Good point, but I don't mean for it to completely incapacitate the Barbarian. I shouldn't have said stun, but I was thinking more like a short dizziness period in which, say their chance to dodge and hit is decreased by 25% for a few seconds. Nothing dramatic. I just think it'd add kind of a "realistic" element to WW while not rendering the Barbarian incapable of still taking down foes.
I know what you mean though, if they approached everything with this level of realism than they would take away a ton from the game, but I didn't mean the penalty to sound quite as harsh as I perhaps did. I still thinks it's an OK idea, but I'm not as high on it as I was.

Oct 25, 2010Based on the WW I seen in the early gameplay video, it was pretty awesome even then, but I expect they'll improve it even more. It would be sort of interesting if instead of traveling in a straight line, it's slightly erratic (kind of like the D2 Druid's Tornado but to a lesser extent). I know the Barbarian is a near-legendary master of combat, but I get dizzy doing them little kid rides at amusement parks (give me a roller coaster any day), so it would be okay for the Barbarian to either have a slightly erratic path or suffer for a very short "stun" or "dizziness" period after using whirlwind. Here's my idea of how 'Whirlwind' could possibly be improved, through its obvious powerful bonuses to attack, neutral or debatable effect of an erratic path, and its hindrance of a "dizziness" period.
Whirlwind [+]: Phenomenal damage and attack speed boost.
Whirlwind [=]: The path of Whirlwind is slightly askew, rather than straight. This could act as a hindrance or boost to the ability. It might be harder to "aim", but it could attack more enemies in a group and become harder for players to avoid.
Whirlwind [-]: Barbarian is met with a short period of "stun" or "dizziness" in which either they can't move or their chance to hit and/or dodge is decreased. This effect could last for like 3 seconds and be decreased by 0.2 seconds for every point in the skill (unless the skill doesn't have ranks, in which case another talent could reduce the dizziness time).
Dumb idea? I kind of think it'd be neat but it's just a random idea I hatched.
Oct 25, 2010I think they'll be a fun class no doubt, but not more so than any other. Like I said, it's a fantastic class to round the group out, but not my cup of tea. I'll take: brute force(Barbarian) , fast-paced combo strikes (Monk), summoning zombies and fetishes to do my bidding (Witch Doctor), or conjuring up my equipment to be an adequate melee fighter (Wizard) over the Demon Hunter's shadow, trap, and ranged abilities.Posted in: Demon Hunter: The Dreadlands
Oct 25, 2010I think the DH is a cool class as it fits the gaping holes in the class archetypes, but it will probably be my 3rd or 4th class to try. I think the snare traps should be invisible to all but the DH, but the blade-oriented and other damage traps should be visible to players, obviously, but they should be rather challenging to avoid. The DH should be able to utilize all elements of deception and stealth to make them an adequate PvP player. Oct 23, 2010Considering they said there will be a nearly endless stream of loot, I'm expecting shit-tons of unique looking equipment. It's hard to imagine how "endless" the loot will be, but if there truly are hundreds of pieces of unique looking equipment in all slots, then it will be unbelievably fun. I think your character will have their own look, especially if rares are the best forms of equipment. Therefore, if you're lucky, your character could possibly obtain the greatest sword (for example) in the entire realm. I think that would be awesome.Posted in: Demon Hunter: The Dreadlands
However, I imagine specific items will eventually prevail as the "go-to" items for each class, so there might be a lot of similar looking players near endgame.
Oct 23, 2010Anything is possible, but I don't see Blizzard making any more than one resource per class. Given the Demon Hunter's story, my best guess would be the Demonic Energy type. Cute Cow made a good point, the Demon Hunter will likely be able to harvest organs and innards, so why not be able to draw energy off of them? The problem with this is that in the midst of battle it would be challenging to open the inventory and "use" an item. Yet again, there may be a DH ability that automatically uses your stored demon parts somehow... We'll see.Posted in: Demon Hunter: The Dreadlands

