Okay, I'm a sucker for indie games (except D3 and SC2 all games I purchased in the past 5 years were indie games, IIRC). I really wanted to like Terraria and tried it a couple of times, but always failed. Here's what I've done:
- Purchased, started, and stopped after 35 minutes (according to Steam); can't really remember the reason but I guess I just didn't know what to do.
- Took a look at it again today, just did some random stuff, night approaches, I'm dead. Restart. Watched a beginner's video from the Terraria wiki, how to build shelter etc.
- Created a new game, build shelter for me and the annoying guide (who doesn't care for it and rather stays on an elevated hill). I wonder: how the hell can I skip night time? Am I just doomed to wait for 9 minutes to get 15 minutes of playtime? I'm just a starter, so not much to do at night yet. Start to create a backwall for my shelter to waste some time. All of the sudden, zombies open up the door (WTF?). Dead. Quit.
So, even after watching the tutorial video I have no idea how to start this game. I mean, there's no way I can fight the zombies, but I also don't wanna spend half the playtime watching darkness. Help?
I've found out that checking online tutorial videos for Terraria or Minecraft doesn't really cut it, since there's so much underlying advanced knowledge and small tips/tricks that are important afterwards, and that you will only know when you're a more experienced player.
One of these is how king control is in Terraria (in particular), and how the natural caves that are created when the world is generated have some useful resources. Also, small control tips (like the contextual Shift + targetting) that will help on the long term.
The best way to start out these games (imho) is to do it with someone else. Once you're past a certain point, that's when you'll start discovering things for yourself and developing your own playstyle.
For the first night, if things go as planned, you can either start building a big shelter that will house NPCs (which will sell very useful things) and set it all up, or you can start digging downwards in hopes of finding some ore that will become your first pieces of gear.
If you're up for it, I'd love to play it with you and guide you through the early steps. If you just want to read the more important tips (and play on your own terms), let me know and I'll compile a (check)list of important stuff for days 1-5.
zero_ps is my steam talk to you there later... (I'll probably be on in about 3-4 hours, if I don't pass out from sleep)
I might give it another try today, just not sure which time - gotta do some errands and wanna watch soccer today (two really big matches coming up ;-)). I'll add you when I have the time to play a bit.
Should we add Bagstone to out nice little world? He'll learn fast, or die trying
Zero gave me a nice introduction to the greatness of Terraria on Saturday. I played quite a few hours after that - so my main issues are solved. I'm able to survive and, more importantly, explore now ;-)
That being said, I definitely would "die trying" right now rather than "learn fast" since I'm still way too squishy. Only wearing a stupid 11 damage spear, but at least I've got 20 def and 200 HP. I haven't got further down than maybe 2-3 levels, I guess, so I think that should be my next move. Well, deaths seem to be really punishing in Terraria, aren't they? If you die deep down in a dungeon it takes ages to get back there, and you lose a lot of your money, I'm essentially broke all the time... but at least I'm at a point now where I wanna learn more and "dig deeper" (literally).
wanna watch soccer today (two really big matches coming up ;-)).
and both went so well
On topic: What's the cost of this game? Sounds like I might want to try it out. I'm already done with Hearthstone, I guess, only debating with myself if I take the time to write down some feedback on it

Well, only one of them went well (the Ruhrderby). Not too happy about some of the other results this weekend
I'm currently on the fence on how to proceed - I could read the Terraria wiki which would greatly speed up my learning curve such that maybe in a few days or week I could join the "big guys" like maka and zero. Or (and I think that's what I'll do) I'll spend my precious few hours of gaming time during the week on exploring the world on my own to not spoil anything - but it means it'll take me a looong time before I finally catch up.
Glad you're starting to explore now, man Look for them golden chests, they usually contain awesome weapons and accessories. Probably the most important item that you wanna find at this stage is a Magic Mirror, so you can teleport back to your "home" without having to die (Esc -> Exit works too, though).
And surviving in caves is a matter of experience. Dodging monsters, seeing traps before stepping on them, exploring chasms without taking fall damage, are all things you'll learn in due time
Let me know if you want to play some more today. I'll be available the whole day.

It's 10 US$ (dollars). There was a sale recently where it was like 75% off, probably something like 2-3 dollars. If you're on EU, it's probably something like 5-7 €.

