    Barbarian Budget Guide
For those of you who would like to play some Uber bosses but do not have the gold to buy the uber gear, tryhardenmity has created a guide on how to maximize the limited gold you do have. For 3 million gold, the guide covers what stats and gear to dump your gold on to make it through most of Inferno with a Barbarian. You can check out his original thread for additional comments and suggestions.

More on the Possible Damage Bug
We reported the other day that some users thought there might have been a bug that increased the damage done by monsters. Blizzard checked these reports and have confirmed that there was no bug increasing the damage. However, some people still remain skeptical.

Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

We're not calling anyone delusional or wrong for reporting a different experience; we're simply saying that the scaling bonus to monster damage at each level MP is (according to all the data we have) where it's supposed to be, and that it hasn't changed since Tuesday.

That said, even though there's no evidence of a bug at this time, we're continuing to monitor reports and feedback over the weekend and will investigate further if necessary.

    Most Treasured Item
A user on the Battle.net forums asked what people's most treasured items that they have obtained was. Grimiku, from Blizzard, has shared his and we would like for you to share yours.

    Barbarian 1.0.5 Video Guide
tryhardenmity is back with his video guides. Starting us off with the 1.0.5 patch, he has covered the Barbarian. Discussing the changes made to the class, he covers two different specs as well as gearing. You can check out his original thread for comments and feedback.

    Xah'rith's Difficulty
Some players have voiced concern that Xah'rith, the key warden in Act III, is too difficult between his freezing corpse rain and illusionist abilities. However, Blizzard has stated that his difficulty was set intentionally and may tone him down if most players are finding him too difficult.

Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

It's not a bug, but we're definitely paying close attention to player feedback about Xah'rith's current difficulty -- not just in Inferno, but in all difficulty levels, and at all MP levels too.

We agree that he may be a little bit too challenging at the moment, and are discussing the possibility of either reducing his outgoing damage, tweaking what affixes he spawns with, or moving his spawn location (right now, he's kind of hard to avoid if you're just questing normally). We'd like to hear more from the community on the topic first, though, before we make any decisions.

In the end, we want the keywardens to provide a fun challenge for players, and be a little more difficult than the surrounding wildlife (i.e. a fight you have to put some thought into), but we don't want that to happen at the expense of being able to progress through an Act.

    Drop Rates
It has been said before but Blizzard once again confirms that there has been no unannounced changes to drop rates from the 1.0.5 patch. They also reconfirmed that any monster level above zero will result in all monsters in inferno able to drop items level 61 - 63.

Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    - We haven't made any changes to drop rates or drop quality.
    - They are same as they were yesterday, when the patch went live.
    - We implemented some hotfixes this morning, but they weren't related to items at all.
    - Those changes can be found here.

In all likelihood, you're just experiencing normal RNG. If, however, you feel like something may be bugged, go ahead and drop a line in the Bug Report forum so we can investigate. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

did they change the drop rates to be the same for every act yet? was just wondering didn't see it in the patch notes.
    I think this will answer your question;
In Inferno at Monster Power 1 or greater, monsters in every Act will also be bumped up to level 63 and share the same high-end item drop rates. This means that no matter which act you're progressing through, the monsters in that act will all have the same shot at dropping items level 61-63, including crafting recipes, Legendary items, and set items.

Curse recently interviewed Rob Pardo, Blizzard's Chief Creative Officer, at the Mists of Pandaria launch. While most of the interview is about World of Warcraft, Pardo did answer a few questions about Diablo.

Originally Posted by (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Diablo 3 sold very well but received mixed reception at release because of various problems. Blizzard worked really hard and greatly improved the game over the last few months but do you feel that the launch was rushed? Would you hold it a few more months if you had to do it again?
The tricky thing about the Diablo 3 launch was the new codebase. Diablo 3 was a whole new engine and Battle.net had just done a new major revision. It is very hard with the way that we launch games with millions and millions of players to test it. We had hundreds of thousands of players in the open beta without a lot of problems, but when we launched the game we had ten or twenty times that amount of players. Lots of things show up with that many players that don't show up with one tenth of them. I'm not sure holding it back would have uncovered a lot of those things. If you think back to World of Warcraft it was very similar. It was a whole new engine and battle.net platform, so it took us a while to plug all of the leaks and get the game completely stable.

