I think Diablo 3 looks great overall, and even if it were released in it's current direction it will be a great game. I would argue that much of the negativity here is too strong.

However, threads like this annoy me more. What is the point of this thread? At least the critics of Diablo 3 are defending what they like and enjoy. This thread simply piles negativity on top of negativity for no good reason. It's absurd.

Why attack someone because they love something? Why attack someone because they want to see Diablo 3 be everything they would hope for? Because 4chan teaches you to be a little fucker who gets his jollies mocking people?

There is nothing wrong with fighting for what we want so long as we're fighting for something good. If what they truly want is good, the Diablo 3 critics could stand to be more positive in the way they're expressing their desires (and not just flaming what they don't like), but even the worst posts have been positive about something.

What is the positive thing a thread like this could be fighting for? Does it want to silence the debates and discussions of what people like? I don't see that as a good thing.

I'm not even trying to say I'm a professional texture artist, but if you would pay close attention to the original stone textures, you'd see they're the same exact cartoony style that's used in World of Warcraft. Diablo has always been about gritty and dirty textures, this is as bad as taking away the regular inventory system. What next, they're making the characters automatically attack monsters like in WoW? Honestly, how much Diablo do you think there will be left when the game is finished?

I appreciate what you were trying to show. The flat, painted look to many of the bitmaps in Diablo 3 gives little sense of visual weight.

The problem is how rough your version looks overall. The original has a soft glow to the overall image that is pretty sweet and you destroyed that when you added your texture.

The new interview with rob pardo pretty much states that they won't disappoint us :) I believe them also, so let's all calm down :)

The link is http://youtube.com/watch?v=BB-nVF2UcdE - very leet interview

It's kind of sad that everyone is attacking the colors so heavily. While the saturation could stand to be toned down slightly (say with the green glow in particular), a lack of color won't bring realism or horror to the game.

With Diablo 2 I actually alter the gamma setting to intentionally make the game look darker than intended. It kind of sucks since I don't get to see the game as it truly is, but the brightness of the game looks so bad to me that it's worth it. I see the current problem with Diablo 3 being the exact same thing. The lighting is too bright (in certain areas) and the lack of a distinct light radius really sucks. I bet people would love the colors if these problems were fixed.

    THIS IS IMPORTANT:
    - The return of the light radius / shadow system from Diablo 1 and 2, a concept modified picture made by me roughly shows and suggests how the shadow system should work on Diablo 3: http://i31.tinypic.com/2zta5o7.jpg

Again, looking over this thread, I think the light radius and designing a complex behavior to the lighting system is the biggest concern. How Blizzard could have overlooked something so important to a Diablo game when designing the 3D engine is strange to me.

While the extreme removal terrain color isn't an improvement to me (I would have gone with a much more subtle de-saturation), the way you did the lighting is much closer to what I'd want:

    C) to remove giant shoulder pads from the game altogether. They're unrealistic and would serve no purpose in real life combat.

lol, I like the signature picture in your post. Some of the stylism (like jumbo shoulder pads) put into the characters is definitely a bit goofy looking. That said, however, some of the models, like Cain, look great despite some stylistic elements.

I was a huge fan of the original Diablo and I was rather disappointed when Diablo 2 moved away from the horrorific focus of the original game. That said, Diablo 2 was still very fun with it's new, more epic focus, so I got over it.

The graphics of this new game are gorgeous so I voted positive. The screen alterations some people have been making here are horrendous. Would I like the game to be more neutral? Would I like it to be less colorful? Yeah, but not to that extreme degree.

My problem is the lighting and not the colors or the style. A Diablo game should be very dark outside of the player's light radius and I don't get that feel at all in these new screenshots. This has a big effect on Diablo's actual gameplay (whether of an epic or horror style).
