never said the angel was going about finding redemption the right way. I was seeing it more as the story of John Constantine int he comic Hellblazer where he knows he's destined to go to hell but he keeps killing demons so maybe heaven will take him one day though it won't work.

I think generally the Heavens frown upon interfering in mortal matters.
Once a faithful servant of heaven, your hero was cast down for his (or her) past deeds. s/he has lost the ability to fly, but some of his/her original power remains. His/her mission in fighting the minions of hell is to somehow show to tyreal and others that he is worthy of heaven and wants to get back in their good graces. Aside from being a powerful warrior, the Fallen Angel also bears powerful group blessings and powerful light magic.
The class itself would have a tyreal-esque look without wings or pronounced wings. It's resource system could be a divine light based sphere that would be drained but constantly regenerate.
This would be a true hybrid of melee and magic and would make for a unique character class with an interesting story.

this could be why they were cast out.