Now that we're a few months away from the release of Diablo 3, can you tell us how the real money auction house worked out for Blizzard? Are you happy with the feature and how it was received by players? Would you consider adding the same feature to new games, or even existing games?
I would say that internally the way we look at the feature right now is mixed. I think it was really a big experiment and it is something that I think has done really well in some ways and in some ways has really changed the game a lot. I think it gets to be a very complex answer, because there is the component that is the real money auction house and there is the part that is the auction house.

When you see a lot of complaints on the forums, they are talking about how it has gotten so easy to skip to the best items in the game and how it devalues your progression or advancement. A lot of that would happen with any sort of auction house, even if you are paying gold you have that same sort of feeling. You have to separate that from the real money component of it, which also has its own unique issues.

Anyone that plays the game now looks at items with a dollar sign attached. With all of the different games out there that have microtransactions that is more acceptable, but in some peoples' minds it has damaged the purity of the game. One of the main reasons why we did it is that we knew there was going to be a lot of third party auction sites out there. We felt like it is already going to exist so we would rather give players a more safe and secure way of doing that. I think in that way it has been successful. We are really talking a lot internally though about the right way to evolve or iterate on the auction house.

    Interview with Mike Morhaime
GamesIndustry interviewed Mike Morhaime, President of Blizzard, during the release of Mists of Pandaria. There were questions about all of the major titles including some about Diablo III. You can check out the entire interview over at GamesIndunstry.

Originally Posted by (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Oh, there are definitely things we would do differently. It would be so helpful in advance to know how many people are going to want to play a game. Because we could plan things out a lot better: we can make sure we have enough capacity, we can buy the hardware that we need. The Diablo III launch exceeded out forecasts by an order of magnitude; we were very far off. We outsold our full-year forecast in the matter of a week.

The interesting thing about Diablo III was you had announced a specific ship date very far in advance, which is completely unlike any other launch you've done. And earlier in the year you tore the guts out of the stats system. As an RPG designer I realize how difficult that is. Did that all make it harder to get the Diablo III launch out?
I felt like we gave ourselves enough time in terms of the things we could test and the things that were feasible to test. We can't know how many people are going to come out and want to play. We ran an open beta where we let anyone in the world in who wanted to play the game for free for a weekend. But a lot of people were waiting for the release of the game so we really didn't have the indication that our forecasts would be off by so much.

In terms of how people are playing their content, are you seeing a lot of multiplayer or is it single player experiences with Diablo III?
I don't think the ratio has changed all that much in the past couple of months.

Do you think the future of gaming is multiplayer rather than single player? Is multiplayer where the market is headed?
We think the social aspects of gaming are really important, being able to share your experience with someone else. Even if you're soloing and not actually going through a dungeon with your friends, to be able to share that experience, to be online, to chat together, I think it adds dimension to the game. And that's important.

PC Gamer had the opportunity to talk with Jay Wilson and Wyatt Cheng about the changes coming with patch 1.0.5. Main topics have been bullet pointed but you can read the full interview here.
    • The changes to crowd control skills are designed to help create a wider use for these skills.
    • The Diablo team will often include Warcraft and Starcraft teams on ideas to get additional input.
    • Their current focus is larger, more noticeable changes.
    • Monster Level was added to give players the option to optimize their playing. Adding more difficulty for those who want it.
    • They hope each player will be able to find their own balance between challenge, speed, and drops.
    • They don't want the Monster Level mechanic to be a necessary difficulty for players to complete.
    • There are no achievements or specific drops based on monster level chosen.
    • Monster Level 0 is easier than the current difficulty but should yield the same current drops.
    • Monster power still stacks with party size in proportion to Monster Level.
    • Your Magic Find can stack above the 300 cap with the increase in Monster Level.
    • The Infernal Machine will have newer versions of previous bosses.

