Well I hope they allow a form of dueling too, to just mess around with friends and whatnot when outside of town.
edit: Just so we're on the same page, a duel as in both/all players have to accept before the fists start flying, and can be ended at any point in time.
I would like a duel system, a no rewards, just-for-fun dueling system to quickly test your meddle against friends.
I'm pretty new to the site, mostly a lurker but pvp was always my fav. So I feel its only right to have my first post here.
God, I'm gonna miss hostile. Any game I play i always shoot to be the best in, and pvp was HUGE in D2 its amazes me how many people disliked it here. It wasnt balanced per say, but that wasnt exactly what made it fun....the whole world was a pvp battleground, fighting over a diablo clone? hell yes, get pissed off at someone in your baal run? Hostile and hunt him down!!!! Just so many memories staying up all night pvping with my friends, I'll always miss those good times. Going into a pvp game hostileing every one and it just being a huge free for all, and who could beat out every one and just destroy the whole game and wipe the floor with people.
Over the years I became very wealthy in D2, I played a BvC for years. Fully geared, I'm talking full 3/20/20's, Un-named Wizzies (before they got hugly duped). I then named them Craig's Wizzard Spike Gloves :D! Perm imps, cant recall the names of the rings, but they were the two insane rare quality rings one was storm somthing? near perfect anni, and hell fire charm after it came out. If i remember correctly I used perfect ebotd axe with a e-buged beast? and the sexy 08 valk, ect ect you get the point. Point is, the whole fun part of D2 was to just simply destroy people and have a great time with friends pvping in 1v7 games!
My best friend at the time played a Orb sorc, so we pretty much just went into pvp games and 2v6'd every one and it was GG! gonna miss those days, they were truely epic and fun. I do get that not every one is in it for that reason, but thats what passworded games are for if you dont want your fun ruined by pvp. It makes me sad to see four person limit in games and no hostile ability, Its obvious those days are gone but none the less the memories will always last and i'm glad I got to experiance the epicness that was D2 in its prime. I've been itching to restart playing but man it would be brutal starting over from scratch after having so much in that game. I really hope arena in D3 will capture some of that old school pvp that was d2, but I doubt it. I guess all we can hope for is maybe they will add in the ability to go hostile in a future patch!
PvP has always been an afterthought even in D1 and D2.
This. This is why it was terrible in D2, and this is why I like what they're doing with it in D3; they're thinking about it from an early stage and planning it in a way that will be fun, rather than tacking on a broken system that hurt more than it helped.
How geared were people that disliked the pvp? Not trying to bash on any one, but it blows my mind that people could dislike such an amazing part of the game. I mean if you were in full tal gear, or... w/e the barb set was ect ect then I could understand how it must have been painful, but anyone that had played for years and actually had put time and effort into a character to be the true best it could be I dunno those people always loved it. At least that was my exp. with people I came across on CC-comp, and other boards.
EDIT: The hardcore people I understand, the hacks ect would make it very UN-fun. But again...passworded games. Even remove it from hardcore, but would have been nice to keep it in the SC section of gameplay.
I used to PKK on the Euro HC ladder, it was quite enjoyable managing to catch a PKr while he was trying to catch some defenseless lower level character.
But in general the hostile feature was for griefers and those that like to sucker punch people, since it wasn't a challenge/accept kind of thing.
No hostility means I can finally play in game without being forced to either 1) leave or 2) make a private game every single time I wish to play, to avoid player vs player game play when I don't feel like it. This improves two things for me and everyone else who plays.
1. Uninterrupted enjoyable gameplay
2. less amount of unesscary games on the servers.
I want the ability to CHOOSE when I want to engage in player vs player gameplay not whenever other people want to. That's a decision you already have with arenas and I will make use of them aswell, so stop moaning and be grateful.
You mean the mechanic that forced most people to password their games?
Either that, or everyone got griefed in an open game.
Both of those scenarios suck.
I agree that maybe once in a while some really fun/cool PVP matches that could go on for hours could come out of it, but it was used for straight up griefing 99% of the time.
The thing I liked most about WoW was world pvp and griefing, even being griefed. Yeah I got mad from time to time and (almost always) others got mad, but it kept things interesting. With that said this is diablo, not wow, and I've since learned that itemized RNG pvp is a heaping pile of crap, and that you should probably play a competitive game that has a real focus on competitive play and balance to get those competitive impulses and feelings worked out.
Watching this video just proves so much about why pvp sucked in Diablo. I have always been the type to appreciate pvp that is skill-based (player skill, not character skill - just to be clear), not the garbage displayed in this video.

Playing a Wizard. Looking for Demon Hunters to play with.
Hostility? No thanks. Like I said in other threads, it will just isolate players, and create passworded/private games. Not good for the community to have a bunch of douche bags running around killing you, getting in your way, annoying you, spamming you, destoryed your quest run.... totally worthless... let the Arena handle all your PvP aggression.

How about the Drop Hack that freezes your game while they are free to search and kill you - yes you stayed online that entire time.
Sucks when you prefer hardcore and forced to hide in private solo games. I welcome the Diablo 3 PVP IMPROVEMENTS! ( ie no world PVP)

The templar makes it quite clear what they do to criminals in his lands.

Edit: And more to the point, see how the rest of the group reacted? That's not fun for the majority, and that video proves it. So again. Hell no.
