Mmm well yeah, your skills depend on DPS; so higher DPS = higher damage.
Quote from Ult15
2) When a weapon says: "+20-70 Cold Damage", etc. I thought that meant it will only make my cold SPELLS (like Ray of Frost, perhaps) do more damage. Someone told me this impacts all abilities anyway - what?
That sort of damage is on the weapon itself. In this instance (wizard), I think it only adds to your DPS and no extra "cold damage" since skills only depends on DPS. If you will physically hit the enemy with that weapon, THEN you'll do "+20-70 Cold Damage". So for a range class the "+ damage" adds to your DPS and not to specific skills.
Quote from Ult15
3) When an item has + regular damage (as in, +3-10 damage), is this desirable? Should I be looking for items with this? How does it compare to INT?
Doesn't all weapons have this? Anyway it's almost the same as above. It's "extra" damage that adds to your DPS, which in return makes your skills better. INT as in Intelligence? This obviously makes the wizard's attack damage better. (I think, I've only played the monk and DEX increase my attack damage. Just hover over each in your inventory and you'll see what stats makes what better).
Quote from Ult15
4) Sometimes I'm looking for a weapon and I notice some have +% dmg, (like +17% damage). Is this a massive boost? Should I be looking for weapons with high DPS AND + % damage?
+17% damage is additional damage to your weapon's base damage. ie base damage = 100 damage. With +17% = 117 damage. So this is good to have. Whether this is already calculated into the weapon's DPS is probably correct, but I'm not sure. So basically you want high DPS. When you compare your items, everything on the weapon's popup is included, so you just have to compare and see how it changes.
Mmm, I sort of the same thing damage wise.
1. Base damage: 100 + 17% damage. Attack speed = 0%. Thus, lets say you do 117 damage/sec.
2. Base damage: 100 + 17% attack speed (never this high, usually 3-5%.). Somewhere in the region of 117 damage/sec or something.
But again. You only have to check, when you compare your weapons, which is better.
Quote from Ult15
6) ^ Begs the question. 1H v 2H. I was using a 2H at the start, seemed they always had higher DPS. Switched to a 1H and a shield recently to help with defense/kiting. I read that 1H is better in Hell+ because you no longer channel one of those beams (which a 2H does better because it casts in longer?) and you cast quick single-button-press spells (like orb/signature) more quickly? However, people seemed to disagree about which type of weapon is better.
2H usually = more DPS, but the attacks are slow thus your casting will be slow.
One or two 1H = lower DPS, but the attacks are faster thus faster casting speed.
It depends what sort of skills you use. ie My monk uses two 1 handed weapons cause the monk generate spirit with attack hits. So faster weapons = more spirit gen. Dunno the wizards's skills, but if you for instance have like +100 health per hit, faster weapons will be better.
Quote from Ult15
7) What kind of stats on the rest of my gear should I be aiming for - Hell Act 2+? Currently have 20k health, 5k DPS. Seems like my DPS should be higher. Should I be getting VIT on everything?
I think INT gives the wizard better damage or something. Mmm, depends how you're doin atm. If I kill demons easily, I'll rather "upgrade" my VIT and keep my DPS like it is and switch as I see fit.
Quote from Ult15
8) Does weapon DPS listed on the item INCLUDE the modifiers that are on it? Or is that calculated before.
I thinks it's included in the DPS. Blizz said they specifically did it like this, so we don't have to use 3de party apps to calculate your DPS...like in D2.
Hope this help...hope this is correct! :Thumbs Up: -

I'm still progressing through Inferno, but so far - as a wizard - I find the item stats I prefer most are Int and Vit, obviously. When I see Dex and Str on an item, I really don't care. Although you can reckon that this arrangement sets items apart, but so far it feels like Str and Dex on items are negligible. What I find important on items are Int to raise my damage and Vit for survival and the item's armor. Str on an item raises my overall armor by such a fraction that its not even worth looking at, the same goes for Dex as a dodge source. I'm already building Int, so my resist goes up with my damage, so why should I care about Str or Dex.Quote from ragemaw
I don't think they wanted to remove the importance of Vitality. They wanted you to be able to alter your stats using your gear instead of the choices you made when you were still low lvl and didn't necessarily understand stat allocation.
I'd like it if these two stats could at least be raise to be a bit more prominent. For instance, if I find gloves with lower Int than the ones I'm carrying, but it has a good amount of Dex, I'd like to stop for a moment and wonder if the trade off of lowering my damage by a bit would be worth the good amount of dodge I'd be gaining. That's what I mean. A good Dex item should still be for the DH and monk, but I'd appreciate it if the stats rolled on items would at least carry some incentives for me to mull over, instead of me just looking for a few very valuable affixes that trumps all others.
P.S. In no way am I trying to appear as if I'm whining. This is just a extra dynamic that I've noticed late game that I'd like to be present. -

