this thread is for the discussion of the Baldur's Gate series. referred to by some as the best RPG series of all time.
bearing in mind it is based on Dungeons and Dragons i still find it an enjoyable series of games (esp. BGII and its expansion), it has just about everything i look for in a game, customization of characters, great epic story, great NPCs (who actually adventure with you and are fully voiced), a huge immense world, lots of spells and items to use, lots of monsters from mythology and lore, (plus some new ones), cool quests, pit fights, taverns and pubs, the abiltiy to add new content such as mods. and for those of you with 56k connection virtually lag free multiplayer! assuming someone with a faster connection hosts the game, ahh TCP/IP connection, what would i do with out you. but enough about that, lets get back to the game.
Baldur's Gate esp. BGII is one of the games that has impacted hugely on the kind of games i like and play. i tend to go for the huge medieval fantasy epics, like BGII and LOD of course. This is probably sue in part to the fact that i used to play table top games like Dungeons and Dragons, and Warhammer, so when these games made the shift to the PC i just on that bandwagon without question, and havent regretted it. Athough when Diablo I was released in '96 that helped too. the first BG game was released in '98.
I like all the attention to detail that went into the BG series, the huge amount of quests that are actually releated to the story, and the many, many side quests, the NPCs and other characters are amazing, some are absolute evil bastards, while others are the epitomy of the uncompromised epic hero, others are the naive high society princess type, others the tree hugging nature lover. and one of my favourite characters from the series, the always ready to vanquish evil, the battle hardened and troubled ranger Minsc, and Boo, oh i almost forgot Boo, is minature giant space hamster who serves as his mentor.
The characters in the games are voiced by some of voice actings best, Frank Welker, David Warner, Dee Bradley Baker, Kevin Michael Richardson, Jim Cummings, Billy West, Grey De Lisle. granted some if not may of you wont know who these people are unless you play the game or watch a lot of cartoons, but the characters are still voiced pretty well, they show many emotions and in some cases offer some comic relief, but that is also due in part to the writers, who did a great job too.
while the games are getting old now they are still fun to play, and the graphics are still pretty good. while the characters do have a bit of super imposed look, but the backgrounds are amazing, deep rich forests, large cities of stone and brick, dank sewers, lush green groves, eerie graveyards and abandoned temples, as well as the odd place or two thats just some random looking place of magic.
there is a series of BG games for console, but generally this thread is about the PC versions, the original franchise. but you may discuss the console versions as well.
well thats my thoughts on the games what are yours?
and if you dislike the games (and im sure there are some people out there who do) dont go bad mouthing the games like people do with WOW, if you must please state state what it is you dislike about them please dont just say "these games suck hugs amounts of toilet water, a waste of my time and money" if you do i'll just have to delete it, so really your just making more work for me. so please dont.
a few of us are actually trying (and seemingly failing) to put together a multiplayer game of BGII. if you wish to join us there are several things you will need to you find links for these here 2nd post down

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
I only played Baldur's Gate, the first. I did enjoy it, even though I never actually got that far into it. It was just one of those games where I'd get sidetracked with all the neat sidequests and before I was ever able to get very far on it I'd have to give it back to the friend I borrowed it from. I never played the second one though.
The cosole versions were great fun, but also the shortest games I ever played. I seriously beat each one in a single day, kind of dissapointing. Still, they were really fun to play.
ive played dark alliance 4 the ps2, I liked it alot...though i hear it is by far the worst game of the bunch. I would like to enojoy that bg2 game with u elfen but im kinda investing my free time into diablo 2 lod atm lol (u know that cuz we play together lol)
always nice to find someone else who enjoys this series