It's going to take some extra work on our end to make that happen, and the PTR will need to be offline while we make our updates.

How to Change Monster Power Level
Lylirra gives us a quick rundown on how to change the Monster Power levels.

Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Similar to the "Players X" command in Diablo II, Monster Power is a system designed to give players more control over how challenging enemies are in each difficulty.

Step 1: Open up the in-game Options menu (default: Esc) and select the Gameplay tab.

Step 2: Check the box next to "Monster Power" to enable it.

Step 3: Open up the Quest Selection window.

Step 4: Select your designed Monster Power level from the drop-down box near the bottom of the window, under "Difficulty Setting."

Step 5: Once you've set your Monster Power level, quest, and difficulty, click "Select Quest" to confirm.

Step 6: Enter game and profit!

"No Monster Power" is the default setting. Each Monster Power level will increase the health and damage of monsters, and in return players will receive scaling bonuses to experience (for heroes levels 1-60) as well as boosts to Magic Find and Gold Find (for heroes in Inferno) which will stack above the 300% cap. The option to increase Monster Power will be available to all players starting at level 1 and can be adjusted separately for Normal, Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno difficulty.

(Note: If you join a multiplayer game, you will adopt the Monster Level of the party leader. When you leave the party, your Monster Power level will automatically revert back to your previous setting.)

“Appear Offline” Option Coming Soon to Battle.net
We quickly gave a shout out to this new feature coming to battle.net and Diablo III in patch 1.0.5. For those who missed the small note, here is the full rundown.

When you choose this option as your status, all of your Real ID friends, BattleTag friends, and character-level friends will see you as “Offline” in their friends list whenever you’re logged into a game.

The “Appear Offline” status option will be added to World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, and Diablo III separately in future updates for each game. For Diablo III, we expect to add the feature in a patch after 1.0.5. For World of Warcraft and StarCraft II, we expect to add the option sometime after the release of each game’s upcoming expansion.

Thanks for your continued feedback, and we’ll share more information on the availability of this new feature in the months ahead.

    Interview with Alkaizer
After Alkaizer completed the task of being the first player to hit Paragon level 100, he took the time to talk with DiabloFans.

    DiabloFans Quote:

DiabloFans: Starting it off, how does it fell to hit Paragon level 100?
Alkaizer: It feels pretty good. I don't think of this as a huge accomplishment but it kept me interested in playing the game and it was more fun than I thought it would be.

What were your initial reactions when Blizzard announced the system?
I was actually not looking forward to it because I felt I was already getting an edge on other players by using a strong magic find gear setup and I felt this would do more harm than good for a player like me. Fortunately it didn't turn out to have a negative impact on me.

Did you plan on trying to become the first player to hit Paragon level 100?
No, I just wanted to find as many quality legendary and set items as fast as I could before other players.

You completed this feat with a Barbarian, why did you choose this class?
I only have a barbarian and I am pretty confident I will never level any of the other classes to max level if at all.

Did you consider doing it with any other class?
    No

Can you explain the route you did to farm the experience?
My route changed a few times. At the start of paragon I was simply doing standard magic find runs, 5 stack siegebreaker to azmodan because I felt this would yield the best possible loot. Around level 40 is when I set it in stone that I was actually going to attempt to hit level 100 before anyone else. At this point I started at Azmodan's checkpoint and worked backwards trying to find good routes to maximize WOTB uptime and going through areas I felt were with it for potential item drops and exp. It wasn't until around level 90 that my route became Core of Arreat(Azmodan Checkpoint) -> Tower of Damned Level 1 -> Arreat Crater Level 2 -> Keep Depths Level 2 -> Fields of Slaughter. I felt this would give me a good balance of drops and probably pretty close to the max possible experience for the time spent.

Was there any point that you got tired of doing this and thought about stopping?
Not really, I've been playing games pretty intensely for about 15 years. It's just what I do with a large majority of my free time. There was close to no stress involved.

What was your play schedule like?
The first few days I played probably 17-19 hours in game. But eventually I dropped down to probably 12-15 hours. There were a few days where I wasn't even playing for 12-14 hours straight.

