Has anyone tried to calculate the value (average increased chance to crit) for this passive? Here is the description, "Gain 3% Critical Hit Chance every second. This bonus is reset 1 second after you successfully critically hit."

So 3% crit per second until you critically strike and the bonus crit lasts for a 1 second 'buffer' period.
Let's assume a best-case scenario of a 1.1 attack/sec weapon speed, a base crit chance of 5%, and that each attack only hits 1 target. What is the average increased chance to crit?

Since Monks are the most active classes(requiring combos) is it possible that they have equal potential as the others but are simply more difficult to use? Once again I'm not in the beta and looking for some insight from those who are.

It's a matter of opinion really. The monk was the easiest play through for me personally and I never came close to dying against the Skeleton King. The melee classes do have a huge advantage when it comes to the 30% dmg reduction buff though. I almost feel like it's too powerful, but without experiencing the later difficulties it's impossible to know for sure.

Perhaps blizzard will make xbox or PS3 controllers supported for Diablo 3 and allow you to play with one of those instead of the keyboard+mouse combo if you choose. I would actually prefer using a joystick to move over clicking, but then I wonder how you would open doors and pick up items.

Thats an interesting way to see it. Should others be forced to play with you by that logic?

Lol I'm not sure what you mean by this. If I join a public game that means that I want to play with other players, not people who refuse to contribute whatsoever. I never said others should be forced to play with me. You're argument was that if I want gear then I can go solo because I don't have to play as a group. My argument is that I shouldn't be forced to play solo to avoid griefers.

    Quote from Drachar

    1. All gear is possible to obtain on your own. This does not force people together to obtain items to improve your character simply because it is the only way. This helps a lot with the morale of the group. You are not forced to be here and does not "have" to do this.

I got killed by a molten pack, not realizing how strong they were. I'm not sure but I think they explode for a ton of damage when you kill them so make sure you move away before they die, or not, since it's better to see for yourself. I'm not 100% sure about that effect so any information would be nice. Also can you guys explain the special abilities of the wallers, and vortex because I haven't encountered these yet.

Cant really remember a situation in D2 where i felt a kick system was needed. Aside from PKs of course.

For people who compare it with WoW: There are a few things in that i think it is not needed as much in D3:

    1. All gear is possible to obtain on your own. This does not force people together to obtain items to improve your character simply because it is the only way. This helps a lot with the morale of the group. You are not forced to be here and does not "have" to do this.

    2. There is no queue system. If people are being horrible and/or jerks you can leave and join another game directly without a penalty.

    3. AH allows a full alternative to gear progression rather then hunting for drops yourself.
Diablo II and Diablo 3 really aren't comparable. In diablo 3 you can just join a game, sit safely in town, and receive experience from the other members no matter where they are. In diablo II you had to be quite close to the monsters to get any experience. And I don't know how you think gear even relates to the problem. Without a kicking system you will see a large number of griefers once people start leveling their second or third characters and don't feel like doing the work themselves. This is because there is no penalty for doing so. At least with a kicking system you can control it a little bit. I shouldn't have to leave a game and completely redo what I was doing because another player doesn't feel like contributing. Nor should I have to play solo if I don't want to.

They should allow kicking but whenever they kick somebody they should just clone a game for him (even if it was to not allow to form a party) so he/her can finish game himself and grief that he was kicked just before the last boss or whatever.

I like this. Some people kick for the dumbest reasons. Maybe I got kicked just because the other 3 people thought it would be funny, at least now I don't lose all that progress, and now that you are in a private game you could just open it back up to public and get a new group of people, where an afker or griefer would still be sitting in town with no one and they wouldn't be able to grief anyone.

The main difference is that the cold affix on weapons will be a much lower damage increase than the other elemental dmg affixes and that's how they are balancing it.

ArcaneD 13 Night of the Void Bow (GenericBowWeapon)

ColdD 13 Arctic of Frost Bow (GenericBowWeapon)
    • +(67-134)-(157-313) Cold Damage

FireD 13 of Burning Bow (GenericBowWeapon)

HolyD 13 Radiant of Smiting Bow (GenericBowWeapon)
    • +(112-224)-(261-522) Holy Damage

LightningD 13 Rage of Discord Bow (GenericBowWeapon)

PoisonD 13 Black of Sores Bow (GenericBowWeapon)

Do you see the difference between the highest affix of cold damage versus the other 5 elemental dmg affixes?

