Personally, I think the option to respec would be cool, as long as it was quest based, or conditional, like some of the act V quests in d2.
So if you wanted to get a respec, you needed to do the quest, so in your entire career with that character, you had 3 chances to get it down.
If it was say, a gold fee that scaled up, that would work if the game made gold either scarce or important, and I REALLY don't want to see that happen.
Think of how annoying it would have been in D2 if you were dueling, you killed a hammerdin, and suddenly he comes back out with pure FoH skills and destroys you, it would be back and forth respeccing madness!

4 times in my relatively short career working for other people I've been asked if my "business" would like to "share in interactive customer" hosting "opportunities" as diablo 2 server sharing.

Diablo 2 supported people smart enough to build strong characters and game the system, not whine asses who wanted to hold hands through single player for 3 days and then quit.
The hardcore gamers are the ones who buy 2, or 5 accounts, the ones who keep the servers alive, the ones who buy multiple accounts of the game, the ones who stay long enough to keep advertisements alive (half the reason battlenet is still around noobs), etc, etc.
