Yes. I used the word "hodgepodge." It is a silly word for a silly concept.
I see many people posting many builds, especially during my time of roaming the official forums. Most builds are simply, incorrect. People just seem to be throwing their favorite skills for their favorite character together.
Nothing wrong with this. Sure I would love to be a Demon Hunter, but I can most realistically do better bashing a Demon Hunter's face in with a monk. And I am sure that there will be demon hunters who can easily shoot an arrow in my monk's face nonstop. My point being, for PvP too many players just seem to playing a character because it is "cool" and not because its their PvP play style - not the character they play best with or will get to know the best.
Players are going for a "cool" character and picking out "cool" skills. This just won't work in PvP. You need a build to counter everything on one character, just like StarCraft 2. I mean, you can use a cool character, just be good with it. Know the builds - know the strategies.
As we should all know there shouldn't be a "one build fits all" scenario. It is not the intention of the game.
Agreed. Similarly to Diablo 2, if you just put skills into the "cool" skills, you end up with a terrible character that can't kill anything past Normal. Since synergies are gone, I've been looking at stacking effects (i.e. Demon Hunter could stack snare/paralyze). Looking forward to actually testing my builds out!

Same here. That is partially why I came to this forum. Nobody seemed to actually be good enough or knowledgeable about stuff on the official forums, sad as it is. Hopefully I will find some good PvP and PvE friends here!
I agree too but it's to be expected when most of these people aren't in the beta, and even if they are, they are only able to use the first few skills. It's so hard to know what will work in PVP or what people need to worry about countering from other PVP'ers. I think you'll have to wait to get your deep strategy/build analysis until we all get to pay the real thing, Mr. Troll.
This is one area where I think players of WoW will have a huge advantage. The days of D2 dueling are over, it's all about Arena now. So you don't need a build that will counter everything, but between the four of you in the group, you need to. It's going to be a game of rock paper scissors, especially since there won't be any balance around PvP, at least until all the expansions are out and that's all that people are doing. I'm really looking forward to PvP in D3 it should be fun.
But I agree with you, people are mostly throwing together builds that are either way too generic, or that have had way too much thought put into them, and have gone too far in one direction. Honestly, after the first year or so, depending on the release of the first expansion, I see there being a very high majority of players using the WD, the Monk, and the Wizard, it will take a great deal of skill to succeed as a DH but they will be dangerous as well, I don't see the Barbarian being as competitive as the Monk, but still a strong choice not to be ignored.
It's going to come down to group communication, and synergy within the build. Just like in WoW it's going to be about CC chains, knowing your CC DR, and calling out the right burn target at the right time. I can't wait.
