Why not. Spears/Polearms in my opinion fit that class better than the Barb. I do agree with the other 2-handed weapons.

Personal taste mostly. I wouldn't mind seeing a small shield still equipable while using these weapons.
(a spartan with a shield and spear comes to mind.... this class could even be better because they have already invented pants in the diablo world. so we can do without the leather man thongs)

    Quote from "Linkamus" »
I personally like how in diablo 2 there were 2 classes that could utilize a sword well (barb and pally). I really think a ranger class in diablo 3 would be so awesome if it was built sort of like a D&D type of ranger.

the 3 skill trees would be -

    • Marksman (Consisting of mostly skills that effect ranged attacks with bows or crossbows)
    • Dualist (Consisting of skills that effect your sword and dual wielding ability.)
    • Nature (This tree would contain druid type spells, such as defensive & offensive buffs, heals, animal pet summoning, etc...
If the skills were put together correctly, I think this type of class would make for some interesting, versatile builds.

I apologize if this idea (not that it's really my idea, as it's a pretty standard rangery type class) has already been posted, but I'd like to know what this community would think of a class with these 3 trees.

Just speaking on the 3 skill trees.

I like the first skill tree. Gives someone the option to be a full blown archer.

For the second skill tree I would say Hans is right and we should let the class stick with a single hander and shield. How about a focus on melee finishing moves? (run to a fight while shooting arrows into an enemy to weaken them then pull out the sword and board, slam into them and decapitate something)

The third skill tree I could see happen it's just not my flavor of skills. I would rather see the nature magic go in the direction of denial of movement in some way so you can maximize your ranged attacks.

Personally I would really like the third skill tree to focus on weapon modifications that can cause your weapons to ignite the flesh of your enemies on contact or coat the weapon with something that reacts like infectious flesh eating virus on demons, eating them from the inside out and spreading to nearby mobs.

I would really like this to be the look of the new class, can't say I would be a fan of the class wielding a two handed melee weapon though. A big fat two-hander just screams Barbarian to me I guess.

A class based around weapon modifications and switching between weapons is the way to go in my opinion.

I also would like a resource system for this class to be based on skills that build up the skill resource and others than use up the skill resource. With skills that use attack animations to transition from one weapon to another weapon.

For an example lets say this class has a sword and a bow. This class can add attributes to their weapons that will cause different damaging affects. (splash damage, or knockback affects, or damage over time affects)

My idea of a battle for this character would go; Initiating the fight with the bow with an attribute attached to the weapon the causes arrows to shatter on impact to deal splash. The bow skills would build up the resource system for this class as well.
This class would close in on the mob while shooting and by the time you reach the mob you can use some skills that deplete your resource in this case it would be skills that use the sword.
The sword would have an attribute on it that would cause enemies to bleed out quickly from wounds which would be a damage over time affect. After this resource is used up you can distance yourself while the DoT takes affect and build up your resource while firing your bow.

Of course the skills that deplete the resource would need to be damaging enough that people would like to use them as soon as they have enough built up.

(I am just cherry picking ideas I liked into a combat scenario)

All of the other classes don't seem to use weapon augmentation as a primary way of dealing damage. (magical substances applied to weapons maybe?)
Versus the monk actually using holy spells in combination to his martial arts.

My browser is particularly slow right now so I can't look around very easily but the barbarian can dual wield two-handed weapons in D3 right?
If so maybe a focus away from two-handed weapons and seamless switching between ranged and single handed weapons could be another focus of this class.
(Transition Skills maybe? Like a specific skill will carry the character animation seamlessly into a melee or ranged mode?)
The monk seems to be able to use exotic single handed weapons so I don't think it would really step on his toes.

If ranged was to actually remain the primary weapon then maybe this character will have an arsenal of knockback abilities.

My vote goes for the Ranger class with a twist.

I can't think of any good name for the class so I'll call it a Warden

The Warden will be a protector of Alchemic knowledge and specialize in Bows and Throwing weapons. He/she can change the basic properties of their weapons to cause greater damage or cause other effects.

I was thinking along the lines of applying Alchemic substances on an Arrowhead or Throwing weapon that could cause the weapon to change mid-flight to something that will shatter on impact and hit multiple targets, or become so intensely hot after being launched it will burn through a line of targets and ignite their flesh.

(As far as any racial, cultural, or region specific guesses... I'll just leave that open)

Good idea but think of tha your in a diablo run, Your spamming slow time in a circle around him so when he tries to get to you he slows or his mid-long range attacks slow. You get outside of your bubbles and prepare to set some hydras inside the slow time bubbles, they are all complete you still have some whatever you have left. Then you start spamming that nuclear missle type strike, i fogot its name please help me out here, and .... "what the fuck! ONE MINUTE COOLDOWN OH SHIT!.. Wow this game is so lame Now i'll never kill diablo"....End of story. The moral is putting a cooldown on everything is not thhe answer especially liek this where everyskill is just cooldown after cooldown cause then people willl neer play that class cause they'll always have to wait a while till they can play again. Just so you know, Blizzard has stated many times that they want the game to be one where you get in a game and you jump right into action. This means this system wouldn't be thought of for the pure reason you don't have the continuous fighting blizzard wants us to have.

I may not have expressed this persons point clearly.

Think along the lines of Halo's Plasma rifle. You shoot the thing on automatic too long and it overheats for a bit. It works if you need to burst down something.
If you manage it where you dont over heat it then you can still be effective.

Think of each shot of the Halo Plasma rifle as a single spell for the wizard.

Someone had the suggestion of the wizard having an "overheating" system. where if they spam spells too quickly they would trigger a cooldown. But they could still put out that burst of damage if needed.

Forgot where I heard this suggestion though.

I think that a european styled ranged character could be likely.

I liked that idea for a musketeer. I just think they would need a menacing looking bayonette to go with their rifle/musket.

Back in the day I liked to play the Hammerdin, so just to have that kind of gameplay back again I would like a character that uses some deadly form of a boomerang/chakram weapon that would deal some ranged "arcing" kind of damage.
And maybe a shield that would be used to knock mobs back into ranged distance.