How do you feel about the idea that many people assumed you had to be a bot in order to accomplish this goal so quickly?
I think it's pretty silly if you consider how inefficient a bot is at anything in game compared to an actual person.

Many people watching your stream saw you skip over dozens of legendary items, what was your thought on passing them over?
From 1-100, I probably did miss around 1 to 2 dozen legendaries just due to the nature of how my abilities work and not always paying 100% attention. I think going as fast as I was will still net me more legendaries over time instead of double checking every monster I kill.

Now that you have hit 100, what are your next plans?
I'll still play a decent amount. Magic Find runs and test some builds I haven't had the chance to since the patch came out and hopefully the next few patches can give me something else to do.

Are you hoping Blizzard comes up with more end-game content or are you content with the Paragon system?
Paragon system was a good start. Hopefully we see more content and things to sink time in and challenge players in different ways. Competitive aspects in Diablo 3 would strengthen the game.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the Diablo community?
Not really, thanks to those who watched the last few levels and hopefully it was entertaining

Jay Wilson on PvP and Legendaries
We haven't heard much from Jay Wilson in the past few weeks. However it looks like "The Jace Hall Show" was able to get a few minutes of his time. Jay Wilson first pops up around the 2:00 mark, however the pvp talk starts around 11:29. The information learned from this is not all that new, and there was very little of it. However some info is better than none. Here is a quick roundup:

(Also for those interested in PvP, we posted a quick preview of a few datamined arena levels not to long ago).
    • Due to player feedback they are upgrading legendaries.
    • They are adding a whole bunch of new loot technology so they can do some "crazy stuff" with legendaries.
    • They want to legitimize PvP in Diablo III.
    • Pvp will take place as an arena team deathmatch.
    • You can form a team of 4 players or use the match making system to be put on a team of 4.
    • Matches will be about 10 minutes long, team with the most kills wins.

Interview with Joseph Lawrence - Sound Design Supervisor
Kill Screen recently interview Joseph Lawrence, Sound Design Supervisor for Diablo III. In the interview, we find out just how they made all of the great sound effects that make Diablo III's monsters come to life... and death. From chocolate sauce and salsa to home-made fuses, you can find out about the work that goes into creating sound effects with specific examples of some of our favorite monsters and skills. Check out the full interview with audio examples here.

Kill Screen recently sat down with Blizzard sound designer Joseph Lawrence to learn more about how the noises you hear in the game were originally created and captured.

What’s a sound that you really like from the game?
I’m a little biased because I actually did it, but the cackles of the skeletons when they laugh uncontrollably. I did them very early on when I was trying to figure out what those guys sounded like. You actually have to sit there and wait for a while, but then they just burst into this maniacal laughter.
    [Cackles maniacally]
That was before we were union, so all of that got grandfathered in. Now we wouldn’t be able to do such stuff unless I got a SAG card, but back in the old days we were able to do that.

I played as Witch Doctor, so I think a lot of my favorite sounds are those really gushy explosions. How did you get those?
Well when we started this game, we all knew that we were going to need an absolutely metric ton of gushy, gooey, squishy sounds. 'Cause that kind of stuff is everywhere in the game. Over the years we’ve done numerous sessions for those—we’ve put our hands in giant vats of yogurt, glue. One particularly disgusting session that just looked horrible by the time we got done was this pile of stuff I’d been manipulating with my hands—it started off as bits of spaghetti, then I mixed in some yogurt [and] chocolate sauce; I think there were some packing peanuts. All these different liquids have a different viscosity and way they sound sticky. We used all manner of vegetables; by the time it was done there was this big pile of disgusting brown goo. There was even a New York steak at the bottom of it that I was slapping against to make splat sounds.
I can’t tell you how many trips to the grocery store I had to turn in to the accounting department when I’d bought 10 watermelons and crab legs. It’s like, “Mmm, what’s for dinner? Doesn’t really look very good!” [Laughs] The grocery store is just a playground for a sound designer. There are so many things there that make an interesting noise, and there’s no end to the combination of things you can squish together and smash.