But since a Demon Hunter thread isn't existing yet, what do you guys think the Demon Hunter's resource will be? Some form of Demonic Energy, where they have to "leech" off the corpses of slain demons to replenish it? Wouldn't be too difficult in a world full of Demons, but what if it ran out in PvP? Sounds great to me. I think it would be okay if that certain items were available through PvP points, but the best items should definitely be gathered via mob loots. It doesn't matter. I think this PvP will lead to hours of fun. As if I could ever get sick of PvE, though... :tongue:

Meh, I agree totally. He'd better be freaking malevolent looking. I want "malevolent" to be the word that best sums him up. Not some "sexy", sleek looking emo tool.
On a side note, I think the PvP system is pretty awesome! I hope they do put in 1v1 duels, but the team duels will be a blast. It wouldn't be too bad it they implemented item rewards for PvP points. Not the best items, but good items nonetheless. Maybe PvP-oriented items too.

I think it will be an excellent class to play, right now I'm thinking "THIS IS DEFINITELY MY FIRST CLASS!" but that is likely just the excitement of having a new class to drool over. I think it will be very fun. It essentially is an Assassin/Amazon hybrid. Perfect, really. Man, I think all 5 classes are really phenomenal. Each bring their own unique styles to the table. Heaven knows what the class will be called, but I think it will be something ranged-capable; meaning it will have skills that are beneficiaries of ranged weaponry. That's about all. From there, Blizzard could go any of a million directions.
Considering this class was the first class they had planned on using in Diablo 3 years ago, and they were very excited about it but have since realized it is boring with how awesome they made the other four classes, tells me that it might be something like a Rogue only with a different name and "Blizzard'd" up, so to speak, into an exciting character with awesome abilities.
THINKING CAPS ON, PEOPLE.
What class could have led them to say "well, we KNOW that class has to be in the game!" even more so than the Barbarian, who returns to D3 because they didn't feel he reached his full potential in D2 (a sentiment I strongly agree with)? Your guess it as good as mine, but we won't have to wait long.

Boring story aside, I was into the "story" elements of the game when I first started it. It was all new. There was so much unknown. However, inevitably after you play a game like D2 enough, with a repeatable and repetitive story line, at a certain point it wasn't about story or the unknown: It was all about loot. At the core, for most gamers, the online version of the game is about acquiring loot, trading, and obtaining the best items for the types of characters you want to play. Seems relatively bland, but it was exciting enough to keep us around for years (the majority of my time was spent low level dueling in D2 though, which is an entirely different way to play the game).
The game has had such a lasting effect on me and has in many ways taken on a form larger than just a game.
Disregarding my bias for the series, I still think you guys are off-base calling it unoriginal and boring. There's something I'm not sure you guys have taken into consideration regarding Diablo's "lack of originality and story". The latest game in the series is ten years old. That's ancient in terms of video games. Is it fair to compare its story aspects to that of next-gen modern games? No. Not at all. Sure, the game is unoriginal in today's gaming world, but would have said the same back when it was released? I doubt it.
That said, the game isn't an MMO. It's a game with a linear story that can become repetitive. It's not tailored to be very immersive, albeit that it is really outdated.
Diablo 3 will be much more immersive. Well, as immersive as a game of this nature can be, at least. Blizzard can't avoid the linearity, that's just part of the games. But they can spice it up. At the core it will always be loot-driven in online play, but you know Blizzard is going to go to great lengths to add depth to the world of Sanctuary in D3, something they simply couldn't do ten years ago. There will be separate quest chains for each class, randomly-generated quests, and randomly-generated events (I believe?) which will bring the world to life more so than they could in Diablo 2. It won't just be a straight-shot linear adventure through the game. It will be a prevailing linear adventure with lots of swerves and side-steps (not to mention some incredibly beautiful blood and gore gameplay that itself will be hard to tire of).

Monk will be agile, so fast attacking burst DPS combos with most likely good dodge so he doesn't die super fast.
Barbarian can probably be a brute tank with a shield, able to tank and block lots of damage while controlling crowds and hack-hack-hacking away with consistent attack damage.
I'm only speculating, but I'm sure the Monk will have inherently higher dodge. If not, they'll probably have plenty of skills that allow them to lessen damage or that increase their ability to avoid attacks.
