Thing that concerns me is they seem to have removed some base item types such as the 'Gaff' and 'Spitze' as seen in the first video. I understand they are nothing more then just axes but I like to see the variation.

Also, anyone notice how in the beta the element enchanted weapons' particle effects are just kinda lame mists? I really REALLY hope they become more intense the higher the actual elemental dmg they provide is or something.

Those two things aside I definitely prefer the current style.

This nasty combo of effects actually happened to me once. And believe me, it didn't end well.

I can imagine, I didn't get to see the hydras all I've experienced is the laser orbs even those are kinda hairy if you don't have decent gear. Just so long as d3 doesn't have any insta-gib champions like the ole fire enchanted mobs in hell mode. Made this mistake of thinking my HC barb could withstand the death of a fire enchanted ancient in hell difficulty once... never made that mistake again.

I personally just don't feel like Hammer of the Ancients is a very good ability. Yea it has a +15% chance to crit, but the animation and the radius of the aoe from the point of impact just seems to small. My hammer will visibly hit a nearby mob and yet do no damage to it. It's just not for me I guess.

The only reason berserker fury is playing a part right now is due to in beta from my experience going through trash and what not my fury is completely maxed and seeing how that can put a lot of static damage is there a better choice?

Well you're basing your skill choices of the first 2 hours of act one, but you're wanting a build for nightmare mode and beyond.

Its not that this build wouldn't work I just feel there are other options you could take to solidify it. All in all everything is merely conjecture at this point, we think we know what its going to be like so we are building to counter that. It could turn out to be entirely different from what any of us are expecting and suddenly all the builds we've made so far seem just foolish. I mean shit I've put hours and hours of thought into my build and it could turn out to be total rubbish compared to yours. Who knows.

It's hard to say without knowing exactly what it is you want from your build. I tend to over think things a great deal and try to visualize every little possibility, but I play exclusively hardcore and it just requires a different mind set. I focus on pure survival first and foremost where as you want a more damage centric build, from what I can tell, with less emphasis put on survival.

If I had take your build and replace your Berserker Fury with some other passive I would choose, with softcore max damage play in mind, Weapon Mastery. Now if you were dead set on keeping Berserker Rage then I would replace sprint with Leap or Furious Charge and call it good so long as you kept Hammer of Ancients to a minimal. The more time you have less than 100% fury the less BR is doing you any good of course.

Of course none of this takes into account what runes you're using or anything.

I assume you'll be playing softcore since you didn't specify otherwise so the learning curve will be much gentler for you. You'll be free to try anything you want, but my one suggestion is to change out Berserker Rage. You've got 3 fury spenders 1 situational and 2 generators. Unless you just don't plan on using 3 of your abilities hardly ever BR just won't do you much good at all compared to something else.

Bad news. We do have to play through normal play once before we can start with hardcore.
Just like you, I'll just rush through it and play around with my first build.

Well that is expected but still disappointing.

    Quote from Firehært

It feels like you have 2 up and close abilities (cleave/revenge) and 3 oh'shi buttons.
Since you wanted more control, I would have expected to see leap attack instead of seismic slam. It would give you more control and keep your passive in check. However, if you want to stick to ignore pain-life steal. I would have gone with relentless, so when you actually dip in health, it will be free to use and you can use seismic slam more often outside the danger zone.

I would definitely play around with rupture on cleave if that will be the only ability you are using.

This build was made with the explicit purpose of choice during combat. I can't tell you how many times in Diablo 2 I felt trapped not just because I was stuck with a single skill set or much more literally in mid whirlwind or Frenzy as doom encroached.

The thing to keep in mind with this build is while stomp is certainly more of an oh shit button than Seismic due to its cooldown it is still an offensive option just as Seismic is. I won't become hesitant with their use until probably late hell and beyond. While it does look like I have 3 'oh shits' 2 of them are dual purpose and still very highly offensive abilities.

As for using Relentless as I said early I won't even hesitate to switch it out over Berserker Rage if I so much as even feel threatened and I probably will certainly switch it out once I reach Hell level.

    Now regarding Cleave with an Alabaster Rune you certainly made me think about it a bit, but after thinking about it I think I'll stick with Crimson and here is why;

Crimson Rune(rank 4) benefits: 37% additional dmg to primary and 28% additional damage to all secondary targets over base cleave effect.

