The only problem I have with the announcements is the release time. Second half of 2017 for the Necro!?

It is going to be a second expansion "Realms of Evil." There is a lot that can be done with the roughly 12 pages in the "Book of Cain" in the two chapters "The Dawn" and "The Burning Hells."

Initial game price with micro-transactions and character packs with free content updates regularly would be the route I would prefer. The initial game and long wait times for expansions and getting only 1 or two characters after years of waiting is an outdated model. Imagine getting a new character every few months and getting free content updates regularly.

Whatever works but it has to be Tuesday because all games are released on "Sonic 2sday."

Games release on a Tuesday. This needs to be accounted for when you do your math. This only allows for a possible 52 days every year which should help narrow results better. Anyone guessing needs to take this in to account as well.
My guess: May 25, 2021
Blizzard has favored late spring early summer release dates in the last 20 years. WoW is the only fall release date in that time span. May is popular as both Overwatch and Diablo III were released. May also falls in the middle of the games released in that 20 year span.

How is stash space a problem with seasons. I save gear on my characters like mules and then delete any excess. When the 2.5.0 stuff comes out almost all my tabs will be empty non-season...

I think it is time to introduce new sets for each class and shake up the playstyles a little bit. The Necromancer pack will be fun but I want to play different builds with the existing classes as well. With the new PTR patch 2.5.0 we are getting an armory and better organization for crafting mats (why gems, grift keys, machines and legendary gems were not included in this system is beyond me) which is fine but the meta as of right now is the same. So the meta shifted a bit in season 9 but it is still mostly the same (M6 DH was the original meta). The balance is great now (Toughness to DPS) classes have options to the push the leaderboards. The playstyle hasn't changed much and I would more of a shift in that. Maybe we will get something after the Necro pack or with. I just want to use other skills to be viable (leaderboard push) and new sets appear the only way to do it.

The Rise of the Necromancer pack will be a Band-Aid. There is so much more this game needs to get people coming back more regularly. This year they appear to be trying to keep the interest up. Maybe they are building up something for 2018. The Necromancer is going to be a character with all the same stuff as the other 6 characters. They will add new class specific items and tweak other items and maybe add some other items. That is all this pack is another character and nothing else. I feel like they have made it clear that this is what it is. Oh yea cosmetics...

Switched between danettas, no skill changes at all. Just remember act 3 has four bosses (I started in act 3 and forgot about Ghom. When you get to the end and kill Maltheal waiting for the achievement and nothing happens). I started from the bonus act and went left. Would have done it the first try but the second try was fine; 17-18 minutes.

Sales does not reflect a constant revenue stream. WoW for example has generated 10 billion+ in revenue in its lifetime. Overwatch league will get sponsors and competitions and live viewing with ads. There is a revenue stream in advertisements. Diablo has done nothing since RoS. Those sales numbers could skewed as well. For example subscribing to WoW for a year gave subscribers a copy. In China the game is free (microtransactions). Also an expansion is not a full price game and it was never made clear how many of those 30 million were both vanilla and RoS. The point being that 30 million sales figure was never broken down for anyone. It is clear if a game is not generating revenue it is on the back burner. The future of Diablo rests on this Necromancer Pack. If it is adopted by a lot of players then they will release more and that would be a revenue stream. If that stream keeps up the game will get more love. They know WoW is fading and they are going to have to make up that revenue stream. eSports is there chance. A sports league can generate a lot of money if successful. They are obviously preparing for the eventual demise of WoW. Diablo does not fit that model right now. If it is not obvious by the amount of love eSports has received at the previous Blizzcon's then you guys got your hopes for nothing. When you talk about fan base you are bringing home the point. The thing with Diablo is no game in the genre has rivaled it. People will cling and continually get there hopes up and be let down and the fan base will always exist until a game equal/superior to Diablo takes the hype.

You can disagree all you want and hold on to the idea that eSports are not the future. It has been building the past years. They have been coverage on ESPN etc. The main holdback is more money can be made streaming. Blizzard is going to set a precendent with the Overwatch League. It is time to face the facts man. I was hyped but I am not surprised by Diablo getting little. All there time and effort is going in to eSports. As a guy with the same profile picture as you said

It was clear Blizzard was shifting into eSports. It is the future and they will take the risk. The Overwatch League was a huge announcement. We are seeing the future of gaming. Any game that is not eSports worthy will be on Blizzards back burner. It sucks that the focus is elsewhere but eSports means big money for Blizzard.
Be happy we got something as it shows Blizzard is still aware of the game. I hope this Necromancer Pack goes well and they release more packs and continue the free content. If the eSports market takes off we may never see another Diablo game (sales figures mean nothing if it doesn't generate a regular revenue stream)

The announcement is not what I wanted but I am not mad at what we are getting. What I don't like is the Necro pack is coming second half of 2017. The armory and mats tab are coming in 2017. Challenge rifts are not coming until 2017. All major changes to the actual game are so far out. Had they not wasted there time building the original Diablo in the game we could get real upgrades to the game in a reasonable time. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against the original game but it is a 1 play through thing. The mentioned changes are quality of life far more important than nostalgia...

That looks like Lord of the Rings I will pass on that. Good work though