*Hysterically laughs* oh, people still think we pay the same or less in Europe? Nope. It's almost always 1:1. 10 Euros, so for us it's about $14 USD. But we're used to that...
On sale it was 7.99 Euros ($11 USD).
@On topic: you just blew my mind with teleporting home by exiting the game. On the other hand, the long way back is so annoying, I just wanna go deeper and deeper and deeper and don't wanna go home... but maybe I should, at some point. Also, I'm not sure what I'm saving up for; would you recommend buying a miner's helmet? Putting torches everywhere is so annoying...
Oh, and I think I found some golden chests, but haven't found anything interesting yet, always the usual Shuriken or Blowpipe and some lead bars... ;-) No locked chest though, so I guess that's where the real loot comes in.
The Mining Helmet is really good for exploring, just remember that it has to be equipped in your actual Helmet slot in order to work (so you lose some defense and the "set bonus"), it doesn't work in the Vanity slot
So you have to consider the trade-off. Never having to worry too much about using a light source, against the fact that you are somewhat squishier.
Digging deeper is always a good idea Gold/Platinum ore becomes a lot more common the lower you go. Just watch out when you start seeing lava, as it's the last layer before the Underworld! And you're not ready for it, young padawan!
Also, the blue chests in the UndergroundSnow Biome have some sweet gear, might wanna start looking for those.
And use the Amethysts you've found to craft yourself your first Grappling Hook (needs 15, or some Iron Chains and a "Hook", this latter being a rare drop from Piranhas/Skeletons). E is the Grapple shortcut (doesn't need to be "equipped", just leave it in the inventory) and it's one hell of a tool for spelunking.

That's okay. I'm only wearing Lead armor, anyways; most of my def comes from accessory items, I guess. And a Pharaoh set (helm+chest) in my vanity slots... ain't replacing that with miner's hat

Got quite a few gold bars already, actually. But haven't checked out what other weapons I can make with gold (checked some stuff at the guide and there was a nice wand, but I'm missing rubies; found 4 other gems but no rubies yet). Haven't seen lava yet IIRC, so I should be save by now ;-) You know how deep that is, though? (I have a depth measurement device, which is awesome, just like in real-life but the opposite - for elevation on my hikes ;-)). Haven't found platinum yet.
One thing that is kinda annoying (and so great about D3) is that you need to have all materials in your inventory to see what you can craft. I have lots of chests in my home to put all the ore, bars, crafting materials, statues, basically everything there.
Also, the blue chests in the UndergroundSnow Biome have some sweet gear, might wanna start looking for those.
Interesting. Digged a bit through snow underground, but was kinda annoyed after finding nothing after quite a while, and went back to dig deeper on my jungle mine. I shall go back to "Antarctica Mine" then ;-)

