I need some good technical help for a moment. Is FRAPS really that great for recording stuff on my computer? I'm trying to record a game I'm playing on Dosbox and I got the dosbox cpu speed adjusted good now so the game is running about how it should be. But when I go into to use FRAPS to record what's happening in dosbox, the game gets really laggy. I wonder if I'm just going about this whole project the wrong way. Should I try using me webcam or something to do it instead?
Is there another program now superior to FRAPS? I tried it just because it was the only one I ever knew about but I haven't used it for years. If anyone can tell me of a better program or overall method of recording a game I play on dosbox please let me know.
I tried using Xfire briefly, though that will require you to open the Dosbox game through Xfire, and I'm not entirely sure if that's possible.
I had some good results with it when I recorded some games a while back though, it delivers.

Hmm, I seriously doubt I can run this game that way though. It's pretty old and most definitely needs Dosbox to work as well as it does. Let's just assume I have to use that program.
Simple fact: recording from your computer with a program will require a lot of juice, and you have to have enough for both that & the game. There's also programs that might not like not having every bits of CPU power they can get their hands on.
However I am surprised this causes problems in DOSBox. Generally I'd say, lower the resolution or something like that... but unless your PC is really that bad, the problem might just be DOSBox itself with FRAPs, in which case something like HyperCam might do the job better "just because".
Personally though, FRAPs is the ultimate recording tool. If you want better, you get a capture card.
Yeah I figured it would require lots of RAM to run smoothly. The game itself in Dosbox is from like 1992 and uses 256 colors. Though I do think yesterday I was running a lot of programs at the time of playing the game. So perhaps I'll try it again without so much going on at a time.
I hate that number in the upper corner of FRAPS though that is cycling constantly.
I'm also thinking I should make this CD into an .img file and play of a virtual mounted cdrom with like daemon tools.
not sure it would make a big difference. daemon tools doesnt take much ram anyway. wondering if the hard drive you have the image on is the same with the one FRAPS is saving the videos you're recording. it might cause some lags.
Well, I've used screenvirtuoso for when I had to record something that didn't utilize directX (thus fraps doesn't work). I don't know if it'll help, but perhaps it could work.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Never heard of it? I don't think the main purpose of a capture card is to capture the video from your own computer though: I heard it mostly as the best mean to record from your TV and such. I don't know much more.

That number is your FPS in that game. A lot of people actually tell people you can just run FRAPs and it'll tell you your FPS, which can be handy. In the FRAPs menu there should be a box called Overlay Corner, you can change the corner its displayed or disable it entirely.
Another thing that I thought of just now: FRAPs will -force- the FPS of the game to be whatever setting you set it to be. You would think that trying to record at 30 FPS will have better performance: but with certain programs that, say, run at 60 FPS, it'll slow it down to a crawl, but if you try it at 60 FPS in the options, it'll actually record smoothly.
In other words, try different FPS settings in FRAPs for recording. They might be the problem. Also try recording Half-Size instead of Full-Size maybe.
