This is so upsetting. I just finished the Black Mushroom quest and got the Spectal Elixir. Unfortunately, I saved and quit my game before coming back on today. I didn't realize that doing this would render it impossible to drink the elixir. Is there any way I can drink it?
Aaaaw... man does that ever suck.
And yeah, I'd have to side with syberdragon, it's not hacking, it's "fixing" a bug :D.
It will probably be the easiest way to fix it, aside from starting a new game.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think I had to go do something though so that's why I left in such a haste.
While we're on the subject of this quest does anyone else think that this quest's dialogue was a bit of a faux pas on Blizzard North's part? I mean for me, it nearly destroyed Adria's dark mystique due to her descent into cartoonish witchydom through her dialogue.
She just seemed so over the top with her need to create a "special brew" and her erratically-pitched voice. Up until this quest she seemed mostly pretty calm and wise (with maybe the occasional burst of witchyness) but here she's just a walking, stereotypical caricature.
Judging by the main character's comments ("Now that... is a BIG mushroom"} and the townspeople's dialogues (Griswold, Ogden), this quest wasn't really meant to be taken seriously but for me it was maybe a bit too funny. I like some comic relief, but I didn't feel that Adria's character shift and Griswold's hyberboles made for a very credible quest. Just goes to show though that even Diablo had its flaws.
Yea thats what i thought too that it was more for comic relief which is useful in such a dark game. But the elixir is pretty useful once you get it. I think it gives like +2 to all stats or something.

I think it's fine to stay serious on serious quests, but when you're sent to find a big mushroom, it can be as funny as it wants. It breaks up the game a little and is a nice change from the usual tension and fear that usually comes with diablo.
I miss the fear that i used to get from that game. It was like that kind of omg im gonna die when i turn around the corner fear.

I totally understand where everyone is coming from when they say they appreciated some humour as a change from the usual dark and disturbing atmosphere of the game. But does no one feel that the humour in this quest kind of destroyed the credibility of Blizzard's characterization of Adria and thus wasn't very well done artistically speaking?
Well you're thinking about it too much its just a fun quest that they added in with a pretty good reward.

Well, maybe I am. The forums have been pretty slow lately and there hasn't been much interesting discussion though so maybe I'm just trying to get people talking a bit. I love me some debate.
Lol i know what you mean. We need some life in these forums.

Here's what Jarulf's Guide says about the quest: "After Adria tells you that you can keep it you should drink (use) it immediately. Don't save the game before drinking it. It will give you +3 to all attributes. If you don't use it right away you will not be able to use it at all. However, I have been told that if you get hold of a second spectral elixir, you can use both at once."
I'm pretty sure that if you decide to play a new game, and in that new game you get the black mushroom quest again, you'll be able to use both elixirs at once and you'll receive full benefits from both.
But does no one feel that the humour in this quest kind of destroyed the credibility of Blizzard's characterization of Adria and thus wasn't very well done artistically speaking?
Not in the least. I've never gotten the feeling that anything about this quest was incongruous with the rest of the game.

Thanks Ell_man but I don't really understand how this works. If I start a new game, won't the first elixir have gone with the old game?
Not if you keep it in your inventory. Everything you have equipped, and hold in your inventory should move with your character to the new game.
I suppose there might be an off-chance that it might get deleted as a duped item in the new game, but, personally, I've only had that happen occasionally with legit piles of 5000gp that I've dropped. I've never had anything deleted from my inventory.
But I've also never been in your particular situation, either, so I don't know first-hand how the game will handle a second elixir. Although, I've never been steered wrong by anything in Jarulf's guide.

You can choose the option to start a new game with a character and you'll keep everything in your inventory but in the new game everything on the ground will be lost and all the dungeon levels will be reset and randomized. The entrances to the catacombs, caves, hell will also be reset until you clear down to them.
So if you decide you want to start a new game, say to play NM in single player using this trick, you can keep the elixir in your inventory when you start a new game. Hopefully, you'll get the quest again in your NM game and once you finish the quest, consume both elixirs for a total of +6 all stats.

I guess it's impossible then. What a silly bug though. You think Blizzard would have patched it up by now. Ah well, no free stats for me.
