did but prefered it in a more "subtle" way (use lightning by the dam outside of the village and he exploded :P)
i wanted both the greatsword fixed and the greatsword firestorm i'm a greedy sh*t
I usually just killed the Chief right there. But I've destroyed that dam as well. Doing that kills him also? I had no idea. But yeah it's totally worth killing him. It doesn't cause you to go down the evil path and he's got like five Ancients' stones on him.
It took me a long time to figure out how to mend the broken sword as well as get Firestorm. Once I get them both upgraded though with the Dreamstone I only really used Darkstorm.
I remember seeing the worm in the Draracle Halls. I'm seriously like, "What the fuck is that thing?"
i prefered the upgraded greatsword instead of darkstorm. about same damage without life leeching (hated to run after bubbles) but way better renegeration rate (and the proc on the lightning storm was awesome).
not destroying the dam, using lightning at the wall just outside of the Huline village. it blows up the Chief's hut and you can still pick up the ancient stones
the bodyguard is pissed at you thinking its your fault but he doesnt have any evidence and you can still move in and out of the village
The bubbles never got too far away from me, I don't think...But I kept Thohan's and Darkstorm anyway. Supposedly you are supposed to use Belial's Horn to fight Belial himself, but I always killed him just fine without using it.
Yeah I had no idea you could kill the Chief that way. There was in the credits of the game a clip of Kelsrick all wounded, he's all bleeding in the face. I never saw that scene in the game though. Is that what you see when you kill the Chief that way.
Then there was the Reaver of the Great Orc. That weapon killed Ruloi in one hit. Which was great cause you'd have the Coward's Target shield and one hit and you're invisible soon after. It's kind of a shame though that once you really start getting good weapons, you replace them soon after and then you have tons of seemingly good weapons you don't need. Like, how I wish I could've had that three arrow electric weapon in the Dracoid Ruins!

i didnt mind the only one ending tho. if i wanted games with really open endings i'd go Bioware or Black Isle (Planescape Torment was awesome!)
