Hi,
i was wordering if ppl think that arena is going to balance or not. I hope they could make it better then they have in WoW. because there you have to have a healer in almost every matchsup. i know at to dps goes but not i the really high rating
My though on this that the barbarian seems a litte to overpowered by having a lot of cc and dmg. and it seems like that class is going to be in every matchups. a ranged and a barbarian.
I believe Blizzard said they weren't going to balance PvP, which I think would be a travesty. I'm really looking forward to the arena. I'm new to WoW (only 6 years late to the party) and I've loved the setup since I've been playing. I hope they give some attention to it but at the rate they are cutting features who knows.
I think it won't be very balanced, but it will be fun. I think ranged classes might had certain advantages, as well as classes that can regain health. I look foward to it and it should be great, but you might have to be certain classes to be the best of the best.
I would like to see the full balance of the game, especially pvp. After all, PvP component of the most interestingpart of the game and I hope that Blizzard will create something fantastic. I would like to spend hours in amassive pvp battles.
I thought spells had 2 "Groups" lets say, one for PvE and one for PVP so they could balance each without effecting the other one.
I'm really in to PvP so after I have completed the game that is the route I will be heading, so hopefully both PvE and PvP will be balanced as best as they can.
funnily guild war already has something like this, a lot of skills work differently in pvp compared to pve, since diablo 3 already took the guild war skill system might as well do that to balance pvp.
After Playing WoW for a very long time, I think there will be a great deal of balance to the game. PvP and PvE are simliar in a way that they need to be able to pull their own weight as a team, but also be able to solo. I have found that in WoW, the people that konw what their doing, reguardless of class, are the best. Sure, some abillites are more useful depending on situations, but i've seen games where people make PvP healers that do damage, and totally own with them, and people who make tanks that die in 2 seconds. I think that the amount of cuztomization and options for each charricter really makes balance happen. It also helps when evolving the strategty of the game, finding that new perfict combo against the current popular builds can really help with balance. I think in the end, people who are better at games like Diablo are going to own, and people who are not as good will have to learn alot. It will be balanced.
I don't think that they are going to balance it perfectly. However with the massive outcry from the community for some kind of balance, I think they will try, but any form of esport tourneys are going to have preset gear ect you can pick from. With that said, I do hope they add an arena ladder or something ranked shortly after release in which you have flat stats, and your gear is just there for looks. Its a route many pvp games have went recently that also have a pve, and I think it would be a perfect place to do it here as well. Having gear not count in arena would be good, but allow gear in the "team deathmatch" pvp system they have atm.
I think by the nature of it being balanced for PvE, its going to be pretty balanced for PvP. Think, if you can survive a hord of high level enemies, you can probally survive a charracter who cannot survive the same hord, reguardless of the class they play. The classes have to be balanced to be able to play the game, and based on that, they will likely MOSTLY have the same chance surviving each other. As I mentioned before, players who know what they are doing will have a better chance of winning a PvP battle then players who dont. I think it will get a small cult following type of thing, but even in D2 and D, there was not emphasis on PvP. Also, in D2, I have seen charricters of the same level, with simliar gear quality, and reguardless of class, the better PvP player would always win. This is what I observed from years of playing where someone could switch charricters and still win the match against an opponent who had a precived 'advantage' over them.
Also, take a good look at WoW. The builds for the game really let you have a variety of different charricters. There are PvP builds, and there are PvE builds. Blizzard aknowleged this, and allowed dual talent spec. This allowed you to have a second build for a charricter, so this way you could have a PvP and PvE charricter. They even lowered the level requirement and cost for this abillity and it made PvP very balanced. If they allow this kind of feature in Diablo 3, that would be awsome. This would allow people to prepair for a PvP battle, or just prepair for a new act in which enemies have different resistances/weaknesses.

