My hopes lie in this years Blizzcon. I mean, they have to announce something in the Diablo universe, right? Their other universes just had their releases this or last year (WoW:Legion, SC2:LotV, Overwatch). And I so hope it will be a new Diablo game, not another expansion. This game is so old now. Just think about it. They announced it EIGHT YEARS AGO. It's eight years of talking about it. Eight years of absorbing each bit of information about it. I'm getting tired of D3. The game is superb, but I want something new, something fresh.
I really think it will be another expansion, but more of a rehash as well where they improve the system greatly.
That is the method they have used with WoW, offering major system updates every 2-3 years. They told us from the get go that Diablo will live on forever, so at some point in time we will have a D4, D5, like D6 etc..... They also said they want to aim for 5-7 years before they announce a new game, and then it would likely take 2-3 years to develop, so 7-10 years for D4. We are 4 years into the game, so we have a ways to go.
That being said, an expansion with a major system update can really shed new light on D3 and take it many steps further. I just want them to pick 2-3 features that the game excels at, and make them even better. Stop adding power creep and other random features. Just make what is already present even better.
I also think that with the point we are at with an ARPG, what else can you really do to improve them. New developers constantly try, but they all feel the same. Adding MMO features is absolutely the next step. Grim Dawn hit it right on the head with reputations that allow access to different gear, cosmetics, etc... I hope Diablo brings something like that to the table. If they do not want the gear to be what the grind is focused on, they can at least give us something other than +5 main stat to grind. Reputations do allow that.
Often times they delete posts if they covered similar topics, or flamed out and went way off topic.
Blizzard has never really been one to tip their hats, so removing your post for that sake would make little sense.
In reality, we should expect D4 and/or D3 Xpac2. As you said, they can either continue the story of the Nephalim, and their urge for power. Or, they can reboot because Malth freed all of the demon lords from the Black Soulstone. I am fine with whichever path they take, because they have set a great foundation of future story telling that I cannot wait to be a part of as a player.
