I think we're all wasting a lot of finger-energy not heeding the advice found in Maka's signature. :)

Yeah, let's all get super srs bzns about end-game skills because any of us have been able to play end game.

In other news, telling someone he's talking out of his ass, using the word 'retarded', and failing to apparently grasp 3rd-grade grammar = super constructive ways to theorycraft in an intelligent way. Thanks for the contribution of that post. Bud.

posted a message on [PvP] Blizzard neglecting a major part of what made Diablo, Diablo.
I don't understand the logic that being transparent means developing slower. You'd rather they stay silent and we have no idea what they're doing? It's actually brilliant of them, one because it shows they care about keeping their fans informed and second it fills a vacuum of long development silence where they know the fans would be going crazy, .e.g. OMFG D3 NEVER COMING VAPORWARE ACTIVISION PONIES !?!!?

You're right they've had a long dev cycle and have used it to iterate many systems many times. That's a Good Thing(TM). That means if something didn't work they didn't have to say 'Oh well, we have to ship, just put it out there.' They got to say, 'Well, it doesn't work. We're not putting out a crummy system.'

I don't get why that's a bad thing. We all want D3 sooner and with More Stuff. But I'd rather have less stuff than crummy stuff. I'm glad the D3 team has the luxury of being able to throw away bad systems instead of having to stick with them. I wish smaller indie clubs had that same luxury. Blizzard was a small company once too. They've been massively successful and now get to do things the way they want. We as fans are lucky for that and I think some of us aren't glad enough for it. PvM is the core of Diablo, it always has been. There's a very small (though passionate) minority of PvPers that see it differently, but that's what it is. the PvM aspect is finally good enough to release, so they're releasing it without delaying it for what is ostensibly a minor mechanic for a minority of the players.

You use the word 'hubris' yet hubris would be them arrogantly saying to themselves 'Well we have a crummy little PvP system, let's just give it to them, they'll be glad for anything and will shut up.' No, they're taking more time so even a minority-satisfying mechanic will be up their standards.

If they wanted to languor in hubris and rest on their laurels they'd have shipped D3 2 years ago and we'd have a shitty game right now. The kind of language being bandied about here is just foolish.

They're inept for not including something they don't feel is good enough to put their name on and isn't something the vast majority of D3 players don't care about? Again, I really do get your personal frustration, but drawing a larger parallel of that to Blizzard's decision-making seems...I don't know. Overreaching? Dramatic?

To say you'd rather have a really crummy PvP system at launch seems silly to me. To say they could have had a good PvP system in place with no cost to the development of the PvM system most players care about seems to require making a really big assumption on the workings of the dev team that I don't think anyone outside of that team reasonably has.

Yeah...obviously there are many players that enjoyed PvP and griefing in D2 quite a lot, so it was major -to them-, but judging by my general personal grasp of the zeitgeist from hanging around the Diablo community for 10 years and...oh yeah, every single poll on every fansite that has asked, it is absolutely not even close to a major part of the game for the overwhelming majority of the fanbase. Railing on Blizzard for acting accordingly is to ignore the facts. You've every right to be frustrated because it's a big deal to you, but there's a failure here to understand how in the minority you are. Blizzard isn't making a mistake here. They're still a business, and they're working to satisfy the much larger portion of the playerbase that couldn't care less about PvP.

PvP also isn't shelved. It's coming.

The books are basically glorified fanfics. They're not awful but not great as literature. If you want Diablo stuff, read them.

This has been a big question for a while -- I did a big detailed writeup on MoS a couple years ago on this forum and threw out a couple theories; it seemed to be implied it was Tyrael but that doesn't hold much water from what we sort-of know these days. It definitely seems to be an angel that sympathizes with / helps humans, which is why Tyrael always seemed likely.

My personal speculation is that it's Auriel.

I'm still not sure Haunt functions really well. The spreading is its core mechanic / what makes it compelling but 15 seconds is an eternity in Diablo, I'm not sure I've ever seen it spread more than once or twice a game, stuff dies too fast.

Yes. But you kill stuff faster / find champs for the end-game buff faster if you spread out a bit / etc. so in the end assuming others in your group are contributing at least modestly to MF% you're better off grouping.

Hmm, neat little write-up connecting it to the lore side of things but I don't think they're really envisioning it as anything other than an endgame mechanic. The rare people of Sanctuary tapping into the long-lost inner power has been going on for a while, it's always been the loose explanation for who the powerful player-characters are.

Definitely fun to try and tie it in though. :) I just don't think it's really intended to stretch outside of pure gameplay mechanics.

Hmm, that's a good point. If you're up like 3-4 buff stacks and you die, why wouldn't you just quit that game? There definitely needs to be a way to gain at least some of that back or there's no incentive (this is probably why they're still tweaking this idea).

Edit: Yeah, like others I think maybe losing one instance of the buff per death is an elegant way to handle this. Someone fax Blizzard. :)

I agree it must wipe on death, in fact it's a perfect way to build in at least some kind of decent death penalty outside of HC, which will make end game more challenging.

The stacking will need some experimenting of course. I don't think it's going to get as exponential as jaclashflash thinks, gear will obviously affect how fast you can kill a pack but at endgame it's going to be a challenge no matter what. I think a max 3-4 'charges' of the buff walks the line between too few and too many, i.e. too casual / too hardcore. What's nice is if you only have a little while to play you can always just run around and grab 1-2 kills for a bit of a buff then to kill Diablo or whatever, and when you have more time = more kills = more buff. It lets casuals enjoy the mechanic while still rewarding players who invest more time.

Not sure how much I liked a timed aspect, because I don't personally that sense of rushing against the clock.

And yeah, of course it promotes group play -- the devs have said since day 1 that first and foremost the game is designed to be played co-op. I'm down with that.

All in all I really think it's a great system and a brilliant way to promote varied gameplay without fundamentally changing the way the game is designed. I'm really excited to check it out. I do wish it kicked in a bit earlier, but I understand it's for the endgame. I don't think anyone had a blast running Baal 20 times a day as an endgame.

I will never understand why people start their own personal post instead of adding it to the two other threads, each at three pages.

I don't understand why people post just to say stuff like this. If you're not a mod, you don't need to post all. If you think it violates a forum rule please just report it and let a Mod make a call / combine threads / etc.

Very cool way to promote more interesting gameplay I think. Sorta wish it kicked in earlier but I get that it's an end-game mechanic.
