Ok, first of all: I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, I looked around and didn't find it.
I know there are some plot holes in Diablo2, but this really confuses me.
How come Cain and Marius are so old?
Cain:
In Diablo 1 he was a young man, he had red hair and his robe was as blue as the sky, in Diablo 2 he is bald, his remaining hair is white and his robes are grayish.
Marius:
Up till Act 3 he was relatively young. In the epilogue (and in part of the intro) you can see him much older than Cain.
Now... what happened?
Both of them were young when the Great hero defeated diablo, that's a fact. Both of them were young when the Hero turned into the dark wanderer and both of them were young when the dark wanderer left Tristam.
When I started D2, after saving Cain, I took for granted that many years have passed since diablo was defeated and the start of my adventures in D2 and I feel this can be reassured by the age of Marius and how he tells his story... but then you start LoD...
Time twists and Baal didn't killed Marius many years after Diablo's defeat, he killed him just a few days/weeks/months after. Can't be several years after because that implies everyone in Sanctuary should be around (based just on Marius' appearance) 40 years older, and also according to Diablo Timeline in D3 site:
1263: Events of D1
1264: Events of D2 (You find Cain and he's already old. Marius is already old too)
1265: Events of LoD
How can they be so old if the time between D1 and LoD is only 2 years?
Only think I could came with is that Baal's Soul Stone drained Marius, but what about Cain?
Arrrgh /confused! Plot Hole or mysterious magic?
Can was bald in Diablo I and old. He didn't have a red cap, it was the color of his skin, which changed between games. This was most logically an artistic slant.
Since you mentioned a red cap, I decided to look for an image of him from Diablo 1 and well, I found the one above haha. Thanx a lot for the input, now I see there are no plot holes since I suspected the same as you about marius (Soulstone drained him somehow)
Um first off Cain was def not young in Diablo 1 and the red thing you see is his skin, you can clearly see his white beard and outline of his baldness.
Secondly, Marius was old looking to begin with when he met the Dark Wanderer in the tavern, then add that with travel and holding Baals soul stone would probably give you some wrinkles and be pretty messed up.