With removal of secondary effects from elemental affixes (apart from freeze in cold damage) players are wondering if there still is a difference between damage generated from different elemental affixes other than graphic effect?
There are still elemental resistances, both on monsters and players, so damage type can come into play both in PvE and PvP. There isn’t a ton of resistance around though, so it’s not something that stacks super high, and there’s no elemental immunity. Skills also differ enough that you’ll have some outs if you do run into an enemy with high resistance. (it’s not D2 where you just spam your 1 skill and if you come up against an enemy that’s resistant to that 1 skill you’re screwed)

Compared to Diablo II where weapons took 8 spaces instead of 2 there is a hell of a lot more space in diablo III. And you can use all 10 of your characters to hold items on top of the enormous fully upgraded stash. Also you won't have to waste tons of inventory space holding charms like in Diablo II.

posted a message on Comparing Weapons W/ Primary Attribute To Other Weapons
Well the equation could be shortened in a couple ways. For the first part you can simply take the DPS that the weapons show instead of calculating it yourself:

    (DPS1 + DPS2) / 2 * 1.15 (1 + primary attribute / 100) * (1 + crit chance * crit dmg)

Then you can take out the 15% increased attack speed bonus since its a constant and cancels out.

    (DPS1 + DPS2) / 2 * (1 + primary attribute / 100) * (1 + crit chance * crit dmg)

If your crit chance and crit dmg don't change by switching the weapons you can also remove those portions

    (DPS1 + DPS2) / 2 * (1 + primary attribute / 100)

Last if the DPS of the two weapons you are switching are equal than the average dps does not change and you can take that part out too

    (1 + primary attribute / 100)

So let's say you had these 3 weapons and you want to switch weapon 1 with weapon 3 and your base dexterity before the weapon bonuses was 100.
    Weapon 1: 15 dps 0 dex
    Weapon 2: 16 dps 5 dex
    Weapon 3: 17 dps 10 dex

You would want to use the equation with the DPS numbers in it because the dps between weapon 1 and weapon 3 are different.
    The Percent Difference = (New Weapons / Old Weapons - 1) * 100
    =([(DPS3 + DPS2) / 2 * (1 + primary attribute / 100)] / [(DPS1 + DPS2) / 2 * (1 + primary attribute / 100)] - 1) * 100
    =([(17 + 16) / 2 * (1 + (100+5+10) / 100)] / [(15 + 16) / 2 * (1 + (100+5) / 100)] - 1) * 100
    =(1.116 - 1) * 100
    =11.6% increased dps

Now let's say the dps does not change between the 2 weapons, and just the increase of your primary stat. You would switch weapon 1 with weapon 3 in this case, which both also have the same dps. And let's say your base dexterity is 150 this time
    Weapon 1: 15 dps 0 dex
    Weapon 2: 16 dps 0 dex
    Weapon 3: 15 dps 13 dex

You can use the equation with just the attribute numbers in it because the dps between weapon 1 and weapon 3 do not change and therefore cancel out.
    The Percent Difference = (New Weapons / Old Weapons - 1) * 100
    = [(1 + primary attribute / 100) / (1 + primary attribute / 100) - 1] * 100
    = [(1 + (150+13) / 100) / (1 + 150 / 100) - 1] * 100
    = [2.63 / 2.5 - 1] * 100
    = 5.2% increased dps

posted a message on Comparing Weapons W/ Primary Attribute To Other Weapons
The weapon dps takes into account attack speed and weapon dmg increases because those are now set to only affect that weapon. But dexterity affects your overall dps, and both weapons, so it is not included into the individual weapon dps.

To answer your question you would have to figure out your total dps with each set of weapons, even if you are only changing the 1 weapon, because the primary attribute increase would have an effect on both weapon. To do this you would do this:

    [(min dmg1+max dmg1) / 2 * weapon speed1 + (min dmg2+max dmg2) / 2 * weapon speed2] / 2 * 1.15 * (primary attribute / 100 + 1) * (1 + crit chance * crit dmg)

    I hope this helps.

posted a message on Secret Cow Level
Hello, I am making this thread with the intention of discussing the current available information on how to unlock the Secret Cow Level. This post will be updated if any changes or new information pertaining to unlocking the Secret Cow Level becomes available. I hope to keep this post up to date as more information becomes available, even after the launch of Diablo 3 on May 15th. This is all meant to bring the community together and help get the information out to people as fast as possible allowing the fastest possible access to the Secret Cow Level to those who are interested in pursuing it. Please bookmark this thread and post any new information, drop locations, and screenshots as you discover them.

