D2 was much simpler to develop. Game development costs increased exponentially in the last years. The "guest monsters" in A5 alone must have saved a lot of costs on sprites. Also, the RMAH somewhat restraints the possibility of doing whatever ones likes, as there is money behind.Quote from Shad3slayer
It's true that 1.07 was quite a few patches + LoD. The difference is LoD was ALREADY OUT a year and a half after D2 release. Back when Blizzard was a way smaller company with much more limited resources and personnel.
Right, because Tristram for D2 ubers wasn't recycled.Quote from Shad3slayer
Now we got some half assed first aid fix atttempts (ubers - recycled maps with recycled enemies giving a useless reward, whoopdedoo),
Errr... everyone because dupes totally messed up with the economy. You found a Windforce? Gratz, except that those bots are selling them by dozens! Heck, D2 economy was referred by some people as "jokeonomy". Not too hard to figure out why.Quote from Shad3slayer
Duped stuff in D2. Exactly, who cares?
Sure, and when I buy stuff IRL, I don't care if it was stolen? Is it supposed to be funny?Quote from Shad3slayer
If I MF, find stuff, trade it for what I want, I don't care if it's duped or not.
Listening to you, it's like uniques rained all over the place. Well, they didn't. I played for 4 years (even made it to the hardcore ladder and stuff) and I can literally count the number Occys/Arachs/Shakos on the fingers of one hand. Highest rune I saw was an Ist.Quote from Shad3slayer
Also about sitting in channel. 1) it was fun as you spoke to someone all the time, bartered, talked via /f m (I still can't believe this is not in Diablo 3) 2) you could always offer a good deal and trade instantly if you cba "wasting time looking for a good deal". When I wanted my first Tal Armor in any ladder, I'd MF for a couple days, find a few Arach's/ Shakos/ Occys/ runes and stuff and offer more than the worth of Tal armor, I'd get it instantly, then I'd continue MFing and getting better and better stuff...
I won't even mention the fact that chatting in /f m while playing was plain dangerous for me.
I don't buy gold, yet I'm progressing quite fine. Sure, I won't be farming MP10 with my gear, but I'm doing MP7 and I'm pretty happy with that. It's just that - again - D2 was tuned much lower. Why? Because it is a single player game, basically. Which is supposed to be playable offline, with no trade. So of course, once you get access to some decent gear, you just mow stuff down. In 1.09 and before, it went all they way up to solo-8.Quote from Shad3slayer
you know, constant upgrades, constant buying and selling. Just the opposite of Diablo 3 where you buy good stuff for a couple of million that you pick from the ground (as you rarely get anything sellable) and then you can't get anymore upgrades unless you buy gold.
How is D2 leveling different from D3 one? They're both boring after a couple of times. Actually, D2 was worse because if you got your main skills at lvl 24 or 30, you had to resort on boring and painful leveling. Same deal if you're a no-energy class (which for HC, was all classes). If anything, D3 leveling is more fun (with the exception of closed areas for final bosses - which IS a gigantic pain in the booty, I'll agree).Quote from Shad3slayer
Ladder. Yes, good point. Ladder is a big part of what makes D2 so long lasting. Though I'm happy we don't have it in D3 due to the extremely boring lvling process I already mentioned in one of my previous posts (and I note no one disagreed on that :P).
Hmmm, why didn't I get those tons of stuff, I wonder?Quote from Shad3slayer
What would you get by MFing? Tons of stuff. I'd go as far as to say you get SOMETHING sellable EACH or very nearly each run. You can get Runes (Pul+)
"Making alts" makes a huge time sink, which runs contrary to today's gamer's profile. Today's average gamer won't do that, he will rather leave and play another game whose editor is not as clueless.Quote from Shad3slayer
I know respec was released with 1.11. Still, I think it wasnt a neccessary addition to Diablo 2. Its system actually stimulated making alts
Holy fire is 1.09, it was all but eliminated in 1.10. Zealot was marginal, especially in HC.Quote from Shad3slayer
Pala - Hammerdin (you are correct about it being the most common at least), Zealot, Holy Fire Chipadin
PS got the axe in 1.10, shadow as well. The HUGE majority of assassins in 1.10 ran either DS/LS or a hybrid with Dragon Talon.Quote from Shad3slayer
Assassin - Shadow, Trapsin, Phoenix Strike
The huge majority ran the cookie-cutter Lightning or the Burrito Cannon with MS.Quote from Shad3slayer
Amazon - Light Javazon, Poison Javazon, Bowazon, Spearazon (though much less common)
How can you list Bone Spear and Bone Spirit separately, as the synergize each other in 1.10.Quote from Shad3slayer
Necro - Summoner. Bone Spear. Bone Spirit. Poison. All about equally played.
