posted a message on Coolest D2 spells
Some spells are just really, really fun to use. Which spells in Diablo2 and D1 made you say "that was fuckin cool.." What do you think are the coolest spells?

My top 3 coolest spells ever are:

    1) Frozen orb
    2) Multi shot (nothing feels better than sending a sea of arrows upon a herd of cows)
    3) Werewolf + Maul (the first time I played a Druid, I just thought the coolest shit ever)

posted a message on Diablo 1 help please
I am playing Diablo 1 single player with a Sorcerer. I read somewhere that I should have found a book of mana shield early on in the game (in the Catacombs) but I am already in hell and have not found it yet. Any tips on where to find it?

Okay here is the screen shot. This really is a screenie just after I died in town. Unfortunately the screwed up screen shot is pretty useless, but you can make out the outline of cain, and my dead character lying next to him can also sort of be distinguished.

The Skeleton King quest didn't appear in my single player game. I searched all over level 3 (and 4 just to make sure) and his lair does not appear in my game.

I spoke to the tavern owner who gives the quest, but he didn't give it. But on my last character I didn't have to talk to anyone to get that quest. Is there any way to still get to fight the Skeleton King?

I had cain identify a helm for me, then when I put it on my rogue suddenly died. Right beside Cain. I had just finished killing some pretty hard monsters too. What a downer... I have never all of a sudden died after equiping an item, especiialy in town! Is this a common glitch?

This whole "Cooperative Gameplay" excuse for removing PK is BS. As long as there is a common objective for all players, cooperation will flourish in countless different forms. In D2, there are always groups leveling and questing together. PK can be cooperative also... people can band together to fend off a PKer and PKers can strategize their hunt together.
So it's not about cooperative gameplay, it's about what these new developers find fun in a game. And I personally think they have the wrong idea about what made D2 so fun. After all, they admitedly never were addicted to D2, so how would they know? I have been PK'd and I didn't find it fun at all. But I would never want to be forced to have to cooperate with players that I don't want to cooperate with. If someone in my group is being an asshole, I want to be able to kill them. Not just leave the game or get into a war of words with them. And if someone PK's me, I accept it and move on. It's part of the fun of a multiplayer game. It's a fair exhange for playing a realistic game (as far as player interaction goes).

WoW - you can't trade with other players, you have to consent to duels, you are split up into hundreds of little servers etc... The content of the game is tremendous and there are countless hours of fun lying within the quests and raids. But Diablo's multiplayer has always been largely about realistic player interaction. D3 is going to be roughly the same size as D2, so don't expect the questing to keep you entertained forever like in WoW. Many people who have played both WoW AND D2 say that D2 was more exciting only because of the player interaction. The animosity and competative fire fueled by a single NK is priceless. The room allowed for griefing in Diablo was not specifiaclly added so that people would grief, but rather the griefers were a result of the limitless player interaction.

When a human being is born, they are not taught to treat people with disrespect (well.. depending on what country you are born in). But imagine if at birth your mouth was removed so that you couldn't mouth off to people... is that a solution for achieving a cooperative population? In the context of Diablo, removing the unconsentual hostile button is much the same. We lose out on all the good things that the no-holds-bar PvP brought, just to keep people from using it in a way that some players don't like. Personally, without griefers I would have gotten bored with D2 many years ago. Not because I like people treating me like crap, but because a system in which people are free to interact however they want is what made the game so fun for me.

Removing the game mechanics that make the game realistic (and don't start giving me this "realism in a fantasy game WtF?? bullshit because I am referring to realism in terms of freedoms of interaction between players) just to please a crowd that wants a squeeky-clean, friendly(forced) multiplayer experience, is just plain STUPID.

And how would pvp in D3 relate to the actual storyline?

The original post talks about having a dueling arena in Ureh for the heros to battle to the death. I'm saying that would make no sense for the storyline.

How do you know how much more development the game needs? Honestly you have no way of knowing how much of the game they have done just from viewing the trailer.

Erm... but you think the heroes killing each other for amusement somehow makes more sense?

Heroes that wish above all else to save Sanctuary?

But the PvP in D2 did not have anything to do with the actual story line. That's the difference.

I personally hated the forced hostlities in the moment but in the long run they gave the game spunk to me.

You are not the only one that feels that way. I have been saying for a long time now that there are unpleasant aspects of the game that contributed to it's longevity. Nobody likes seeing their character die... it is indeed unfun. But how fun would the game be without the risk of dying? People often don't realize why Blizzard intentionally added so many contraversial features such as PK. They knew what they were doing and that's why 8 years later there are still so many people playing D2.

It would not make much sense for the citizens of a desperate society, under attack by the forces of hell, with a sense of dread and gloom wherever you look, to be pitting their heros against eachother in a display gory entertainment. Ancient Rome was a prosperous state, and the sense of security amongst the people allowed them to focus their attention to entertainment and look down upon strong warriors, seeing them as nothing but slaves to feed their bloodlust.

I think that having a dueling arena in D3 would contrast the storyline too much, and I really think that the developers will not put that in.

    6) Please bring some aspects of PK-ing back. I'm not talking about "PKing by choice." PKing by choice is not much fun because only well prepared characters will both agree. PKing is only fun if you're kicking someone elses ass, or exhilirating and memorable if someone is kicking YOUR ass. Of course, you will never voluntarily let them. What you need to have is gaming areas that have better loot probability but where PKing is allowed. This allows bold adventurers to venture into the risky area....at the increased RISK of having their head chopped off and their body looted to smitherenes. Make it a difficicult area so you cant just go in there with newb armor and be risk-free. You should have to risk what you wear being stolen to go there. This would be so much fun.

    Thanks for listening

Considering Blizzard is pussying out on the whole PK aspect that made the game great, I wouldn't expect to see this in D3.

I made a fairly long post a while back discussing why PKing should be kept in the game. If both characters have to agree to the "PK" it really takes all the fun out of it (unless your goal is a friendly duel, which can be accomplished regardless of the existance of PK). I want to be able to kill someone who is being a douche bag, without having them agree to the ass-wooping before hand. Also, it's pretty unrewarding to pour so much effort into making a strong HC character who never gets tossed into a dangerous PvP situation (b/c if you have the choice to be invulnerable to player attacks, chances are you will never actually have a logical reason for dueling anyone who is the least bit powerful). I don't think that people should be able to choose who can attack them in a multiplayer game unless its a specially organized tournament with its own rules. Although I don't think high level players should be able to hostile much lower level players (but low level players should still be able to hostile high levels).
