"Why they're cheating" would be a super interesting thing to know for a developer of a game like this.

    It's a useful discussion.

    No it's not.
    Here is the list:
    Tedium - Picking up items
Farming - The sink (can't or won't do it)
    Malfeasance - Fuck the police
That's it. That's literally the list of the reason why people cheat. There is nothing more too it. If you can think of any reason that isn't covered under these 3 bases. I'd would love to hear it. FFS there is a dude with no arms that doesn't cheat. What is your excuse?

"Can't or won't do it" - why they won't do it?

i.e. they don't want to / don't enjoy it - the question is, why they don't want to / don't enjoy it. As a developer or a designer you're constantly asking yourself "why/what do people enjoy/don't enjoy about my game/product"

And you still don't understand. There is no excuse. I'm not saying that there is an excuse, either. I am just saying that the subject is more interesting than "people who cheat should go play another game".

If there's a lot of people who say that your product sucks (or a certain part of it sucks) - via words OR ACTION (action in this case) - then it's all worth reviewing, analyzing, and learning from.

Finally something substantial in this thread.
    thanks.
What we learn from this thread is basically : people cant agree on cheating and the diversity of different oppinions is quite big.
However, as Thaya said i also think we can learn a lot from as to why people are botting. There are also a lot different oppinons here in the thread from people saying that they bot or botted.
Anyways and thats a little bit coming from the position of FunForEvery1 - i think in a time sinking game where progress is solely made by spending time in the game... (as the word..) the one advantage you get from botting is removing the time component.
The solution to this would be to provide other means of progress which are not based on a time sink but at the same time still encourage people to play the game. (which is kinda contradicting to the concept of a time sinking game)
Imagine d3 would be more skill based and you acutally could do grift100 naked if you played perfectly.
Now add gear to this concept. What isnt it allowed to be , to not accidentally remove the skill component? It cant be too powerfull, or even gamebreaking.
Since that would shift the reason for your damage / survivability from the player to the gear.
And thats what diablo is doing. You cant make a skill based, competitive game with gear and RNG. AT least not with big RNG.
But diablo has big variance on the gear. However the biggest problem is timesink due to paragon and the bounty mats and the rift keys.
Diablo is a timesink game type and will always stay that way. You cannot make something like : collect X things fun for the entire livetime of a game for everyone.
The people always saying botters are playing a different game and should go away why are you not saying:
When you are botting because you don't want to spend time in a time sinking game, then ask yourself is a time sinking game the correct thing for you?

While some botters might say yes to this statement, its not always that black and white.
Diablo is not a "single game" but rather a collect of multiple components all working independently but also depend on each other.
    There is the bounties
    the rifts
    the grifts.
    the gear game
    the paragon game
    the theorycrafting game
and so on . there are some more.
You cant do grifts without rifts and you cant continue grifting without doing bounties for mats and gear game.
Although all these games are dependent on each other people might have different biases towards some components.
    Such could be :
I hate bounties and rifts and like grifts. I actually just want perfect gear to see how far i can push the best to my abilities because the combat system of d3 is super fun and engaging and i suck at shoters (my personal oppinion)
    or
I hate grifts running against a timer, but i love rifts and bounties, i can chill watch something while iam doing that and not focus too much on the game.
    thats relaxing.
    or
I want to be the fukin best in d3, well because i suck at everything else and i have lots of time.

    and so on.
While iam really really in danger of the botting temptation because well i hate the bounties and rift parts - which are the most time sinky.
group 2 the rift likers are not really in danger of starting botting.
Group 3 however has the luxory to chose to either bot or not - thinking gabynator here..
    Now comes the tricky part.
Any change made to the game would still leave it as a time sinking game to some way, except blizzard would invent a miracle in video gaming.
Which group would this change influence in their decision to bot or not?
Group 1? maybe i would not be feeling tempted to bot if rerolling lengedary would work with fewer bounty materials and more souls required. to shift the balance a little more towards grifting
may be i would not be feeling tempted if i wouldnt need grift keys.
    group 2? certainly not
group 3 ? certainly not . if you can get the edge in competition by some means and you have exorted all others its down to your personality to bot(cheat) or not. Not due to changes in the game.
Consequential there will always be botting in a time sink game if the bot can help reduce time needed to actually play the game - or increase the time one can play to gain the competitive edge.
Its either lazyness or the other extreme.
However all groups of people like the game and you cant do anything about it.
What we can do is keep them out of the competition via bans. If there where no botters in the leaderbards you couldnt give a rats ass about people botting since there is no trading anyways.
Except your feeling for justice and fairness of course.. but well chill its a game.. no reason to get that much invested.

posted a message on Early Season Rollover

    Hey guys,

just thought about a feature i personally would like

imagine you could press a button in character screen where you could convert all your chars to non season whenever you want . but only once per season

so its just an early season rollover.

i want this because i feel season is too long and this would provide me the ability to drop out early

    your thoughts?

posted a message on Has anyone data mind the PTR for season 6 stuff?
BTW, I'm a gamer not a programer so I don't know how datamining works & that's the reason why I'm asking.

datamining in diablo 3's case - and i emphasize its different from data source to data source - Is more like a: "look at the files with the right tools and see whats in there."