Alabaster Rune(rank 4) benefits: 70% chance to explode causing 39% weapon damage to all targets within 13 yards.

Now this is just a hunch and I haven't actually done any math to support my hunch, I was working on some but got into an argument irl and now am too angry to be assed with that now, but I feel like once we reach the later difficulties the higher the number of swings required to down the targets will be around 3-5, assuming you aren't sporting a Grandfather, for regular mobs and a few more for champions and unique monsters. This will give Crimson the advantage in the longer fights where as Alabaster will pull ahead quickly in the shorter fights is what I am inclined to believe. It simply comes down to what are you more concerned about ending quickly; the fodder or the stronger mobs.

It is certainly something to think about and I am really anxious to see how switching a skill's runes is going to play out. As I guarantee tactics will change as gear improves. Using the current example of Cleave once you reach a point where you do enough damage to 2 shot standard monsters regardless of which rune you are using then I definitely agree that using Alabaster rune for at least its effect on standard mobs.

The question is will we be able to switch out runes on our abilities without destroying the previous rune and if you can do it with just a simple teleport to town?

Changing out runes based on if you're fighting a boss or clearing towards one will feel kind of cheap in my opinion. I want to have to make difficult decisions and not just have an easily acceptable counter to any situation just by teleporting to town. Anything less just feels like cheating and I don't play HC to cheat.

Anyway good input, really made me put a bit more in-depth thinking into my build. I still feel like I'm on the right track, but putting extra thought into even the smallest thing is how you stay alive. Hopefully there is more to come!

I'm going to necro this thread as it is relevant to my interests and its pointless to have two threads regarding the same matter.

Prepare yourself as this will be a massive tl;dr post. Hopefully there are some among you who have the fortitude to make it through this and provide either insight or just simply further discussion.

I'll start of with a general question:

Has Blizzard said whether or not we will have to beat Normal on SC mode prior to being allowed to roll a HC character?

I sure hope not, I planned on taking my time with my first play through and really absorb the lore. If I have to play SC I'll end up just flying through it as fast as possible to get to HC and then pay attention on that play through which will really spoil some of the fun.

Now for my build and goals of the build

    Gear Plan:

    Weapons

My plan with this Barbarian is to, hopefully, stick with two handed weapons. With the fastest 1-h weapon I've seen being around 1.5 and the fastest 2-h weapon being 1.1 it seems like there just isn't much of a speed difference to really be too terribly punishing. Now granted of course I'm no fool, I won't snub my nose at 1 handed upgrades or even be against using the 'ole sword 'n board against bosses just due to my personal preference of using a big two handed sword or axe.

    Armor

Ideally I'll be sticking to armor with loads of Attack and/or Vitality as it's primary stats. I'm not going for crit on this build as with most Hardcore players back in d2 I want stability and security for my primary character. I'll save the flashy stuff for later when I have a stable foundation from which to find my Legendaries.

    Rings and Amulets

This is where I hope to get most of my resistances to make it through normal and early nightmare mode. Hopefully by mid to late nightmare I'll have found a couple nice pieces that give me both the Attack and Vitality I crave and some hefty chunks of resists.

Of course this is all assumption that I'll be able to make this work. The main thing to take away from all this is that I am planning on going for mostly Attack and Vitality with maybe a couple pieces that have attack/vitality and defense.

    The build itself:
    HC Barb Mk IV

Cleave (Crimson Rune) - The main work horse of this build. The choice in runes boiled down to Crimson or Indigo, I chose crimson after some thought. I want this to be where a majority of my damage comes from thus the Crimson rune makes sense. Also, after thinking about it some more the idea of facing Arcane Enchanted mobs in Nightmare or Hell with an Indigo rune is rather terrifying. Last thing I want is to draw all the monsters in directly in front of me and then cleave them to death so all their laser orbs are concentrated right on top of me. Those things hurt like hell in the beta and I don't even want to think about them in Hell and beyond.

Ground Stomp (Obsidian Rune) - As a melee character the last thing you want in later difficulties is to be surrounded. Ground Stomp with the Obsidian rune is intended to be a gap opener for use when things start getting hairy or just general aoe usage when surrounded by many weak enemies. An Indigo rune is also a possibility here, but without being able to test it I'm just going to go with the safer Obsidian rune for now.