Necro is either Summon or Bone. Some motivated guys run poison nova but not much.
Elemental was crap in 1.09, and half of the tree is still useless in 1.10. WW/WB are cool, that's for sure. But hey, I thought the class had 3 trees?Quote from Shad3slayer
Druid - Elemental/ Werewolf/ Werebear.
If anything, patch 1.10 gutted the build diversity much more than D3. Which is expected - builds requiring 60 or 80 points into a skill + synergies can only be extreme. But somehow, people did not complain about it. Also, again, you can have diverse builds in Diablo 3. Especially on very low MPs, because that's how complicated D2 was once you got some gear. So sure, you can have just about any skill and it will work. It's just that the higher the obstacle is, the less builds remain. And in D2, once the patch 1.10 buffed the mobs and synergies were introduced, the build diversity plummeted dramatically as well.
And a lot of crap legendaries and sets. Let's take the bows: who used anything else than WF or Burrito? Maybe some WWS here and there too. Everything else (especially low levels)? Utter garbage.Quote from Shad3slayer
D2 had so many useful legendaries/ sets.
Same thing for e.g. crossbows. Oh yeah, and it totally makes sense that you use a lvl 42 xbow at level 90+. And yeah, instead of CC/Crit dmg/AS, we had +X to all skills and resists. Big difference. -

Bleu42 posted a message on So No Offline Mode On PC Ever!Posted in: Diablo III General DiscussionQuote from Indimix
They could perfectly make a no AH offline mode if they wanted to. But they dont want to. So, there is nothing we can do about it.
Btw, after ~3 months of no D3 I just logged in to play a couple of mins, 500+ ms.
I know, its probably my internet connection, still, sucks to play an offline game online.
You do realize, if they just made a 'no AH offline mode', the LIVE servers would be hacked, right? To make an offline mode, they would have to completely REMAKE the game, and completely REMAKE battle.net with a completely DIFFERENT architecture.
It's completely uneducated statements like yours that get puked up around these forums, when all it takes is a little bit of research. -

Yeah except 1.07 is already Diablo 2 classic + LOD + 6 patches. You just don't know how crappy it was prior to that (like, let's say, in 1.04 where there was this wonderful bow bug that took months to get fixed).Quote from Shad3slayerFYI I played Diablo 2 since 1.07 and still do to this day. Just so we know where we stand. From some of your points it seems to me that you didn't play Diablo 2 online AT ALL
Yeah, except most of that stuff was duped. But hey who cares.Quote from Shad3slayerDiablo 2 had THE best economy system of any online game - a Barter based system with values only serving as basic guidelines. Prices of any item are well known (if you spend any time trading) in High Runes/ Ists/ SoJs, but you can still get good deals either way (buy low, sell high, just like D3 flipping) but it actually involves human contact and isn't just Open AH -> enter stats -> Click Buyout.
Also, the big problem with bartering is that it forces you to spend hours in trade channels instead of - you know - actually playing the game.
The main reason D2 had a more stable economy was the ladder. End of story. D3 doesn't have a ladder (which is both good and bad, though I'm happy I don't have to go through the pain of leveling every 6 months). Since no items are taken out of the system, yeah it is slightly less stable. Hopefully, BOA-ing items with the mystic will correct that.Quote from Shad3slayer
This is a good thing however as it lead to D2 economy obviously being far better and more stable than D3 one, even with the game being 13 years older.
And what would I get? That's right, uniques that for most part are not worth a damn. Like woohoo, I get my 1256th steelclash, my 785th maul and the 95th WWS. Woohoo. Oh wait, those aren't worth a damn.Quote from Shad3slayer
Also you could just magic find and play in any part of Hell and nearly guaranteed get stuff to sell every now and then.
Yeah, an no one never ever bought stuff online in D2? Like ever? But of course, all those enigmas were 100% legit and not store-bought at all. /sarcasmQuote from Shad3slayer
There's a reason why 100% of rich D3 players are either Flippers or Dual Visa wielders. (This was all before d2jsp took over and D2 had an actual economy in-game - I can see how someone wouldn't like d2jsp, though it has its merits)
Yeah, and it only took patch 1.11 to add it. Whoop-dee-doo. Check the calendar and look when it was released.Quote from Shad3slayerLet's get the obvious right out of the way: D2 has a respec system (again obvious you haven't played it in a long time/ ever).