You were basically standing in a studio alone with a large bowl of disgusting salsa?
Yeah, just moving it around, squishing it with your hands, hitting it with something else. You experiment until you find something that’s really interesting. Usually we’ll have two people in a room, because once your hands get completely covered in goo then you don’t want to be touching a recorder. So we have one guy running the recorder and the other one doing the goo-mangling. You’ve got to always be open to experimentation, because there’s really no book you can open that says: “How to manipulate yogurt to make interesting sounds.”
The thing also is that sounds are so soft, so if you’re not careful you won’t notice them at all. Sometimes we’d have to move the mic literally a half an inch away from what we were trying to record and turn the levels way up. You get a sound that’s really unique—something that the average person would never hear in a million years because they’re just not listening for it.

What’s a sound you discovered like this—completely unexpectedly?
There’s a trick I’ve modified over the years as it's evolved—originally you would have to light something on fire and then get away from it rather quickly. So you’d have to make these fuses with some gunpowder—I poured a little bit of gunpowder over two-inch masking tape, folded it over, and it made a great fuse.
Certain types of gunpowder would make these amazing fiddles and whistles as the fuse burned. So I started experimenting with these elaborate constructions of masking tape and gunpowder. After three or four trips out to the desert to do this thing, it really evolved. You see it especially with the Demon Hunter, but pretty much with every class except maybe the Barbarian. A lot of casters have the whistle sounds that we did in those fire sessions. I’m still working on that, actually.

"The grocery store is just a playground for a sound designer."

What about some of the nonhuman voices in the game? One of my favorites is the Witch Doctor’s fetishes.
A lot of those fetish monsters came in as we trying to hit a really important deadline and we just had to get them in really fast. I actually think the fetishes are based in part on the little crypt-child voices.

Very high-pitched and sort of whiney, yeah.
Those are actually … I think it’s my voice. Those got done a really long time ago, back again before we were union. That was a really important tool that we don’t have anymore—because we’re sound designers, we know exactly what we want to do. We can hear it in our head, and a lot of us used to just do it on the spot. We would just grab a mic and spit out what we thought we needed and then take it and process it immediately.
The flipside to that is, some of the union actors that we use now for monster noises are absolutely amazing. Some of the stuff they do, it just doesn’t sound like it’s coming from a human being. You watch these people and you’re like, “That is not possible; that dude is possessed or something.” I miss the days when we could have done more of that, but at the same time now we’ve got this stable of monster actors.

Specific actors that only did monster voices?
Yeah. Dee Baker, he just does some amazing stuff with his mouth. [Laughs] I guess there’s no other way to put it. He sticks his fingers in his mouth, he’ll put objects in his mouth, anything goes. There’s a lot of people we had come in just to do that. We’re pretty lucky to be that close to LA to get access to the talent up there.

How did you work with making very heavy impacts in the game register? The Barbarian has so many abilities where he makes the whole ground shake in one way or another.
Very early on in this game I realized that I wanted it to be: If you hit something, or when you break an object, it had to be powerful. I wanted you to want to hit something, because it’s so satisfying. Generally when you hear stuff like that, it’s not just a single sound that’s firing. We’ll have the main body of the sound—say the impact, which will be a solid mid-range thump. Then over the top of that we’ll have another randomized layer of sword sounds—the metal content. And then there will be another layer of squishy sounds. Each one of those layers has multiple sounds that we’ll randomly pick, so if you have, say, ten permutations in each later, you’ve got a pretty big range of randomized possibilities.
Because this is a hack-and-slash game—you’re out there just whacking on stuff and blowing stuff up. It has to be satisfying, because that’s all you’re doing!

