ok so i belive tristram is the capital of westmarch or kunduras. so a capital city would be pretty large to be a capital. so why is it in diablo 1 that it is fairly small? some conlusions i have thought of was disk space- the size of a disk couldnt have a bigger city. another thing i thought of is the city after 4 years of being terrorized by demons and whatnot could have been down sized by these attacks.
Tristram in Diablo 1 is whats left from the former capital city. After the defeat from Westmarch and the death of Leoric to the raise of Diablo, it got smaller and smaller and people that hadnt died, left.
thanks i guess this was a stupid thread to make. but in the next diablo if its from the past or after the worldstone destruction. i would like to see tristram being rebuilt. or at least bigger.
I thought Duncraig was capital of Westmarch? I don't think Tristram is a major city - it's probably one of many little dinky towns throughout the Khanduras, though.
Capitals on the diablo map are marked by an * towns and non capital cities are marked by a .
Tristram is one of the villages/towns/hamlets/whatever you will, that surrounded King Leoric's Castle city.
I could be wrong though, but Tristram is far too small to be counted as a city, let only a capital one.

Let's think about New York state for a second, what is the capital of The Empire State? Albany. Is this city the largest in the state? no it isn't. Is it the most densely populated? no it is not.
Now let's think about Tristram with that in mind. Tristram is not the largest town or village in Khanduras, nor is it the most populated. But does that mean it cannot be the capital of Khanduras? No. It has just as much chance as any other place.
The problem is, Tristram is the ONLY village or town large enough to even be considered that is shown in Khanduras (Entsteig is even worse! Not a single village is present there on the map). We know King Leoric lived in a castle, and based on the layput of Tristram in DIablo 1 (as well as D2) we can conclude that the castle is not within the immediate township of Tristram. But due to King Leoric's Tomb being within said township, I would suspect the castle to be close, that is unless King Leoric was a resident of Tristram. Even a king might like to be buried in the lands (town) of his birth and his people. I know I would.
Yes I kinda of contradicted my earlier statement a bit, but not entirely. I just felt my above point should be made.

King Leoric was a Zakarum Lord and came to a Kingless Khanduras and declared himself King, and chose the city of Tristram to settle into. Soon after arriving, Diablo started awakening and tainted the King and the Arch Bishop.
It doesn't say 'capital city', just 'city'. And considering they didn't have a King before Leoric, they wouldn't have even chosen a capital. Who knows how they stayed peaceful. But yea, since the King's arrival, I would say that Tristram automatically became the capital.
Either way, it should be bigger than what is shown in-game, because its said to be a city, not a really small village. And what kind of village can afford to build a cathedral? And yeah, after four years of terrorising, the city would have gotten a lot smaller anyway.
Also, note that Lut Gholein is fairly small for something that is meant to be a massive city. It is described as much much bigger in the books - as it should be. Its just because its in-game that it seems small.

what is uber tristram? you obviously cant use the carin stones to get there so there must be 2 tristrams. Is the second tristram in the mortal realm at all?

Uber Tristram was added to the game as a new quest, and that is where you find the Uber Prime Evils. Think of Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto in the Hell act. Now inject them with steriods, and now they are Uber.
To get to Uber Tristram you must hunt down The Countess, The Summoner, and Nihlathak in Hell, and you do so untill you have 3 sets these:
Key of Terror (Countess)
Key of Hate (Summoner)
Key of Destruction (Nihlathak)
Every set can be put into the Horadric Cube and makes a red portal in Act 5 of Hell. They are always random as well, so you'll want to make all three portals in the same game.
The three portals take you to Uber Duriel, Uber Izual, and Lilith. Lilith is the mother of Andariel. Anyways you have to fight a long way before you can actually get to these, but long story short you kill them and they drop an organ:
You take these three organs, and combine them, and it will open up a portal to Uber Tristram. There you will find the Uber Prime Evils, and once you kill all three of them, a unique large charm will fall from the last one you kill, and that is how you get the Hellfire Torch. Remember that all the portals can only be made in Act 5 in Hell difficulty. The foes are really hard, so you also want to have a someone as backup that can do this in case you can't, or else you lose all the work and sacrifice of finding the keys and organs.
Tristram in Diablo 1 is fine how it is. It brings the darkness, scariness to the game. The only thing i have against tristram how spread apart everything is. Wirt is away from the town, and the witch you have to cross over a river to get to. Other wise, tristram is fine in my book.

As for the cathedral. Could the religious faction who's faith the Cathedral belongs to have built the cathedral? The Catholic Church threw up lots of churches and cathedrals around the world as it sought to convert the heathens. Can a similiar thing not be applied to the cathedral in Tristram?

Completely went over your head, didn't it Carlos...
He meant out of game, not within the game mechanics.
Actually, I think its referred to as both a city and a town.
Book Two: The Return of Terror
It was then that the great northern lord Leoric came unto the lands of Khanduras and, in the name of Zakarum, delcared himself King. Leoric was a deeply religious man and had brought many Knights and Priests with him that comprised his Order of the Light. Leoric and his trusted advisor, the Arch Bishop Lazarus, made their way to the city of Tristram.
Beastiary: Mephisto
If our greatest fears do prove to be true, the skeletal warriors that are rumored to haunt the town of Tristram might well be the corrupted remains of the valiant Horadrim monks laid to rest in the catacombs beneath the church.
They returned to find the town of Tristram in shambles.
And as for the size of Tristram:
Travelers on the roads surrounding Tristam were accosted by cloaked riders that seemed to now constantly roam the deserted countryside. Many villagers fled Tristram making their way to other towns and kingdoms, fearing some unnamed evil that seemed to wait in the shadows all around them. Those few who chose to remain seldom ventured out at night, and never tread foot upon the grounds of the cursed Monastery. Whispered rumors of poor, innocent people being abducted in the night by wicked, nightmarish creatures filled the halls of the local inn. With no King, no law, and no army left to defend them, many of the townsfolk began to fear an attack from the things that now dwelt beneath their town.
It really sounds like there would be more buildings than what we see.
well i am guessing it was a city when king leoric was starting to be king. and then after all the evil and the downsizing of tristram. maybe they considered it a town. so it origionally was a city. but in D3 i would like to see tristram either its size when it should have been a city or getting rebuilt. depending on if they have the game story start before diablo 1 or after diablo 2.
what do you guys think?