The only information I have so far comes from DiabloNut’s database. In the database you can find an item called the Staff of Herding with the description, “Only one bovine in all of Sanctuary could possibly have a use for this.”

This item will be crafted using the Blacksmith, Haedrig, after finding the plan to create the staff. This plan only requires your Blacksmith to be level one, so you will not have to level him to create the staff. There are 4 versions of the staff, each one pertaining to a separate difficulty.

To obtain the first version of the Staff of Herding you must obtain several items. Each of these items has no value to vendors, and are account bound, and cannot be traded or sold on the AH.

The first item, which can already be obtained in the beta, is the Black Mushroom
Description: "The witch Adria seeks a black mushroom? I know as much about black mushrooms as I do about red herrings." —Deckard Cain
Location: This item can be found in Act 1. I have already heard of multiple locations in which this item has been found. My assumption is that it can be found in only one spot per game, if it happens to spawn at all. It can be found sprouting from the ground in several possible locations. I originally found this item sprouting out of the rock floor in the cathedral. Any information on additional spawn locations, along with accompanying screenshots is welcome.

The second item is Wirt’s Bell
Description: "When the demons come, close your eyes and ring this... it takes you far, far away..." —Unknown
    Location: Unknown.

The third item is Liquid Rainbow
Description: The colors swirl and twist in hypnotic patterns.
    Location: Unknown.

The fourth item is Gibbering Gemstone
Description: It seems to be active but it's difficult to tell.
    Location: Unknown.

The fifth item is Leoric’s Shinbone
Description: This charred piece of Leoric was clearly once connected to his ankle and knee.
    Location: Unknown.

Then you of course need the Plan: Staff of Herding
Location: Unknown. It is my assumption that the plan may only be found after completing the game in that difficulty, such as it was in Diablo II where you had to beat the difficulty before you could open the Secret Cow Level. Of course this could be different in Diablo 3, or they may allow you to create the staff, but not have access to opening the secret level until you beat the difficulty. It all remains to be seen.

Once you have all the materials and the plans you can have Haedrig create the staff at a 10,000 gold crafting cost. To open the cow levels in later difficulties all you need is to find the corresponding pattern, and use the previous level of the staff plus an additional crafting cost to create the upgraded versions. Here is a list of the materials for each staff.

Staff of Herding: Requires Black Mushroom, Wirt’s Bell, Liquid Rainbow, Gibbering Gemstone, Leoric’s Shinbone, and a 50,000 gold crafting cost
Nightmarish Staff of Herding: Requires the Staff of Herding and a 200,000 gold crafting cost
Hellish Staff of Herding: Requires the Nightmarish Staff of Herding and a 500,000 gold crafting cost
Infernal Staff of Herding: Requires the Hellish Staff of Herding and a 1,000,000 gold crafting cost
The total cost to craft the final version, the Infernal Staff of Herding, is 1,750,000 gold.

Also note that each of the staff plans beyond the first has a resale value. This means that these patterns will probably be able to be found more than once, allowing you to vendor, and/or possibly trade and sell them on the AH.

Plans: Staff of Herding has no gold value
Plans: Nightmarish Staff of Herding sells for 1000 gold
Plans: Hellish Staff of Herding sells for 2500 gold
Plans: Infernal Staff of Herding sells for 5000 gold

It is also unlikely that the staff will be sellable on the AH, or allowed to be traded to friends.

The first task I ask the community to do is to find and take screenshots of all the different locations for the Black Mushroom in Beta.

Update: Crafting costs have increased to 1.75 million total gold. I have confirmed that the Black Mushroom can be obtained by more than one person in a single game. This gives the ability to invite friends to your game to pick it up from the same location. Also found out that the Black Mushroom is account bound and cannot be traded and if dropped will not allow other players to pick it up.