Its like opening a zip archive, extracting it and compare it to the data before the patch was downloaded. new files pop up immediatly. Changed files also. with the right tools takes a couple of minutes.

The next steps require you to know what the different files are for, textures like the ones of the wings can probaly be found fast if they are in a new file. Or take some time if the wing textures are part of one huge texture file, which you could have to compare with other tools or with your eye.

New messages can most often be found in "localization" folders. Just use a text file comparer like WinMerge and create a difference between your current and the one previous to the patch. Differences pop up immediatly.

Same goes for spell info and so on. The text for them must be somewhere on the files, if you assume the server does not send the whole text, but rather says: "display text with ID : 444" - much faster, because e.g less data... So you have a high chance to find such stuff.

    Now comes the hard part.

You use the gained data and provide it in a super fance, thorough and correct form. Like e.g. what is happening on diablofans. That takes for fucking ever.

TL;DR Getting the data which has changes is easy - providing them in a form to the reader which pleases them is a huge pain in the ass.

    thought somebody might wanna now.

BTW i have never done it because you know, lazy. so correct me if iam wrong. But please don't be like : this needs to be more detailed. I just wanted it ELI5-10

posted a message on Area Damage

Since this patch area damage is procced by all your damages including your pet damage. Remember procs cant proc procs. I assume this would also count for it too. So example. if you have shard of hatred equipped and you do lightning damage spell, this would have a chance to proc area damage. However if that lightning damage procs the shard of hate lightning damage, it now can not benefit from area damage chance.

that said : rule of thumb: everything which is a talent and does damage (that includes pets), can proc area damage. (e.g Wand of Woh procs 2 extra explosive blasts, however thats not true, it modifies the spell itself, thus all explosives blast will again trigger area damage.

Since you also heard differently, i guess it because it wasnt like this until the last patch / area damage was bugged in general ), so i assume they just got outdated info

I have some news to share on this.

after following all the advice, especially changing barb build and adaopting playstyle seen in pug grift runs we know cleared 81 yesterday on the first try.

    wasnt even difficult.

Iam sure that the playstyle - draggin everything into a corner makes a difference off about 20 grift levels.

Before we were not be able to do 75 in under 20 minutes. now we can do it in 5. My gear did not change, except for 500 mainstat added.

I assume we can get up to 85 before i need caldesans despairs everywhere.

anyways big thanks to all of you

well no changes yet as the barb still misses his istvans blade..

no luck on cube and drop..

My gems are 65 now at least. And i explicitly swapped from pain enhancer to esoteric because of dying and lags.

In huge density this gem is just ruining it. => also everybody on the leaderboards has it in. (for the lag reason)

If you die its probably because your team stays to long on single mobs and wont skip. IF you have density you can teleport and proc APD - make sure to not teleport in the same place.

However i guess it just comes down to the barb. and after that we should be able to do 80. because damage is not really a problem . if i can cast. stuff melts.

To not die is mastering the playstyle

Ok, we put the rift guardian in a dead end . he was litteraly cornered by three walls.

I casted arcane twister only on arcane rotation.

took us 10 minutes on grift 79 (the rift guardian alone)

I was at no point having more than 5 twisters for a very short period of time.

Only once after timer was up i gathered 10 stacks of power hungry and blew them all out on arcane rotation.

Rift guardian melted like butter - but after 5 seconds it was over.

Problem : getting these 10 stacks of power hungry took 1,5 minutes.

So even if optimizing what i can by positioning. I dont see me doing any more damage without more globes.

Could it be that my pals do not have the correct build?

thats the WD iam playing with ( he wars of course a leorics if its not present atm http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/RoanKir-2458/hero/72517809

this is the monk : http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Dax-2294/hero/72620350

and this is the barb: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Fonzie-2456/hero/72926506

    this is my wiz http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Jalatiphra-2532/hero/71436922

    Some more general questions:

    Do we skip packs?

I die when there are more than 2 packs with ugly affixes.

Cant really jump between them for APD procs because of lag, but if i stay outside to be alive a little longer i get one shotted.

Should the barb stay near the group? if i have ignore pain i almost never die. but if he tries to gather density and i stay back with monk and wd i die.

It is probably just me being bad, however i would like to hear your oppinion.

any advice will be highly welcome :D

thanks for all the answers, i will test it out today.

that info with the 2 barb builds might be really good advice.

i was only getting one orb every 5 to 10 seconds.

    also cornering . cool

and yes of course creating densitiy were there is nothing. We do this, but we have to improve alot on this. the decisionmaking here is the problem.

    thanks a lot