War Cry (Alabaster Rune) - With my gear focusing towards Vitality the percentage increase of my maximum life should be quite substantial, and the regeneration is just gravy. With the exception of the Golden and Indigo Runes the other choices are certainly interesting, but its hard to out stage a percentage increase in hp unless you are just in dire need of resistances or armor.

Seismic Slam (Crimson Rune) - Seismic Slam is intended as an second option for when you really need to make some room. If you find yourself surrounded and Ground Stomp isn't enough to clear a hole for you to run through then this is your follow-up. Since it has no cooldown and can be used 3 times with a full rage orb this should be able to get you out of any situation you have even the slightest hope of survival. With the intention of Seismic Slam in this build in mind I see no other plausible rune choice.

    Revenge (Golden Rune)
    - This strikes me as kind of the odd duck of this build as 2 of the abilities of this build are for getting out of situation when you are surrounded and this ability is best used when surrounded. However with the 5% (7.5% with max golden rune) health returned per enemy you hit, assuming its % of your health not % of damage you deal, it just seems too powerful of a sustain to ignore. Even in boss fights where your life leech from your gear is doing work having that 5-7.5% sudden health jump is too good to ignore.

When I first saw this ability I thought the only rune possible for it is the Indigo rune which increased its chance to proc to 32%, currently it says 127% I assume that is a bug however, but after playing the beta and testing the ability it became quite clear that 15% is plenty. In any fight the ability is almost constantly lit up and ready to use, and on top of that it appears the ability also hold charges meaning that after you use it the first time you could potentially immediately use it another time or two. Truly a fearsome ability that, in its current implementation, will probably find its way into every build.

Ignore Pain (Alabaster Rune) - It's an oh shit button... Chose the rune I did because most likely during it's up-time I'll be spamming Seismic slam in an attempt to get the hell out of Dodge. I just have to assume that the life leech from the rune will work on Seismic Slam.

    Passives:

Nerves of Steel - Chosen for the synergy with my intention to stack Vitality to give me more effective hp through the damage reduction of defense.

    Berserker Rage/Relentless
    - This is a toss up, with only 1 rage spender to be used in select situations this seemed like the best choice to increase my damage further, but if I find myself getting the crap beat out of me I will probably switch it out to Relentless

Inspiring Presence - More synergy with my intention of stacking vitality and use of War Cry.

If you made it all the way to the bottom pat yourself on the back and then go rest your eyes. Once that is done come back and tell me what you think. I'm dying to theory-craft here but all my friends want to talk about is SWTOR.

Yes /tinfoilhat ideas are quite fun aren't they?

You really think Blizzard would go so far as to sandbagging the beta just to try to convince the beta testers the game wasn't ready yet in an attempt to keep the "truth" of the delay a secret?

That isn't to say the annual pass didn't have some influence on the release date because everything aside Blizzard is still a for profit company they will do whats in their best interest and there is no reason to hide that.

Fact of the matter is this delay has ultimately worked out in our favor in terms of class improvements and game tweaks with the exception of the clunky feeling, in my opinion, of the nephalem altar. Yes, some of the excitement has certainly died down simply due to the fact the bait is no longer right in front of our faces, but that will change in a few more months.

So a couple weeks ago my mom called me up and told me my dog died. She said she was outside and heard my dog whimpering after about 15-20 minutes of trying to follow her cry's for help she found her in the neighbors ditch. When she walked to the end of the driveway she said she saw the neighbors kid and his friends outside and as soon as they saw her they ran inside. Well they took her to the vet and said her leg had been broken and her hip. And that considering her age she would not survive threw surgery. So they put her to sleep now I had this dog for about 16 years since I was 4 years old so I must say I was really attached to this dog in fact she was a part of my life, even a part of me, and my family.

My mom had suspected foul play and when she told me about the neighbors and their reaction there really wasn't a doubt in my mind. So when they did an autopsy on her they did find that there was some foul play involved. Any ways my mom asked the neighbors about it and they said they seen the same kids shooting BB guns at her.

My question is, is it bad that every time I'm reminded of her I would like to do nothing more then to hospitalize the person responsible for doing this? To actually fantasize about doing this and actually getting relief from just the thought of it.

I think the only thing that is stopping me from actually doing it is that I live like 500 miles away.

