Doesn't really make much sense if you don't post the question Blizzard answered ;).
Official Blizzard Quote:
Grug16 - @Diablo Is 10 characters per account still final? Or rather, more final than anything else Blizzard is doing right now?
Diablo - @Grug16 Less final than the witch doctor is a class, and more final than what happens to hardcore characters when they die in the arena.
In other words, they aren't sure if the character limit will be 10. Since it's less final that the WD class, but more final than the HC Arena death punishment.
This also says that they're still working on the HC Arena death punishment.
“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” - Albert Einstein
I read both but I guess I just took it in the wrong context. I took it as death not being final.
In a sense you were right, if you consider "Death" being the end of the HC character permanently. In the match the character obviously has to in some sense "die" in order to drop out of the fight for a certain amount of time. What they're working on is how to balance the HC feeling of always being at risk of loosing your character, and letting the HC community PvP without loosing their char after one death.

I don't normally play HC but I would think a 2 out of 3 match would be fair (or even 3 out of 5). Loser dies. Otherwise how do you call it HC?
I could see them implementing a very harsh penalty for dying in HC arena maybe something like losing xp or even levels.
I just can't imagine hc pvp without the actual death consequence. Seems like a very bad design change to monkey with that as it's literally the defining characteristic of the mode. Ultimately, as an HC player, i'm all for implementing some pvp, but I don't want to see an entire death-less leage of extrordinary arena players evolve out of this.

The problem is that 99% of HC players won't want to do PvP then.
So Blizz is figuring (probably, as nothing is confirmed or even really more than hinted) that HC characters could do Arena PvP without risking dying, but would have a separate option for those truly badass motherfuckers who wanted to duel with perma-death.
Because Jay Wilson <3's them
I dug up the quote just for you guys.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Q: Hardcore, you had mentioned that you changed it to a death match where you respawn and do total kills. Is this still when you die that first time you are dead forever?
A: That’s what I want to do. There is a lot of pushback on the team. I announced that at Blizzcon and the community were all for it. We have gotten a bit of mixed results outside of Blizzcon. It’s easy for me to get a crowd worked up so… The PvP strike team that focuses on that area, they are pretty nervous about it. Their basic feeling is that if that is what happens, then hardcore characters just won’t PvP. But then there was hardcore dueling in D2 so we may change that. We may allow hardcore PvP players to play without dying. That being said, I still want a way for hardcore players to duel even if not at ship. I am going to push for a way. Even if its basically just a place where you can go in the world where you are flagged for PvP. Even if it is that simple, there is a community, even if it’s a small community that I want to support. Those fuckers are crazy. Part of me it like aww you crazy bastards.

At the risk of sounding like a prick: I think that means they shouldn't be playing HC.
I can see where there could be an audience of players that like risky pve, but don't want the same risk in pvp. I totally get that, but we had (non-gank) HC pvp before and I don't think there's any reason to suppose it would die without a no-death implementation.

I disagree, I myself would love to play a hardcore character PvE, but I would be disappoint if I couldn't do Arena. I mean, normal characters aren't experiencing durability loss like they would in PvE, why should HC characters permadie? Clearly arena PvP is not meant to count as actual in-game dying.
Plus, if they still have the option for hardcore permadeath dueling, everyone wins!

Fair point, but I still think the entire concept of arena pvp for HC mode in that sense breaks the hardcore mantra off at the hilt. HC is about risking it all every time you leave town, imo.
Personally I hope they keep death permanent. I loved the thrill of it and will continue PvP well into d3. Lack of real death takes away what PvP is for me. That mentioned, if people don't have a choice, more people will actually give it a try and find that it can be really really fun. HC PvP separates the good from the bad.
I would duel with perma-death settings once I'm confident enough and once I want a challenge in my game.
As long as they give people a "sparring" mode where they can just train in the arena and their HP will drop to 1 (or 0.5 whatever) and they'll faint and then recover for the next "sparring round", I think everybody would be happy with it.
People complaining "I want to play HC but I don't want to die permanently in PvP" are just pussies who want to show their e-peen to their friends in PvE, but don't wanna be afraid of dying at PvP. Sparring should solve it all.
I been thinking about HC PvP and i think this could turn into an epic money making scheme for Blizzard. Call it the Gladiator arena, only 1v1, if you die in the arena that character dies forever!! Since we are already using real money to buy items and sell items why not use real money to give to the winners of these battles. So each player who participates puts his money in and the winner takes all and/or get the other players equipment (perhaps a portion goes to blizzard so they can support this kind of mode). Now if it were odds like that i bet lots of people would attempt this. Ofcourse they need to include a practise arena for you HC characters where you can safely practise against other guys to up your playing skills before you take the big leap into the death pits. This also gives better incentive to buy better equipment etc. How cool would it be to observe virtual gladiator battles in diablo 3. Only problems i foresee is if someone DC's theres going to be an uproar especially if its Blizzard's fault and whether Blizzard is willing to take the time to balance the arena modes (which i believe they not interested in at the moment).
So waddya guys think? Or has this been mentioned eons ago
The HC death penalty should be kinda like 'racing for pinks'. The winner gets the loser's toon and all it's gear. He can then decide what he wants to do with it. If hes nice, give it back, maybe sell it back, or even better go duel with it and try to win another...
Okay probably not going to happen but it would be kinda qewl to have a 'stable' of toons that you have won...
A little closer to reality is maybe a week long res timer on a hardcore pvp kill. You lose and that toon stays dead for a week. Make him a ghost and you cant even access his gear for the week. That sounds pretty painful.

Get real, folks, the diablo you all knew is dead, a few years ago i said right here in this forum that D3 had a pretty good chance of being blizzard first bust (i was flamed to death ofc), and what you know, its not even beta and its already looking that way.
What does everyone else gather from this?

There is no RMAH for HC.
The last thing we need is Blizzard tainting the last piece of diablo we have just because some carebears wants some risk, but not too much risk.
Plus one.
You could have both. If you want a fight to the death, you can have it! If you want to just punch your friend, you can also have it!
