Title says it all. I just hit level 40 in act 2 and I die...A lot. I suppose you could say I'm a wow noob and charge in to every battle all guns blazing(I played a dk tank go figure) anyway its quite apparent I have no clue what I'm doing =/ anyway I came here for some help. I've done some research but I can only find decent builds etc for level 60 chars and since I have a ways to go before I hit that point I was wondering what a decent build would be? and I can't figure out for the life of me which type of bow to side with =./ All this makes me with there was a EJ for Diablo lol...anyway thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out.
EDIT: I suppose another thing I need to learn is just better survivability IMO. I also belive my dps kinda blows =/
my main is a wiz, but I sub a DH lvl 39 in Nightmare so I can explain to you what I do, build:
Preparation (battle scars)
Vault (Rattling roll)
Smokescreen (Displacement)
Multishot (Fire at will)
Entengling arrow (Chain Gang)
Elemental arrow (Ball lightning)
when a pack is coming slow them with entengling shot and shoots a volley of elemental arrows if they get to close vault to safety, if there's a huge pack Multishot is there, and smokescreen can help you get away of jailers or when frozen, use preparation when you have no discipline and need to vault/Smokescreen or you need to heal
DH shouldn't be in short range for long the farther you are from ennemies the best it is. also try to get a lttle more VIT if you die that much...
Is generally what I used. You can change some of them around for player preference but you shouldnt be getting hit, Fan of Knives is an OS button when things get near you as well as Smoke Screen. Caltrops are mainly for the faster moving moves so you can keep distance, and if they move fast the 80% snare rune is useless cause they run right over it anyways.
Fan of Knives is an amazing skill and I feel a lot of people overlook it because they are looking at Inferno builds, not leveling builds. With a decent level 40-45 weapon it can crit in the 5k-10k range and at that level without stacking a ton of crit dmg % and crit chance, thats good damage. It works well in Act 2 because of the stupid Naga people and the Lacuni jumpers. They come close, you fan of knives, they fall down. Splendid.
Hungering Arrow is good and used even into inferno because 1. Its off-screen range is massive, you can kill things before you even see them. 2. It punctures over and over until the dice roll fails. 3. It kills those ********* wasps so nicely! 4. It can go around corners!!
For a companion I used Scoundrel for the crit and slow though the Templar would be good for hatred regen (possibly even Discipline) and the Enchantress gives armor/atk spd while having the most viable damage skills.
At 55 you get the Scatter rune for Spike Traps which I found amusingly awesome. Used those through hell and even tinkered around with them in Inferno.
EDIT: The worst thing you can do to yourself in this game is NOT trying all the skills. What you read as useless may indeed save you at some later point. Knowing your skills is just as important in this game as it is in WoW.
EDIT2: Also if anyone wonders why I used Evasive Fire with Covering Fire rune...read the skill. It produces Hatred (4 per use) and uses 0 Discipline unless you backflip and it hits harder than a single shock from ball lightning ele arrow. Then if things DO get close, you backflip away like a beast.
On nightmare you can pretty much build whatever skills look fun. When you are running and gunning though I like skills that don't take a lot of aiming. Elemental arrow with lightning ball is great for throwing out behind you as you run away from a huge mob, as long as it is in the general direction you can count of some huge damage.
Hungering arrow with piercing arrow is another great one, no aiming required and it does great damage.
The main problem you're having coming from WoW is running in with guns blazing, as a DH you should be turning tail with caltrops laying. If a mob has already seen you and is moving towards you and you can't kill them before they reach you then you should already be in deffensive mode laying caltrops, smoke screening, vaulting and moving away.
Your goal as a DH, even in nightmare, is to not be hit. Pick two or three offensive spells for single target and AOE situations, and pick two or three defensive spells like caltrops, smoke screen or vault. The rest are up to you.
For much of Nightmare I stuck with Bola with the 14 yard rune and Elemental Arrow with Ball Lightning, crazy AoE suitable until the end of NM. Just run a lot, slow a lot with Caltrops. If you don't like using Caltrops, then switch out Bola for Entangling Shot with Chain Gang~
Use a bow and quiver. It gives you the best results with this spec. But if you can find a higher DPS 1h or 2h xbow, use those.
Stack these stats in this priority: Dexterity > Attack Speed > Vitality. Go with magic quality gear, mostly.
Don't buy expensive rare quality gear. But if you care to, secondary priority goes to: Max Discipline > Crit Chance > Crit Damage > Armor > Resist.
Always have boots with Dexterity and the highest Movement Speed (>9%) you can get without spending a lot.
Try to get your templar a fast weapon with increased cold damage on it (but it's not important). His two heals, health regen, and CCs are invaluable.

Rapid Fire with Withering Fire is INCREDIBLY powerful. Not many people realise this. This also helps if you're not interested in kiting monsters (not that it's necessary on nightmare).
Multishot with reduced cost is pure sex. Find a room full of monsters and spam it. Use your other hand for taking a sip of beer.
Get used to running away. And dodging. And hiding. A lot. That's how Demon Hunters work.
In a way all difficulties above Normal are the same for a Demon Hunter, who cares if something does twice the damage it used to if it's a 1-shot regardless

Absolutely, use abilities/runes as they unlock for at least as long as it takes to figure out how they work and how useful they are in given situations. Don't gimp yourself by mindlessly sticking to one build suggested on forums, get to know your whole class and worry about optimisation when you get to Inferno.
I also loved Evasive/Covering
