um, the game won't die, but that doesn't mean it is without significant flaws that Blizzard will never rectify due to the presence of the AH/RMAH
for those that still enjoy it in its current state, i'm envious
edit: and for the love, Blizz needs to have a more intensive closed beta that involves the entire game, many of the issues they are addressing now SHOULD have been fixed pre-release
Looks like this thread is moot--blue confirming that you only need reach level 10 on a char. before unlocking HC for retail, subject to change of course
Why don't they just put in an option allowing you to convert your "softcore" character to hardcore after you've completed normal difficulty without dying?
If you die in normal difficulty (even once), the option wouldn't appear. If you don't die in normal difficulty, when you advance to nightmare you get a dialogue box asking if you want to convert.
Those that want the hardcore experience from the start can simply convert when they hit nightmare without dying, those that don't (and who didn't die) can simply decline when asked.
I do find it interesting that when people talk about their "system," 9/10 times they don't mention the monitor. In my mind the monitor is the most important piece of hardware. For gaming, speakers/headphones are a close second.
Dell U2412M here. Happy with the purchase, a slight step down from the U2410 in picture quality with a big step down in price. Would have loved to pick up a 27" or 30" but wife wouldn't have approved and I have limited space anyway...
For speakers I picked up the Klipsch Promedia 2.1--can't wait to rock the house (when the wife is away ) with DIII music/sound.
I think the title really sums up the problem many of us have with some of the design choices Blizzard has made.
Lets take battle.net for instance. We know that unmoderated chat channels are filled with spam, bots, trolls, idiots, etc. We also know that a little avatar at the bottom of the screen doesn't really represent "you". Any feeling you have of being part of a real community or actually existing in the gaming world is an illusion. But you know what--that's OK--most of us want that illusion. And for those of us that do, that illusion becomes our reality when playing online.
The same can be said for allocating stat points for example. We know that if Blizzard gave us the ability to, there would be only a few preferred methods of allocating them. In that sense, Blizzard is right in maintaining that player stat allocation wouldn't result in much if any meaningful choice. The problem is that they are taking away an avenue where we have the perception of building our characters, and that gives us a sense of ownership and uniqueness. Even if that sense of ownership and uniqueness is only an illusion, many of us want that illusion to be our reality when playing D3.
I could go on, but I think you get the point. Its like Blizzard needs to revisit gamer psychology and what draws people in and keeps them playing their titles year after year.

Cherry picked deals throughout the 2011 holiday season. Waiting on Kepler release (rumored March 23) to decide on graphics card. Wish there would have been deals on the Crucial M4 128gb SSD at the time, just a few days ago was $130 at Newegg. Ah well. Best score was the sound card from Best Buy (price mistake). I know my router is old school, but I have very limited wireless needs.

Blizzard does take their time, until its clear they are out of time.
They need to get D3 out in front of MoP, their real cash cow. This is the reason for the "rush".

I'm hoping the Hawk edition will be available at launch (March 19th).
Latest rumors have Kepler paper launch scheduled for March 13th. Exciting times if you are in the market for a graphics card.