UberN00b posted a message on D3: Unfinished. Blizzard dropped the ball.1 - The AH's interface is shit and it just feels squashy. I'm not talking about latency for sending requests to the server. I'm talking about clicking the different dropdowns and such. It's just not snappy enough. I hate it. But meh, at least we have one, right?Posted in: Diablo III General Discussion
2 - Champions are supposed to be harder. They have random abilities that are hard to deal with. They also drop the most/best gear. These are the premise of loot farming. Bosses have the exact same abilities and mechanics every run. It's only going to get easier with them.
3 - We're freakishly infatuated with D3. Of course we beat it in a week. ALSO, this is not an MMO people. You can beat a boss solo, so wtf did you expect? No one can beat Deathwing solo; it takes a GROUP of people ALL well-geared and playing well to do that which takes MUCH TIME. See the difference? Diablo is Whack-A-Mole with blood, gore, and demonic denizens skinned over. You can only get so deep with this type of play and control.
4 - The fact it took you so long to progress in D2 and you apparently totally facerolled D3 doesn't mean it's bad. Maybe you changed? Maybe your gaming skills got better, bruh? Maybe your expansive gaming knowledge and experience coming back to a Diablo game just doesn't measure up?
5 - As someone mentioned, the loot tables are littered with Legendaries for ALL LEVELS AND ALL DIFFICULTIES. Because you haven't found one yet doesn't mean it was a bad idea. Just because the yellows you are wearing have better stats than the Legendaries you've seen so far doesn't mean the game is ruined. It means you need to read more, farm more, search the AH more, and QQ less.
The End. -

I'm with you on hardcore. Funny I felt the urgency to get through the game when the characters put in the pressure how time was of the essence. I found myself pounding through the game faster than normal, what was I to do? I had to save Sanctuary for the Gods sakes! Which of course got me killed more than I would have otherwise with my usual slower more methodical approach. I'm loving the game though, so worth the wait!Quote from succubus_queen
Well, half way through nightmare. still liking the game, but I'm sure of one thing. It's going to be a long time until I'm good enough to feel confident trying hardcore. Deaths have ramped up in a drastic way.

Sure put it in your signature, hell push comes to shove I'm certain I can find a computer around at my job I can send you that will do the trick for nothing. I'll make sure it has a decent graphics card, we're replacing a bunch of computers right now and are just going to donate them off. Message me with a shipping address and I'll have it out to you in a week.
I live in Argentina, but if you can hook me up, I'll pay for the shipment, how much could it cost? XD
Thx Don, worry not, but if Nacho want's a donation pool for D3 that would be cool. -