Woah nice! I guess "e" is the only key I haven't used yet. I think I have enough amethysts, I'll give this a try.
By the way, I have hundreds of ropes but no idea how to use them. Are they used for rappelling down chasms? How do I put these too use? And as a side note... even after ~10 hours I still haven't found the climbing boots we found in our game on Saturday twice... thinking of transferring it over to my "main char" as I'm sometimes missing them ;-)
Yeah ropes need to be attached to something - you can put them anywhere on your house and on the first level where there is "dirt" background, once it becomes stone the ropes have to be attached to a solid block.
Once they're attached, "using" more ropes on top of the one that's attached will "increase the length of the rope downward".. you can also make the rope grow horizontally by placing it to the "sides" of any part of the rope.
The "crafted rope" (the one that uses 10 rope parts) is thrown when used and can attach to things. It's a very useful tool even after you have a grappling hook.
Ice underground doesn't have better items than the Jungle underground (the green mean jungle with hornets and man eaters at least). I thought you weren't at that power level yet.
Ice underground doesn't have better items than the Jungle underground (the green mean jungle with hornets and man eaters at least). I thought you weren't at that power level yet.
Well, jungle is just another theme of land, isn't it? It seems there is ice, desert, jungle, and the "normal" terrain. And of course the corruption which I stayed away from as you told me (frankly, no need to go there since I have probably explored 1% of the underground close to my home). Not sure if a certain "level" contributes to that, I'm just going to the left and right and exploring the different holes in the ground.
Some things can probably only be learned by trial & error. I built a nice little "village" far away from the spawn point, just to find out that's super stupid - every death would just spawn me far away from home. So I deleted that world and created a new one. Also, although I have a "sky house" some monsters still find a way into my little home. No idea why.
What are fences for, by the way? I haven't really ever tried using them, but I wonder of what use they should be; many mobs can jump quite high or even fly, so a wall/ceiling around the village would be better than a few fences, I guess...? Well, don't really care, I'm never at home anyways
Monsters can spawn almost everywhere. That's probably how they are getting to your sky house.
Fences are background decoration meaning that they won't block you or other player / monsters.
You can just wall off the door entrances when night comes. That way the zombies won't be able to break the doors and get in.
Or just leave one door opened and stand there with a melee weapon like a killing machine... Zombies are really weak once you get a weapon that is not utterly terrible.
Or just leave one door opened and stand there with a melee weapon like a killing machine... Zombies are really weak once you get a weapon that is not utterly terrible.
Oh, I don't care about these monsters anymore, most hit me for 1 damage or so now. I was just thinking... why do I have a house if it's "FFA". Stay out, scumbags. Besides, some nights the zombie attacks kill all my NPCs, they're so weak... feels like babysitting
Yeah, going left and right, exploring on your own and seeing what monsters you can handle is the best way to tell if you're ready for a certain biome. Like, if you get really good at the controls, you can probably go to the Jungle or even the Underworld and kick everyone's ass, even though it's gonna be kinda difficult.
If you can explore the Jungle (the one that has Piranhas in the water, Jungle Bats and Slimes, and Maneaters and Hornets underground) there's a very good chance you can survive in the Corruption already. There are some great items there, but you'll need a Nightmare Pickaxe (made from Demonite ore) to break the corruption tiles/blocks (ebonstone), or Bombs/Dynamite.
You can set your Spawn Point by crafting a "bed" (Cobwebs -> Silk, Silk + Wood -> Bed) and by using it (right clicking). You can make a house at the beach ( :P) and set it as your spawn point.
Monster shouldn't be spawning in your sky-house or even around it when you have some NPCs. Make sure you have at least 4-6 NPCs in it asap, and that the house has enough lightning around it and background walls.

I went into Corruption a bit, wasn't too difficult, should work. But I don't have Demonite ore yet, so I'll wait for that. Think I have ~20 bombs, don't wanna waste them.

And I was just about to ask what the bed is good for. What about the toilet, bathtub and all that stuff, then? My "RPG-like" explanation would be that some upscale NPCs demand a full-blown 5 star hotel room with golden door handles and emerald-covered bed linen, is that the case?
Monster shouldn't be spawning in your sky-house or even around it when you have some NPCs. Make sure you have at least 4-6 NPCs in it asap, and that the house has enough lightning around it and background walls.
Didn't put a background wall on my house to distinguish it from the others (and keep NPCs out). Maybe that was a mistake. I also made a part of the roof with a wooden platform, so I can "jump through the roof" literally
Tonight, I should work on killing that damn annoying Eye of Cthulhu. It doesn't hit too hard, but with my 11 damage spear it takes forever, and I don't wanna use up all my 60 damage grenades...
Bagstone: Focus on enjoying that part of the experience as long as you can, without checking wikis and such. I've played terraria for about 600 hours the last two years (it's like gaming crack to me), and the first part - before you know how to rush the item tiers, semi-exploit the bosses and combine items into builds - is by far the most rewarding part. It's really an exploration game as much as a farming/building game.
I wish nothing more than to be able to unlearn everything and start over.
Re: houses, it is indeed possible to make them entirely safe. I.e. build them high, and use lava at strategic places; just not so high that a wyvern can spawn in hardmode - you can tell that roughly from the treetops in the background image. It is even possible against goblin armies and blood moons, if you use wire to make traps.
Hehe thanks... this is actually true about so many games. I would actually love to "un-read" so many books. Or un-watch movies. How awesome would that be, to watch Sixth Sense a hundred times? ;-)
I'm at ~25 hours now and went to hell yesterday; got about 30 defense, a nice Blood Butcherer and max HP/mana. So I guess I'm not totally noob anymore and beyond some of the exploration - also have to admit that I just had to look up some stuff at the wiki. But it's still awesome. Moving my "homeland" now from my small initial level that I explored quite extensively to a new, large world with a big badass castle. Gotta farm some stone now ;-)
I have seen the lava traps in maka's game, but no idea how to build them. But I'll save that for later - there's still more than enough stuff to do now!
- Purchased, started, and stopped after 35 minutes (according to Steam); can't really remember the reason but I guess I just didn't know what to do.