I had a similar situation occur to me about 2 years ago. I had a dog I'd owned since I was 7, he was 15 when this occurred, killed by the neighbor boy's pit bull he often boasted about teaching to fight to other neighbor kids his own age. I can tell you from experience that the thought of acting on the absolute raw rage feels incredibly gratifying the end result will hardly justify doing so. I got away with what I did simply because this kid was absolute scum and I pulled the his word vs my word to which the cops all too readily accepted. Even now I regret to a degree killing that pit bull in the manner I did. It was the owner's fault he was like he was, he got his too no regrets there however, and I stopped him from possibly hurting a child, but I still feel bad about it.

Pretty sure both I and the other person who quoted you did nothing to change your post. It is, word for word, exactly how you put it and we both responded to it in a way that reflects how we interpreted it. A SC player who maybe tried HC died and now turns his nose up at the mere mention of HC. Now he who "KNOWS" he is a good enough player for hc, but he just doesn't want to play it. Now he comes here with something like:

    Quote from Seluhir
Hardcore removes a lot of exploration from the game. You have to be very conservative, which just isn't how I, and many others, like to play this game.

Sure looks like something you're trying to express as a fact to me and it just isn't true at all. Unless you're telling me on SC people ran headlong into a giant pack of extra strong extra fast cursed fire enchanted lightning enchanted Stygian Dolls on hell mode and fell before them like wheat to the scythe there was hardly a difference at all aside from heavier stat point allocation to vitality. With the exception of the reaction of a sudden player declaring hostility.

Now yes your next point was indeed an opinion, but after the prior point made I was ready to bite any troll bait presented.

Now, I don't think anyone saying they want HC only items are asking for a hardcore only gem that add 70% enhanced damage to their weapons or 30% reduced damage taken to their armor. That kind of lessens the whole point of playing HC. Whats so hardcore about it when you're a walking brick of armor and hp that does as much damage as an entire game full of SC players?

I think what most people want is something to show their accomplishments in game in an obvious way. Sure my banner has 13 skulls with daggers that shoot from the eye sockets as you walk past it in town, but that's just the problem. Its in town and how often have the devs expressed they don't want players to have to spend much time in town. I think hardcore players also get special titles but are those going to show in game? Sure doesn't seem like it; this isn't wow.

I'm not sure what other people have in mind, but I think something as simple as a 1x1 gem that when carried in your inventory gives your character a special, possibly class specific, particle effect. Something that at a glance indicates what difficulty your character has completed, without being overly obnoxious, or something minor such as that.

I think HC only drops and other stuff is a horrible idea.

Why? I KNOW I'm a good enough player for Hardcore. It wouldn't be something I couldn't do, I just wouldn't ENJOY it. One of the things I find the most fun is seeing just how much I can take at once. That's not something I could do with hardcore. Hardcore removes a lot of exploration from the game. You have to be very conservative, which just isn't how I, and many others, like to play this game. The other aspect that I hate in hardcore is that I just find myself completely detached from my character. Why? Because I know eventually I'm gonna lose it so I just don't bother getting attached to it. Which also takes a huge element of the game away.

I think Hardcore should be just what it is - a way to play the game with increased tension for people who like it. Giving them exclusives punishes people for liking different playstyles.

Clearly someone who has never played HC but just likes to pretend he did.

Not getting attached to your character?
    pffft

I had a level 98 fury druid on HCWL season 2 that I still reminisce about. I can't tell you how he died anymore, but I can tell you exactly what he was wearing when he died and that was like 6+ years ago.

How many times when you died on SC did you feel absolutely crushed maybe even shut the game off and went to bed just to come back and make a new character with the determination to do it better this time?

Hardcore removes exploration from the game?
hahah if you're gonna pretend you played HC at least put more thought into it.

    HC encouraged exploration

How many times did you just run past the cave, the pit, level 2 of the underground passage, the hole, and both the crypts in the graveyard? I imagine far more often then the average HC player and that was just in act 1. Now why would a HC player go into these places? The extra experience of course.

With the added threat of death you wanted to make sure your character was as high level as possible before facing any end act boss.... Especially Duriel... that cold aura dick. How did you get that extra experience? By exploring.

The only bad effect I suffered of playing HC that I imagine most players also did that you didn't even mention was an extreme paranoia. Can't tell you how many hell baal runs I would see a necromancer join and would immediately tp out as soon as I saw the first bone spirit cast.

HC Players are a breed apart. I am clearly biased but I fully support HC only drops and the reasoning is obvious. Especially considering HC in Diablo 3 will be even more perilous then in Diablo 2 due to the leave game count down and the 10 second cast town portal.
