How powerful do you think the Monks healing has the potential to be and do you think at some point every team will want one?
I'm guessing at some point some sort of Breath of Heaven Mantra of Retribution spec with some nice item bonuses will appear and dominate PvP. Until blizz nerfs it of course =P
What are you thoughts? Will a healer class dominate pvp?
The monk will be a valuable asset to any team I'm sure but as far as his healing being game changing, I don't think so. Blizzard has implemented health globes into the arenas so even non healing classes will be able to regen life. Couple that with some life leach items and the arena will become much more of a strategic game. The strategy will revolve around controlling certain points at certain times, being able to either get health globes for yourself or keep your opponent from getting them. I see that being a much more deciding factor rather than having a monk or not.
I think Blizzard's current stance on PVP is leave it alone and the community will sort it out -
provide an arena -
forget about balance -
HOWEVER
after the game has been baked in and an expansion well on its way I am sure they will focus a bit more on the arena -
some of the balancing things that might be easy is to add longer cooldowns on healing skills while in an arena -
this would make the monk choose to maybe add 1 healing spell that can be used in an emergency rather than a default spell that is constantly spammed and constantly topping the monk off -
I guess we will have to wait and see!
I hope they look at balancing and modifying how things work in arena

Thats an interesting thought. have you guys seen the videos of Blizzcon of people playing with this Aura on? It does seem to heal for a decent amount! Though...I dont know how good it will be against lets say...a barb smashing you in your face. or a Wiz throwing a meteor in your area! I think its more based around "ok i took damage now its time for me to run away!! lol" and regen a little health
Considering the only real class we can consider to heal would be the monk, and that the monk can't put out more than a couple heals before having to attack to get his spirit up, I say no a healer won't dominate pvp.
In any match up you're losing dps potential to have that person try to heal. As far as the monk goes it's very hard for the monk to build up spirit; It takes awhile and you have to be toe to toe the whole time. This means healing will be very hard, and most likely not that effective. Healing will defiantly be nice in something like the arena, but I seriously doubt it will be completely needed or even that useful.
I'm pretty sure that some form of a support monk is going to be amazing in arena. I don't think the intent is heal people for 45 mins matches or anything, but if you've ever played a game like LoL, supports there cannot heal for much or all that often either, but still make a tide turning mark on the game. I think the same is going to be true with support / heal / aura monks, and possible disabler barb / tank kind of builds in the pvp enviornment.
Of course they cant just heal eachother all match, the class is not designed that way. You attack, do damage, build spirit, pop a defensive skill if you need to and heal. If powerful enough it could make the difference of surviving just long enough to land a kill or getting killed. Combined with skills like Serenity it's going to be tought to rush down a monk. Bubble, heal, repeate. I have a feeling the monk is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

This is not WoW in the sence that there will be a "healer" class... wrong game.
With different builds and items, all class stand an even chance to kill one another is already pvp game balance, unless there is really an OP build that just dominates which and really easy to play than everyone will come to the forums and bitch about it and blizzard will probably fix it.
I do belive at some point the healer will be somewhat "op" in that factor. Seeing as the monk is looking quite shiny. However, I got my hands on Blizz taking care of this way before it will happen.
I'm putting my trust in Blizzard and believing that no class/build will dominate PvP. They'v learnt a lot from past games and I think they can make constructive assesments from the beta. That being said there will always be arguements about balancing characters. I think healing will have to play a role in PvP other wise it would not have been incorporated. Redundant skills would b a waste of the dev teams time (i.e. +1 Light Radius)
first off i don't know if bliz's philosophy on the pvp will change in the future , but for now they r not planning to balance skills according to pvp, they will take that into account when they balance towards pve.
as for healer class dominate pvp - i don't believe any 1 char can be classified as a healer only class, and even if some1 manage to make a build which have only 1 purpose which is healing, it won't be a good spec - cuz diablo isn't build that way. i won't go as far as to say no1 will have some kind of healing/regan life skill or side skill, there r alot of skills(in every class) which help u in that department without compromising the dmg output or the utility it have. furthermore BoH skill of the monk just got a 15 sec CD on this patch - which makes it even less useful if u wanted to make the monk healer class only and spam that skill in pvp.
so bottom line is, i don't believe a healer class will dominate pvp and even if there r all kind of regan/healing skills they won't be the focus in a pvp builds.
thats just my opinion however any1 can disagree with that and thats fine
best regards,
I think not, because most characters have healing moves of their own. Instead of focusing on keeping heals up and not putting out damage. Your teammates will be getting hacked away. leaving you left to fight two people. I think a healer will be needed in the later difficulties but in pvp i feel like everyone needs to be well rounded and self reliant.
I just hope they don't make the mistake of thinking length of time to kill someone going up increases the fun and skill involved in pvp.
The same goes for pve really in my opinion. If they just removed the monk healing of other people than themselves that would be nice. And put a cap on healing taken so that monks could do whatever they want with their self healing skills without going over the healing taken you could get from lifestealing equipment.
If monk dominates pvp I hope it's from damage dealing/utility(not healing).
I honestly believe healers will not be OP in pvp teams. Blizzard will give characters tools to deal with them. Plus if he's busy healing.. he's not doing damage...
Going along the same lines as many here, I don't think a healing monk will be OP. This game isn't designed to be your standard healing/tank/dps rpg trio, but rather focusing on any class being able to dish out damage. While the monks healing capabilities will come in handy, I don't think it will be to much of an issue to the point where it will need to be nerfed. The damage output (hopefully) will be enough that the monk won't be able to worry about just healing.
And as Pro902 says, if he's just focused on healing, he isn't doing any damage.
I think the monk will bring a lot of good support. I still think classes will be able to do enough damage to go without the monk. The monk will help but not be a necessity to do well.
I think there will probably be a lot of crowd control, like how you see in WoW. Rogue/Mage, or other good combinations take out healing/dmg combination with the right skills. I think it only depend on the players, but then again, Diablo is not looked at as a PVP game.

I'm interested in the Monk's instant attacks, and how they can stop a mage's spells or teleport. That stuff used to drive me nuts.

Which is a shame becasuse healing class can be cool but i dont know wheather or not they have a place in diablo.
