posted a message on Blizzard's Next MMO Will Have "Broader Appeal".
    Quote from "mockery" »
Gamespot has just posted an article about Blizzard's next MMO and how Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick says it will have a broader appeal than their previous titles. Here's what was said in the article:

So for those of you who were hoping for a World of Diablo / World of Starcraft type game, I wouldn't really count on it. I don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't mind seeing Blizzard coming out with a new IP. Either that or World of Lost Vikings. ;)
We've known for a long, long time with absolute certainty that it was a new IP. They've been saying it for a while.

The news here is the 'broader appeal.' A lot of us were hoping that since they don't want to cannibalize WoW subscribers, that perhaps it would be a more intricate, serious, progressive game. Not so, apparently. It will be even worse than WoW. Awesome, huh?

Nor in mine, as it is now, but I thought....

You know, never mind, I'll reread in the morning.

No kidding. Their philosophy is: aim the gameplay at little Bobby, aim the graphics at his grandma's computer.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

EDIT: What in the world is this? The date stamp on my post is 'Today, 12:04 AM' while all the posts above were apparently posted afterward, from 12:55 AM to 03:24 AM. Surreal.

Maybe my head cold is making me slower than usual, but I'm confused. He begins by dismissing the people who wanted a darker style as idiots, but by the end he is giving the highest of high praise to the darker direction it has taken, as we desired. What?

posted a message on Belial Confirmed and Still One More Class!
I hear you on the barbarian. I'm all about finesse and dignity in warriors. To Hell with 'Hulk smash!'

And I know that testosterone enables men to build muscle more easily, but I don't know what medical evidence there is on women being 'more agile' (or how agility helps with archery, for that matter, as it's just arm strength and eyesight). They have more flexible legs, yes, thanks to the wider pelvis. But the rest of their musculature and their reflexes are the same as a similarly built male. Unless you cite Robert A. Heinlein as your source. :P

Of course, it's common today--and has been throughout much of European history--that men are fatter than women, and that certainly makes women more agile on average, but that's a culturally reinforced difference, not a genetic one. Genes actually dictate that we burn fat more easily, but there's little social pressure on us to do so compared to women.

    Anyway, what a derailing! Sorry.

A "concept" class based on what we've seen? ^_^
    Let's see what's left:

    • Witch
    • Healer
    • Innkeeper
    • Maid
    • Blacksmith
    • Rogue=Thief
    • Merchant
    • Sage
    • Caravaner
    • Drunk
    • Guard
    • Shaman
    • Prince
    • Alchemist
    • Shipmaster
    • Mercenary
    • Sorceror=Mage=Vizjerei
    • Assassin
    • Horadrim
    • Angel
    • Amazon
    • Warrior
    • Archer=Bowyer (different from Rogue)
    • Priest
    • Archbishop
    • Necromancer
    • Druid
    • Townsperson
    • Master at Arms
    • Warlock
    • Paladin=Cleric
    • Bard
    • Cow

Alchemist: Maybe I just read too much Terry Brooks as a kid, but this seems very viable. The playstyle would, of course, be very much like the assassin.

Priest: We've only ever had one 'holy' character, in the form of the paladin, though we encountered the corrupted forms of his robed fellows, the Priests of Zakarum. It would be nice to lay down the Holy Law once again, in a more direct form.

Bard: The Diablo series' first finesse melee fighter, I thought the bard was quite a compelling class that was a shame to leave out of Hellfire. Looking at this thread, it's the sort of thing that people seem to want, anyway.

    • Rogue
    • Assassin
    • Bard
Hey, look ! They're all previous classes !
The Bard would be even less of a 'previous class' than the Monk, since it was never even officially added to Hellfire and could only be activated by editing the command.txt file.

Actually... what if we could make skills for the last class gender specific? A male "rogue" would deal with swords and a female "rogue" would use bows...
    What? Why?

If you're going with the very sketchy 'males are stronger than females' angle, then they'd also make better archers. Not to mention that females have those troublesome obstacles on their chests--they'd be better with blades than bows for that reason.

There are too many problems down the road of sexually dimorphic game mechanics. Better to keep gender an aesthetic difference only.

Also: nice to meet you, Kyle. I'm Kyle.

posted a message on New Diablo 3 Character Class: The Monk!
I'm glad to see the monk back from Hellfire and all, but moreover: the visuals are considerably less WarCraftesque and more appropriately atmospheric in this area, for me, and I usually despise deserts.

It would be weird to name an expansion after something that happened 10,000 years ago in the WarCraft lore, and I think such a common word is weak evidence, but very well....

The concept artwork is superb. Perfect, even.

Yet the models are downright Disney.

One wonders if the concept artists and 3D artists communicate.

posted a message on Do Aliens exist?
About 100 billion stars in the Milky Way, most (if not all) of them with planets. At least 80 billion galaxies in the universe, probably at least 125 judging by what Hubble has seen, but let's take the 80 billion. Some galaxies are, of course, much larger than the Milky Way, and some much smaller, but if we (very conservatively) predict 80 billion galaxies at an average of 100 billion stars per galaxy and four planets per star, that's still 32 quadrillion planets.

    Life elsewhere seems very probable.

However, that even one cell of it is so much as aware of our existence seems very improbable, given the unfathomably vast distances I'd rather not get into, since I'm typing with only my left hand, thanks to injury.

Anyway, it's very important to distinguish between the two. I fear UFO enthusiasts are typically a little confused between probability of existence and probability of contact. Not to mention how to logically seek evidence rather than constantly fabricating it.

If we ever do make contact, it is going to be the most tragic example of the consequences of 'crying wolf' ever.

Essentially the only reason I'm interested in this is that I'm stumped as to what Blizzard would do outside of their already established IPs. They've been locked into them for so long that it is utterly alien to me. I like alien.

That is the most hilariously redundant script I've ever seen. Someone was obviously told, 'I need to you find the longest possible way to script this little gem to glow when clicked.'

    'But why?'

'Trust me. Just pretend you're the worst Flash coder ever.'

And so they did. They deserve a medal.