Guild wars 1 was unbalanced for a long time. It's well balanced right now, but it took a really long time. About the time people left the game. Diablo 3 took it as their own idea because blizzard has learned so much from WoW. They pve players are like "quit balancing for pvp" haha. It was a funny thread. Too much flame though.
It will never be balanced. Balancing PvP and PvE is impossible and its the reason why WoW can't be balanced after 6 years.
It can be however the work involved is huge. balancing 2v2 is so hard so blizzard chose to ignore it and focus on 3v3 as being the most balanced arena size. Battlegrounds have always been balanced (cept for shamans in vanilla ;))

Unfortunately I don't see that happening ever. Blizzard have already come out and declared that their focus is not to balance pvp, but to create a fun alternative to pve from time to time.

Yes I can't remember the name Jay used but there is the capacity to do that. They use it for cc abilities and such, mainly to reduce the time people are stuck in a cc affect or slowed. Blizzard however seem to be pretty adamant that they will not spend as much time focusing on the pvp balance as opposed to the fun in PVE. if a move throws a huge fireball that blows everyone away and takes off half their health, they probably don't what to chance that for pvp either because people will find it a fun concept and idea.
When I played at the last Blizzcon it seemed incredibly balance everyone had two offensive spells (one minor And one major that needed cool downs or genorators which is what the minor is for) the had two crowd controls (leap tele spirt walk)then they all had a defensive buff and an offensive buff. I played a barb and my friends played the wizard and the WD and all three of us averaged about 19 kills very consistantly even when we switched around classes. It is ALL about skill and teamwork.
As some of the other posts have mentioned. This game will not be completely balanced. BUT lets take a step back and think about this from another direction. Is perfect balance really the best option for a game like d3?
To reference wow, way back in the beginning, rather that perfect balance, there was a rock/paper/scissors type philisophy. You knew if you were a rogue, you would probably destroy the mage or lock in your sights. You knew if you were a mage, you would destroy the warrior picking herbs over yonder, etc. With this system, players new to pvp or with terrible gear could still make themselves useful by focus targetting certain classes, while more experienced or better geared pvpers could essentially still kill anyone they set their sights on.
The other benifit of a rock/paper/scissors model is that team make-up becomes more interesting. It goes from a royal rumble to a more strategy based environment.
I hope that the arena system will be like wow. and i do not agree that you say you need a healer in almost every matchsup.
in wow ive played both 2vs2 and 3vs3 with pure dps team and reached almost 2k on both teams :).
cant wait for diablo 3 to realise tho PVP FTW!
I hope they don't try to balance PVP to be honest, i hope it just balances itself. In Diablo 2 do you think they balanced PVP? No of course they didnt but people still loved it. I would still get wrecked by some random Feral druid as a hammerdin because, well he raped me nothing more nothing less... not to mention it is not rated like WoW (and i hope it never is) i hope its just something to screw around with and play with friends, that is all.

I hope they'll balance it good cuz it would be kinda boring if there was only 4v4 barbarians against each other.
Not likely.
"Of course you can play any character in PvP...except those that aren't the barbarian. Those all suck. But other than that you are golden." --Do you really see Blizzard letting that happen?
Every class will be at least viable. It doesn't mean Wizard won't > Monk, or DH > Barbarian or whatever, but this will be on a case to case basis. As jaco111 wisely posted, it will be about the skill of the player and working together. They won't release with one class having an obvious major advantage over all the others. And if they do, they will fix it.
These people do this for a living, our trust will be rewarded.
I will say with confidence, at the very least for the first year of the game, PvP will be completely ignored. This entire game as it lies is ALL about its PvE, so don't hold your breath, but don't give up hope either.
I was wondering the same thing about it being balanced? To me it seems as though there never will be a balance because everyone has their preference. If they actually made everything truly equal then all the classes would be identical. Then it would become bland and no one would like it that much. (IMO) I hope they at least make an effort just like in WOW to try to make it close to fair. But to have PVP and show it no attention would be a total bust.
With the amount of build variation, it definitely won't be all that balanced and personally I don't think that's really a bad thing. It's good to reward people for putting a lot of time and effort developing good builds. I'm sure it will be one of the main focuses after release though. From what I've seen it doesn't seem like any one class is particularly over or under powered.

Thanks Caniroth for the awesome sig!

You are going to be very surprised.
Not likely.