How do you see the sound in this game relating to the sounds in Diablo and Diablo II? In my write-up of the beta I commented on the whistling of the loot-drop that brought me back to the original game.
It was always a question of which ones we were going to use, which ones made sense, which ones we thought we could make better. We wanted to pay homage to the earlier games and keep a sense of continuity. Over the years a lot came in, and a lot went back out. One that’s the most recognizable we called “the flippy sound.” When the monster dies and the loot flips out, there’s a little [whistles]. That’s the same exact sound from Diablo II, it just made sense! I couldn’t imagine trying to make that one better—after a while you don’t even hear it anymore. But the older fans, they loved hearing that.
Another one is the health well, that [slurps]. The original gold sound just wasn’t holding up under the compression that we were using—often high-pitched metallic stuff will just totally break down under compression. It had to be something new, but close enough to the original that people still appreciated it. It’s there because it’s gold, but after an hour or so you kind of tune it out.
After speaking with Joseph, I sent over a list of some of Kill Screen’s favorite monsters and moments from the game to see if they could chime in more specifically about the ingredients in each. Sound designers Michael Johnson and Kris Giampa weighed in as well.

    Examples

The festering maggots in the Witch Doctor’s “Grasp of the Dead” spell
The Festering Maggots were made by me by combining two predominant layers: The first was a recording of a wet silicon oven mitt being folded back and forth, and the second was various goo and gore sounds that fellow sound designer Jonas Laster had recorded by utilizing hand soap and other gruesome things.

    The Toad of Hugeness
The vocalizations for the huge toad from the “Plague of Toad” spell were made by pitching down real recordings of bullfrog croaks. The tongue-whoosh impact on the enemy target was a bullwhip highly saturated and compressed for effect. The swallow was just a recording of someone taking some gulps from a cup of water and really close mic-ing it for that proximity effect that you get. That really sold the size of the frog for me.

The Demon Hunter's Rapid Fire ability
Rapid Fire took many iterations before we stuck with the one we shipped with. We wanted to have it sound aggressive yet organic at the same time. It basically consists of a few layers that are triggered randomly with every shot, which happens very, very quickly. You will generally hear the wooden “chunkiness” of the crossbow, along with some low-end thumps mixed with a ricochet type of sound every now and again to give it a little bit of a machine-gun type feel. Along with each projectile shooting off, there is a “firey” type of loop attached while also triggering aggressive sounding one-shot whooshes as it flies away from the player. We didn’t want the loop to be too audible for the player, as it could easily cloud up the mix too much. So you don’t hear the “firey” loop of the projectile too much as it flies away from the player, but you will hear it more obviously as it flies by your head if you play co-op with another Demon Hunter.

    The Demonic Hell Bearer
The vocalizations for the Demon Hell Bearer (Siege Wall Monster) were performed by voice actor Fred Tatasciore and recorded by Mike here at Blizzard. Once we had the recordings from the voice actor I pitched them down quite a bit and layered in all sorts of animals—primarily pigs, tigers, and bears. The Vomit Soldiers (Demon Troopers) were basically Fred Tatasciore pitched down with some bass-enhancement plugins, and then layered back on top of themselves, offset, and recorded out as a final audio file.

The Witch Doctor’s “Acid Cloud” ability
The actual spellcast sound was a mixture of verbed-out voices, lava bubbles, paint splats, and some steam iron chuffs. The residual acid loop that you hear after the spell is cast is actually Mike recording some heated-up olive oil in a skillet with water being trickled down into it.

    Cheap Barbarian End-Game Build
Nethox has posted a cheap build to help Barbarians defeat Ghom, Azmodan, and Diablo. The basic concept is stacking some cheap Life on Hit gear and using Frenzy and the Crushing Advance rune on Overpower to heal yourself. Check out his thread for more information and to leave any feedback.

    Fast Experience Farming Locations
With all of the quest exp exploits now fixed, the quickest way to level goes back to the old hack n' slash grind. However, Toxikdevil has noted some key locations that have the highest density of monsters in the smallest areas for quick farming. These areas are all viable on any difficulty so you can level all the way to sixty with this tactic. Although in the video he has a level sixty doing most of the work, with some cheap gear, all of the locations are easily solo-able.

    Follower DPS Calculator
Earlier this week, we reported that centella created a Scoundrel DPS calculator. Since then, he has also created pages for the Enchantress and Templar. So, no matter what Follower you like to play with, you can help maximize their damage output. Check out his thread for more information and to leave any feedback.
