Has anyone played this amazing, fairly unique game?
I finished beating it the other night and I had such an amazing time with it. Granted it is a short game. An arcade game, really, made by an independent gaming company. But for how short the game is, it's quite an experience. The graphics, the ambiance, the minimal music, the atmosphere, the gameplay, it's all combined to make this really interesting puzzle/adventure game.
It gives me hope seeing small gaming companies producing games of such high caliber like this one. I think at the very least, we'll continue seeing a new genre of really high quality arcade games like this one and I'm curious to see what Playdead Games does next.
Unfortunately this game is only on Xbox Live right now, but I suspect with how popular it is they may eventually release it on other platforms.
Yeah siaynoq I was getting excited until I found out it wasn't on pc or psn. But if it does come out for those platforms I'll definitely get it. It has a nice atmosphere (not that I'm a gothic emo freak) and almost peaceful look to it. I hate games with blaring, annoying music.
It's how you learned most the time. And the game reloaded super fast and there was a great checkpoint system. Can't imagine this game being cute or pink enough for you.
I played this game (you can stop right here, Jake).
I think it's one of the best games you can buy for the money. The whole atmosphere of the game is astounding, eerie without being cheesy, and I think that was the most impressive part about it. The gameplay was great and, even though I don't like trial and error games that much, I actually liked the challenge of trying to figure out what you had to do in some parts. It's all very logical, but the added element of sudden death or uncertainty as you are presented with a new puzzle gives it that much needed twist that keeps you interested.
The only thing I didn't like was the ending.
[spoil]I know the game was supposed to be finding your sister, but when you finally got to the end and you met that other person, I couldn't tell if that was your sister or not. And then it just ends. There's no interaction with the person other than them suddenly straightening their back.
Edit: Watched a good video, it's her. She's got boobs and hair, we're good.[/spoil]
It's a very good game, one of the better ones I played in 2010. I expect more from PlayDead, but I think this is going to be pretty tough to top.

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
I've read other complaints about the ending. I'm not quite sure what people expected. I think the ending is pretty consistent with the rest of the game. It's mysterious and minimal. And this game is more about the journey than the ending. You're not even sure if everything is gonna be okay for the characters at the end. It requires a bit more of an imagination on the player's part to wonder what becomes of them. And yes, I'm well aware of the difference between plot holes and having to use your own imagination. But we can safely say here this game is a good example of the latter. To me the game was more of a painting that you could play through. And some moments were just so artistic and beautiful-like when you use that insect to carry you up onto the higher level. It wasn't as simple as grabbing onto it and flying upwards, but you end up hurting the insect who was seemingly an innocent creature, implying that even your character's innocence as a child can be quite harmful to things in this Limbo place.
There are other themes in this game too that are only represented by the visuals. I believe it was intentional of the game developer to visually convey these things and whether you're noticing it or not, it's still managing to add so much depth to the game. The game's silence just says so much. And sometimes when the game would get very loud, you wanted so bad to return to a place in the game where it was quiet, another point I think the developer was trying to make.
I loved the music score for the game, mostly because none of it left the realm of ambiance and, surprisingly, there were times where the music felt optimistic, which I thought was pretty cool in contrast to this bleak, perilous, colorless world that you ventured through. The music at 5:48 is probably my favorite because it's completely not what you would expect in that situation, but it sounds aquatic (to me, at least), which is pretty amazing.
I mean, you can tell that this game was extremely well thought out in all aspects and I think that's what makes it so good. I don't think there was much that wasn't touched upon. I think that the length of the game itself was actually appropriate considering the fact that if it were too long, you would feel yourself anticipating the ending just so the game was over. If it was too short, it would leave a lot more to be desired. I think they found a niche and worked with it brilliantly.

Pfft! Fuck that. Hipsters don't make video games. They wear beanies in the summer time and drink Pabst Blue Ribbon. No, Limbo I'd say is part conceptual, part conventional side scrolling adventure. There's nothing too unfamiliar about it as far as gameplay is concerned, but you don't have to love art so much just to enjoy it. I mean, I hate the art community more than most people do, yet I still didn't find anything pretentious about this game's presentation and aesthetic. To me it just looked like a scary dream that someone had and was willing to follow through with it and make a game with it. Whatever the artist's inspiration was, I don't really care. Overall it was a joy to play.

But anyway, I think it's likely to come out on PC just cause it got a much better reception than expected.
Here's one of my favorite moments in the game.