toad1701a posted a message on An analysis: Number of builds for each class.Hey Everyone,Posted in: Diablo III General Discussion
*** This post and it's calculations holds true ONLY if you play NON-elective mode or default skill mode ***
*** The math below represents the lowest amount of skill combinations because in the initial calculation, I do not consider rune variations *** (however I did calculate that too)
I’ve seen a lot of math done out there to provide clarity on skill combinations (viable or not) comparing diablo 2 to diablo 3 when playing in non-elective mode. What we need to consider is that, in the case of the d3 barbarian who has 22 active skills, is that they are divided up into level sets. So, again in non-elective play, first time around you have to pick 1 of 3 and then on the next set you have to pick 1 of 4 and so on. In total, assuming your character level is maxed out, you have to pick 6 active skills. In another words, you can’t pick “bash” on your right mouse button skills or assign it to your number pads in non-elective mode. Once you pick one in that set, the others are locked out. So in the case of the barbarian there is exactly 22 active skills and then you get to pick 3 out of 16 passive skills. The problem and formula for it is as follows:
If you have to choose 1 item from six different categories, and then 3 out of
16 separate items, how many combinations are there?
Set 1 Choose 1 of 3
Set 2 Choose 1 of 4
Set 3 Choose 1 of 4
Set 4 Choose 1 of 4
Set 5 Choose 1 of 4
Set 6 Choose 1 of 3
Set 7 Choose 1 of 16
Set 8 Choose 1 of 15
Set 9 Choose 1 of 14
[(3x4x4x4x4x3)(16!/13!)] = 7,741,440 total combinations.
There is 7 million, 741 thousand, 440 total possible combinations (not billions). Now what’s great about this is that the way the “sets” are set up makes a vast majority of these combinations viable… of course depending on the gear. Now others will take this farther to say the 5 rune variations (or 6 rune effects if you choose to use “no rune”…which is pointless) greatly magnifies the variations. Here are the results of that effect:
[(15x20x20x20x20x15)(16!/13!)] = 120,960,000,000… not including the “no rune effect” option. This provides us with 15,625 times more variations. In other words, for every 1 of the original 7,741,440 combinations in equation 1, there is 15,625 variations due to rune effects.
[(18x24x24x24x24x18)(16!/13!)] = 361,184,624,640… which does include “no rune effect” option. Likewise with this equation, for every 1 of 7,741,000 combinations, there is 46,656 variations due to rune effects including “no rune”.
Its hard to say how many of those are going to viable, but the way the Blizzard has these skills separated and setup, it seems initially like an intelligent system in place to naturally have these 6 options work well together along with the 3 passive skills. Now we’ll have to see how uber the gear is setup, but we can assume Blizzard created gear to enhance player builds and options.
Now on Diablo 2
Now if we look at Diablo 2 and focus on the Paladin. The benefit of diablo 2 is that we know pretty much everything there is to know. It’s widely accepted that the Paladin has generally the largest amount of viable builds… somewhere around 10. Looking at www.diabloii.net under the strategy guide section, you can good a good list of effective builds. The Paladin has 10, the Barb has 9, the Necro 5, the Amazon 5, and the Sorceress has about 5. Now I know people will call foul here so for the sake of argument, lets double that number. Lets just say that the number of viable- hell difficulty Paladins is 20. Still not satisfied, how about 50 builds for the Paladin? Keep in mind that there are 30 skills total with no variation to them. Plus most, if not all builds, require that at least 3 skills are maxed, taking 60 points with about 12 points in pre requisites (in which you don’t have a choice there) out of the total available of 110. Most builds level up at least 1 or 2 of a level 30 skills and very few players use lower level skills as a primary attacker (Go Skeletons!) but instead for synergies. I haven’t seen too many hell driven fire-bolt sorceresses out there! The best skills are generally at the latter parts of the skill tree. In diablo 3, spell damages are based on the weapons and therefore its like having all level 30 skills, just unlocking at different increments, and are all viable based on the items you’re carrying. Diablo 2 has the illusion of choice in which over 99% of them are “wrong” choices. I mean you could put 4 points in every skill you have and you won’t make it far into nightmare, or even beat normal I’m not sure (experiment anyone?). The reality is, each class only has a handful of viable skills that work in hell. That was the flaw with diablo 2 and is simply the truth. Because of the nature of stat point allocations and skill point allocations, its near impossible for me to figure out the best formula to figure out total combinations.
Conclusion
But let me conclude that its not the number of combinations (in which diablo 3 still has more) but the viability and playability of those combinations. Blizzard has definitely without a doubt, succeeded in marking each class have at least 22 viable skills that can be used in any difficulty level. Why? Because it’s based mostly on your items stats. Now multiply that by rune effects and passive skills and all the sudden the truth is pretty evident… is that you can have 100 players playing and creating characters on battlenet and every single one of them will do something completely different. You still don't believe the math!! Well let me tell you this... if only .0005% of the Barbarian’s D3 skill combinations are viable, we still have 3,870 combinations that are worth experimenting with. Because there are no “bad” spells or “wrong” choices. The players that will be rewarded will be the ones that can masterfully apply their skills in the right situations and play for the long haul to acquire the equipment that supports their build. Now the difference here is that no one is “locked” in a build because anyone can switch to another build by simply clicking onto different skills. However on the flip side of things, by the time we get to hell difficulty in Diablo 3, our gear, more than anything will define our build. But that’s a different story. Hope this clarifies what Blizzard is saying. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