yeh, the side quests are fun and numerous, if you liked the first one i would recommend trying to get a hold of the second one. in the thread i linked above there is a copy of a torrent for the second one. not many stores sell the games, but depending on where you live you can find it as part of a pak.
-BGII + BGII EX
-BG + BG EX + BGII + BG II EX (sometimes called the BG ultimate collection)
-or the famed super pak all the BG games, all the IWD games and all the NWN games (minus NWN II)
the second one plays very similar to the first one, there is no need to get use to a whole new set of DND rules like you have to with IWD and IWD II, mostly it just expands on the first one adding new content. new races, classes, items which you would expect, but continues the story of your character from the first one, unless you play as a Half-Orc in BGII (which i often do), as Half-Orcs werent available as playable characters in BGI.
there are also alot more intense battle against dragons and liches in the second one. the seond one is well over twice as long as the first one, and thats without the expansion.
if you do get a hold of the second one and its expansion and you have any questions about the game like where is x person you need to find to do x task, i should be on MSN/AIM to help you. if im on the forums im on IM as well.
if you do get a hold of the second one as wish to join in on the Multiplayer game i should be around to walk you thru modding and all that. its not overly complicated, now that i remember how to do it. i really want to get a game going but im short on players that have time to play, everyone is busy with work (and LOD, lol)
ive played dark alliance 4 the ps2, I liked it alot...though i hear it is by far the worst game of the bunch.
the console games are alright, but like Lord Mantis stated they are very short, and also they lack the extent to which the PC versions allowed you to customise the look of your character or characters.
ive only played the first 2 console games, i like the PC games much better.
I would like to enojoy that bg2 game with u elfen but im kinda investing my free time into diablo 2 lod atm lol (u know that cuz we play together lol)
yeh me too on both accounts, work and the majority of free time playing LOD, but i still play BGII and im looking forward to playing the MP game if i can.

it sounds like you never got out of the first dungeon. the first dungeon is the most boring part of the game. the games get much better when you get to the cities, castles and dragons, and when you really get into the side quests.

I'd join you in your adventure too, it actually sounds like tons of fun, but I'm really too busy most of the time. I will let you know if anything changes though.

yeh you do that, its just a social thing just when ever we have some spare time we can all jump on and bash some zombies and slay some dragons.
we are all pretty busy with work and in some cases playing LOD (*raises hand*). plus there is all the mods you need. not that they arent hard to find (esp. not now that i provided links for each one) its just a little hard to install them for new comers, but im on MSN/AIM so i can walk you thru it.

fantastic....a BG & BG II thread. you know...outside of Diablo and all of its incarnations....the BG series is the second longest in playing time for me.....i spent a good year and a half just on BG II. it was a very in depth game for its time....at least for me....the replayability was just about endless.
yeah i think everyone disliked Irenicus' dungeon...which is why i modded it to exclude it on my subsequent times thru.
well it certainly ranks up in the top 5 of all the rpgs ive ever played.

Im too lazy to think of something of significant meaning to put here.
yep, so many variations for character. and all the quests, the sotry, the romance, the NPCs its all good, if only Chateau Irenicus could have been more fun.
oh well at least Jasper St Baird loves you

gotta love all the voice work that was done for this series, esp. in BGII.
i really like the voices for Minsc, Edwin, Irenicus and Korgan. the writing is a big part of it but its they way the say their lines, man i just love hearing them talk or shout mighty battle cries.

Which actually starts to feel easy-peasy in the expansion. Bu then your group is often so powerful that a lich isn't a problem anymore. Though of course I've only ever played on normal

Am I the only one here who actually likes Irenicus dungeon? It's not the best part of the game, but it isn't the worst either. Except for Imoen's whining all the time. That is irritating.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
There was too much talking and the quests were mundane if not pointless. I mean, the opening movie kicked ass and then outta no where all you hear for the next 20 minutes is Imoen bitching! But idk it doesn't seem that much different from what you continue to do in other places, however I'm just as relieved as Imoen's bitch ass when you finally surface...
i like certain parts of Chateau Irenicus, the design and Minsc's reaction to the button test, "This is silly! Buttons are not how one escapes dungeons! I would smash the button and rain beatings liberally down on the wizard for playing such a trick"
and god do i hate imoen's constant whining.
but fighting a vampire and a Cambion is pretty cool

he doesnt answer the question he just comments on it. you might have just skipped passed it.
most npcs will have something to say about most of the quests present in the game.
Minsc in reaction to learning of the whereabouts of the child murderer from the first game
"I trust those who prey on children no farther than they can be thrown, even if I manage to throw them pretty far! And throw him I shall!"

if your being sarcastic Zubin please dont. if your retracting your previous statement and now enjoy the series thats cool.
