Scrolls wouldn't have to be one per item, it is just a recipe that you will "learn" once you have read it. And materials is unevitable, unless you want to create ittems out of nothing?
I'm not quite sure what you meant by "Scrolls wouldn't have to be one per item". However, I do understand that materials are inevitable, I was trying to say that materials shouldn't be super rare. Ideally the materials are able to be bought from a vendor or easily found (Eg. to craft a sword this way, you need to learn the scroll, blue sword from a vendor or found from a monster, some gems, maybe a ring or something; nothing super rare).
Perhaps to put what I meant another way, the system used in Titan Quest (had to find the really rare scroll, then make sure you had a set of certain rare runes, etc.) is really lame and boring. A higher chance to obtain slightly less powerful items would be much better in my opinion.
The cube should probably remain in D2, but the same kind of functionality does need to be included in D3. Such as transmuting gems, quivers, cow level, etc.
The scroll idea is not too bad, however I can foresee it becoming some really lame thing where not only do you have to grind for rare material drops for the item, but you also need to find the incredibly rare scroll to make the item. Causing scrolls to become similar to current runewords. If the scrolls are just uncommon (not super rare), and the materials required to make the item are fairly common as well to produce an item of similar worth to a unique item; then the scroll system would be really awesome. Implementing the scroll crafted items as extremely rare and extremely powerful items like the current runewords would just be bad, as "fun" as it might be to try and create such an item.
