Wow, you live pretty close eh?

Tell me, do you grow tired of all other amusement parks once you've been to Cedar Point?

There's an amusement park near where I live called Holiday World. There's only 3 roller coasters there, but I still consider it to be one of the best amusement parks in the world. It only costs like $30 to get in, all the rides are free, all soft drinks are free, free sun screen, it's very clean, and their water park is one of the coolest water parks I've ever seen. If you're ever near southern Indiana you HAVE to go there. I'm never going to Six Flags ever again.

watching too many movies there...the worst that can happen is that they rip you off on some dumb souvenir or something.

That's definitely not the worst that can happen. US Dollars are extremely valuable in places like Jamaica. Americans are major targets for thieves in a lot of vacation spots. Also, American women are considered exotic and are targets for rape. I'd fear for my fiancee.

the only problem with the drake equation is that you can throw whatever data you want into it... but with realistic data compiled by nasa they figured it to be 2.31 more advanced civilizations in our galaxy... this is pretty good estimate seeing as how our galaxy alone is 10,000 light years thick and 300,000 light years wide...

Good analysis gamma. However, I doubt that formula is able to take into account some of the unusual circumstances we've found ourselves in on Earth. For example, we have an unusually gigantic moon which helps pull asteroids away from Earth. Some scientists theorize that our large moon is the only reason we've survived long enough to advance as far as we have.

I really don't know if those kinds of considerations are accounted for in this formula, but here's my general mode of thought on the subject. I'm almost positive we're going to discover life on other planets. The sheer numbers are staggeringly in favor of it. Basically all you need is an rocky planet that's the correct distance away from it's star to have liquid water. Scientists already know that we're going to find countless planets that meet these specifications, nearly any of which could harbor life, albeit this life would most likely be types of algae and bacteria.

The challenge isn't going to be finding a planet with life, it's going to be finding another planet with life of intelligence comparable to ours. However, if you think about it... we're not gonna find them, they're gonna find us. If we find life, it will be burgeoning life that probably can't communicate. The life with superior intelligence will also be searching, much like we will, and they'll probably contact us before we even know they're there, simply because they're more advanced than we are.

Our existence has been in the blink of an eye, so the intelligent life out there is likely to have existed far longer than we have, because the odds of them evolving at the same time as us are astronomically small (pun intended :P). With this in mind, they probably have the technology to search the universe and locate us with ease. If they exist, they've probably been watching us for a long time now. Some would argue that the fact that they haven't contacted us should be proof enough that this advanced life doesn't exist, but maybe they're just waiting for the right time to say hi...

I've actually never been outside the USA. In one of my classes the professor asked us to raise our hands if we'd traveled abroad, I was almost the only person who hadn't. I know pretty much everyone speaks English now, but I still find the idea of being that far away from home a bit scary. Plus I'm always hearing stories of Americans being huge targets of abductions in other countries. I guess all those horror movies don't help ;)

Greetings from Destin, Florida, where the sun is shining, the sand is white, and the ocean's cool and refreshing...

I left my hometown of Evansville, Indiana just before a huge storm hit. The storm unloaded about 3 inches of rain in about an hour and we heard reports of parking lots with flooding up to car windows... We left just in time!

We arrived last night and I've already been swimming in the ocean and in the pool on our building's roof, I played with my 17 month-old niece in the sand, I've been reading the Sin War trilogy, I've been playing my 360, and played Diablo 2. Throughout the week we're going to eat at some nice restaurants, race go-karts, drive bumper boats, play golf, go shopping, and whatever else I wanna do :)

So, where do you like to go on vacation, and what to you like to do when you're there?

Spanking is one thing, hitting your son hard enough to give him a concussion is another. Don't accuse yourself of anything here, if your family gets separated momentarily it's not your fault, it's your dad's. You're not the one who's a danger to the ones he loves, your dad is. He needs serious help for the sake of you and your family. Who knows how many of your other family members have been injured due to his rage and were too afraid to do something about it? Your sister seems to hate the man, maybe he's taken his anger out physically on her too?

Look up local "social services" either online or in your phone book. These are people who's sole job is to talk to families in trouble and help them sort it out. You can tell them your story and if they feel like something needs to be done they can do anything from arranging family therapy sessions to an arrest. I'm not saying anyone's going to arrest your dad, but they hear about these situations all day and they know exactly what steps are necessary. If you're confused about what to do, they'll tell you exactly what to do.

How are you labeling stuff as Prog/Shred/Metal/Goth and whatnot ? Since when is Prog not Metal. If you meant Prog rock, then I don't know many, if any, bands who go Prog, then Metal, then Gothic Rock (I'm losing you readers here, because the post I'm replying to is too obscure to handle). I take it you're talking about Gothic Rock maybe? Again, doesn't fit.

    /the end
Don't get so upset over this. Music genres cross so many borders with each other that it's often impossible to label bands and songs. Dream Theater is the perfect example because they dip into so many different genres it's hard to count.

Speaking of Dream Theater, to the OP who keeps raving about Herman Li... the guy can't perform live at all. He can play a hell of a lot faster than I ever will, but why write songs that you can only play correctly in studio conditions after hundreds of takes? John Petrucci from Dream Theater can play just as fast as Herman Li, but he doesn't f**k up every time they play live. In fact, Dream Theater oftentimes sound better live than in the studio. I think a person's live performance is the best way to say how good they are.

Don't get me wrong, Dragonforce has a lot of really cool songs, but if I had to watch them live I'd shove pencils in my ears first so I wouldn't have to feel so bad for Herman Li.

posted a message on [Books] I need ideas for books to read!
Really? Nobody's mentioned the Dragonlance books yet? Okay man, go out tonight and buy the Dragonlance Chronicles series. There's like 100 Dragonlance spin-offs (literally) because the series is so amazing (not to mention hundreds of thousands of fan fictions), and it pretty much all started with Dragonlance Chronicles. After you read those, pick up and read anything in the Dragonlance series by both Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (they wrote Chronicles). The Legends series is good, the War of Souls series is good... Also, any Dragonlance book by Richard A. Knaak is pretty good too. He's the guy who wrote most of the Diablo books including the Sin War series. you're gonna have amazing books to read for a long time once you start with Dragonlance.

Oh, and don't forget to read the Diablo books before Diablo 3 comes out. I just started reading them, but they're awesome :)

I'm guessing $50 for the normal version and $60 or $70 for the collector's edition, just depending on how many goodies they pack into the collector's edition.

Pretty much all PC games are $50, they'd get a LOT of flak if they went up to $60. Just because it's a good game doesn't mean it's gonna cost more than the average game ;)

    sigh..........
Blizzard said they're going to try to release 1 major title per year. This year is gonna be Starcaft 2 (probably) and next year everyone is guessing it will be Diablo 3. I imagine both games will come out late in their respective years, such as late November. They can't pass up the opportunity to release the games in time for Christmas ;)

    Bashiok doesn't post on DiabloFans.

There's already quite a bit of discussion over the 1.13 patch already. They've been pretty strict about keeping 1.13 discussion on this thread.

That being said, Blizzard hasn't said ANYTHING about the 1.13 patch, although I would guess that they're gonna give bowazons some lovin'.

Anyways, I'll be spending pretty much all day Aug 21 and 22 on these forums waiting for links to videos and news articles :)
