Granted I'm an American citizen (which I am not), here are my 2 cents.

I wouldn't vote for either in support and I won't vote for one to spite the other. I'll never vote for someone whom I disagree with almost entirely just because I disagree with the other guy more. I doubt the day will ever come that I can vote for someone I both like and who stands a reasonable chance of winning. Before that could ever happen, the majority of people would not only have to change their fundamental ideals about what government should and shouldn't do for them, but also about what they should do for themselves and each other. It's easier for someone to pick the clique they disagree with the least and ride that bandwagon to their own demise than it is for them to think for themselves. The desire, however subconscious it may be, to become a part of something larger than yourself is universal. The same basic things that divide people politically also divide them economically and religiously. Namely, fear and comfort. People sacrifice knowledge for comfort and freedom for security, all along not realizing that the road they've so willfully taken is the same road they fought to avoid; and thus the cycle continues and public opinion changes ever so slightly from one dogmatic ideology to the next as history is forgotten and only nostalgia remains. I have no reasonable expectation for that to change anytime soon.

Its because they think they are their fucking khakis.

Hey all, its been a while since I've posted here. I'm surprised this thread is still alive and well, I argued for the first... say, 10 pages, then got bored. Unfortunately, neither candidate really is amazing, and it leaves me to drift to the political philosophies instead of the candidate.

I'd like to say though, that Obama is simple hype, great oratory, but nothing really more.

Let's discuss this masterpiece. I ask that you make sure to clearly differentiate the book from the movie in your posts. Observations on the (social) commentary are preferred over best-movie-evar-esque posts.

To Ivaron: I didn't mean to come off as replying to you, so much as supporting your statement with my own. Khakis are a type of shorts/apparel, it is a quote from Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club, which I highly recommend.

To CrazyMasterT: I meant to convey that the patriot act is an offset of war, but it is not directly within the realm of war in the sense of this topic as I understand it so far.

I personally wouldn't use the patriot act point as a primary argument, because it is an offset of all that hub-bub, not war.

I haven't had a reason to post on these forums in a long time, thank you for the opportunity.

Things get progressively more complex as time goes on through out history. While it can be argued that wars involve social control, war is not a definitive result of the desire for social control. Social control can easily be accomplished on some people without ever raising a fist. Look, for example, at fashion. I'm unsure of your vision of "control" in this instance, as no single variable in our reality will ever dominate every human.

While going over the points you stated to support your opinion in the first post, there are too many flexible arguments. See, the government doesn't make things sound worse than they are, the media does. The media is not owned by the government, although at times it can be influenced by it. War does not in itself make people join the army either (I recommend rephrasing that if you intend to use that in your paper).

The biggest flaw you have here is that you are trying to define war to an extent, and give it a spectrum of reason. War is hell, and don't forget it. Hell, whatever your definition, is beyond us.

I alienated the veteran side of me when I wrote this, so don't think I'm spewing any sort of bias.

Ya, like senators and possibly the next president. Probably more along the lines of generals for me though.

I was offered a 30-day stateside deployment opportunity this winter to go protect convoys during the presidential inauguration, but it would have taken a bite out of school. A big one. Upon discussion, it seemed... unrealistic.

Like the title says, say it guys.

Alright. So, I'm not thinking this will carry on much farther... although it is very interesting. Does this remind anyone here of the original Ghost Recon game, from Tom Clancy and Red Storm? I think I'll go play it now.

I'm from the USA, in the state of Massachusetts, in the town of Westfield, which is near the city of Springfield and opposite from Boston.

I plan to move to the state of Alaska.

The government? The government... a load of crap. If I could live by myself and a few close friends - a small community - I would. We should be able to be responsible over ourselves, and our families, without interference.

Don't get me wrong, I understand it all much better than that, but the situation I jotted down would suit me just fine. My escape is to take a backpack, and enter the wilderness for a week or 3.