And it was the same thing in D2. Most pallies ran hammerdins, most sorcs ran with FO/FB (with an occasional lighning) and so on.Quote from Shad3slayer
Diablo 3 skills are unbalanced. Every class has 1-2 viable builds and everything else is used than less than 1% of the population.
Maybe the game had slightly more diversity, but you wanna know why? Because it was undertuned as heck. If you got some half decent (duped) gear, the chance of getting killed was closed to zero. Like, if Inferno had only MP0 (at its current level), you would have a bajillion of builds as well. Luckily, you have 11 sub-levels. -

scottizzle09 posted a message on I am a console convert! At first, I was pretty much just interested to see what changes were made to D3 by Blizzard in regards to moving a pc-based game to the console.Posted in: Diablo III General Discussion
I must say that I am INCREDIBLY impressed overall! With only about 10 hours logged into a game in which I have played copious hours for my Mac, I have compiled a short list of things that I am very pleased with and I believe positive feedback is sorely missing from these forums so I decided to create an account with the forums and post to share some positive light. :Thumbs Up:
- Controls - I LOVE the complete control over my character!! I can't emphasize enough how great it feels to be able to lock on to my target and then move away when those nasty fireballs are on their way to me without clicking the other side of the screen! I am a HUGE fan and think the evasive controls are an amazing touch, thank you!
- UI - My background is in User Experience and Information Architecture and I am again, incredibly impressed by how well the interface was created for the console. You could tell that Blizzzard developers did their homework and a lot of usability studies to make the game feel as if it were a first class, first thought to develop from the console. Probably a great benefit from having separate dev teams as you get a more diverse and open mindset than just asking people from the PC/Mac world to port something over.
- Loot - I am getting excited again about gear! I no longer have to drop USD (because I'm lazy) and get amazing legendary items and sets. It would only really cost me about $5 to be completely outfitted at level 60 to play inferno MP 5 to a comfortable paragon level. This just feels more rewarding; in fact, I got into work this morning and couldn't wait to tell my buddy that (at level 18) a legendary quiver with very useful stats dropped for my DH! That's the part of the game that really gets me excited. I do wish, however that I could pull up my toon on an amory of sorts to take a look at his gear and show friends whilst away from the game. I love me some good meta-game.
- Difficulty - There are so many ways to customize the difficulty of the game and tune it to where you feel comfortable and the risk -> rewards. Not only are there the standard levels (normal, nightmare, hell, inferno +MP), there are also fine tuned difficulties (easy, medium, hard), and yet combine that with adding more players to your party and the combinations are quite many!
- Content - The only downer as someone who played the game for the Mac for so long. I don't expect new content or lore since its the same game from a story-line aspect...but had I known day 1 that this game was coming out for the console, I would have just waited and bought it then. **Who am I kidding...I wouldn't wait a year, Blizzard got me good...I have bought the game three full times now, twice for me, and once for a kid I coach as part of a bet I lost**
- Local Multiplayer Experience - I am so far impressed with this. I can just be lazy and go make a drink while my friends wander the world or do things in town and my toon will stay on the screen and keep up on his own. The loot sharing can be a bit hairy if you have multiple toons who could benefit from dropped gear. It would be nice to see in my inventory how well an item might compare for a member of my party so we can make better decisions about who the item best suits. Right now that process takes a fair amount of manual labor and impedes game progress. At least the loot is more meaningful and not as cluttered in terms of the amount of things that drop so we aren't in our inventory screens as much as we might have been on the PC/Mac.
- Online Experience - I have only played one game online so far and I think it works out very well. It is just like the PC/Mac version except for some very cool buffs! I love the ability to fine tune the group you are looking for based on some important criterion; such as key warden, brawling, killing things, or challenges, which are synonymous with PC/Mac achievements but may net you some pretty cool trophies on the ps3 if you are into that sort of thing, and I suspect I will be as I will want to get as close to a total 100% as possible.
I have noticed that my spec changed (so far) in that I don't even bother on my DH to spec into Vault as the evasive maneuvers get me the distance I need to stay alive in a pinch and can therefore spec into more DPS and CC abilities that suit my tastes.
Thanks Blizzard for making a game that I enjoyed playing for a while, feel even better! The visuals are good, and the sound on my 7.1 system is AMAZING! There is nothing like smashing a foe across the screen and feeling it in your gut...poor neighbors! -

WarlockHolmez posted a message on Rewarding the Loot Hunt - Loot 2.0MrMonstrosity has me inspired after reading his post full of suggestions for Blizzard. I've decided to further investigate the issues with the "loot hunt" to discover solutions.Posted in: Diablo III General Discussion
I want to find really rare items and be able to use them! I want to see that orange glow on the ground and know I have something special, to save for specific builds that could take advantage of it, or for other characters.
How many times have you found a top tier item and kept it? Sometimes I find upgrades for Alts, but even then it's usually worth selling them knowing I can always buy a replacement later. We need a reason to keep items we find.
The intent of this post is to balance (Not defeat) Auction House use and Finding Usable Gear from Playing the game yourself.
Link to Diablo 3 General Forums Post:
http://us.battle.net...opic/9793090332
The core issues I feel are:- The AH takes all the fun out of finding useful items.
- Items found while "playing the game" are Auctioned 99.99% of the time to be able to purchase upgrades, via Auction House.
- Finding your own gear and progressing at the rate of the general community is impossible. While this shouldn't necessarily be as fast, the difference is too vast.
- Personally discovered items will be considered "Pristine".
- Pristine Items gain a % bonus to all affixes.
- Pristine Legendaries receive a bonus, special affix.
- When a Pristine item is traded to any other account, it becomes "Worn".
- Worn items contain the original stats of the item.
- A limited number of Pristine Items can be equipped at a time. (possibly)
(This example demonstrates a +20% increase to affixes. Yes, I didn't calculate the %damage change. It would be +58%, therefore the DPS would be even higher. I didn't feel like doing the extra math. :P)
Result:- The best items in the game can only be found by YOU.
- Finding a specific legendary you want will still be rare.
- Finding any legendary may be exciting enough to motivate trying new builds.
- The bonus, legendary affix should have a very unique impact on each item, strongly influencing unique builds. (Better affixes than the one that took me 10 seconds to come up with.)
- Just like in D2, the playtime required for the best legendaries (uniques), could be a very long time, but it WILL be special when YOU find them.
- Collecting gear you find and saving it for later/other builds/characters is possible again.
- Purchasing items off the Auction House will still be critical and convenient for quick upgrades and finding/trading gear required for your specific builds.
- The loot hunt becomes exciting again!
- This is the only solution I can see (or something similar) to having loot YOU find to occasionally be better than what you might be able to buy in the Auction House.
- High end gear will still be extremely expensive on the Auction House. It's not like a perfect item for each slot will drop for you right away, if ever.
- Possibly lowering the drop rate of Legendaries could make them feel more special, with this system in place.
- The items we find need to be stronger than traded/auctioned items, or the AH will win every time.
Criticism:
There has been lots of positive feedback so far as well as some good constructive criticism. I want to discuss some of the criticism and how it might not turn out how it sounds.
The main strongest criticism seems to be that luck will become an even stronger factor with this system in place. That players who find high-end legendaries will be pushed too far ahead. I believe an opposite effect would occur.
High-end drops will always be great (with Pristine or without). But all the low/average value drops won't be and are usually trashed. But with the Pristine system, those items have a chance. Those items also drop much more frequently than the rare, high-end items. Therefore, more lower-end players will be pushed closer to the high-end players because of the frequency of drops. This will actually help close the gap, not expand it, therefore reducing Luck as a factor.
Example:
For every one 1500 dps Skorn that drops, one-hundred 1300 dps Skorns drop (estimating, wouldn't be surprised if it's more). In the current system, the one player gets a great weapon OR great trade, the others get vendor trash. With Pristine, the one player gets a top of the line weapon OR a good trade, and the 100 others get useful items too, possibly many of them gaining decent upgrades, shortening the gap between high and low geared players.
Another very important point here is that lower geared players will be able to close the gap slightly on high-geared players through playing the game. It won't be an instant jump like if they upped general loot quality in a patch, because you won't be able to get the upgrades instantly through the Auction House, it will take time.
+1 if you like the general idea! I see a lot of positive responses, but not enough +1s! -

The story is that you have been trapped into a nightmarish trans by a Dark Mentalist. You fight your way through randomized dungeon levels until you muster up the psychological power to face your inner demise once and for all.
With over 20 skills, randomly generated items, monsters, and dungeons, 3 classes each with a different passive skill tree and extremely fast paced combat, the game's technically endless dungeon (even after the final boss fight) is never exactly the same.
