WoW symbolises the dumbing down of gaming to make it easier for "casual" players, which is another word I hate and need to add to my list.
I disagree.
I played WoW for about 3 years and I got bored as hell with it and I always hated the art style but it is in no way a "dumbing down" of gaming. It takes a lot more time and effort to get somewhere in WoW than it does to get somewhere in Diablo 2. At least in my experience and I had a level 70 on WoW and a few level 70-80 characters in D2.
It's a different form of gaming. WoW is specifically made to waste hours upon hours.
I would have just said the dumbing down of MMOs, but the damn casual-ness of the whole thing bled into other genres.
Yeah, raids take forever. I know, I did them. That part of the game can really appeal to "hardcore" gamers. But the time it takes to get to level 70 is really fast, you're led by the hand the whole way to 70, every instance before 60 is a cakewalk, and suddenly you get to 70 and then it takes a giant twist. You either devote hours of time to raids and do the PvE grind, or you go into "pvp" where you never actually have to attack another player to complete the goals of a battleground. Arena is a joke, I thought I was playing WARcraft not 2v2craft.
The other choice is to grind again.
WoW has successfully conned 3-4 million people into throwing away hundreds of dollars every year. Which is the goal of any MMO, but at least others I've played in the past made it worth twelve bucks.

I pretty much agree. I saw that it was a huge money drain and eventually quit.
I guess it was kind of dumbed down in a way, but I wouldn't necessarily say easier.
I don't think it was easy to get to 70 though. Well... it was easy, but it was also mind numbing. It was like a chore or a job. It was pretty horrible, at least for me. I got to 70 did some raiding but the part that annoyed me with raiding was that a lot of it took strategy, and with that came at least 1 person per raid that couldn't wrap their head around the strategy. Even if it was mainly just tank and spank.
It was easier for me to get higher levels on D2 because I was more entertained in some way, maybe it was the constant item drops, something.
So even if the time it took was somewhat similar it felt like less time.
:offtopic:It reminds me of communism for some reason. When I play it I feel like I am the one being played.. the character is not my own. I dont think wow takes skill or discretion in order to make progress in the game. Its designed for you to spend as much time as possible doing mind-dulling repetitive things. All that determines progress and accomplishment is the amount of time spent playing. Sure, you can level faster if you put your mind to it and not spend time leveling professions/etc, but I was annoyed at how mentally shallow the game is when you come right down to it. Repetitive tasks involving grind/travel/etc. No brain usage at all, and very limited creativity. I can't say it didn't work, because I wasted my share of time on that god forsaken game. That is part of why I think people dislike some aspects of that game spreading over into D3.
Have you guys seen the latest patch for WoW? I've stopped paying and playing it cold turkey for about 2 months now (from sheer lack of interest, and frustration), but installed the new patch to see whats new...
-- mounts are now at lvl30, and training is much cheaper
-- every modification in the patch notes making something easier, bosses less deadly with limited/removed abilities, quests easier, monsters less deadly, easier to get loot, etc.
basically.. patch making wow even easier to play, for us simple-minded folks. I find it offensive :/ The day I catch myself playing Wow again, will be a sad day, and I hope to shoot myself before I do that because the sight of elves with capes shooting guns and the like makes me want to vomit
How about totally random stains on the floor somewhere, that splurs blood on you and you can kill to gain xp, but no other enemies in the tunnel. Say a bonus level, easy to reach.
Hm, I think I like how easier it is to manage things. However I did like the old grid system in terms of item visuals // Because I hate how the little pixel box's look. :(.
If they keep it I hope they have a mouse-over option that allows a bigger version of whatever item you mouse-over to look bigger, cuz I just cant stand those little pictures lol. :P.
.

If you get personally attacked by letters through the internet its a good thing to always have a box of tissues and a band-aid around.

its completely off topic but i'll reply to this anyway...
to say so obviously i disagree.
It took relatively little time to get from 60-70, alright, but after that you dont "have" to spend hours in raids immediately. Or at least it wasnt that way. I remember how the normal instances (hell, not even the heroics) had great upgrades in matter loots. And the heroics even more. Raids were cut from 40 to 25 people (and some 10 instances) to make things "faster" and easier to organize. Try to get 40 people in Naxxramas that arent that organized and you'll get the point.
raids are the biggest fun of WoW gameplay for me while others prefer PvP.
Arenas arent the "war" part you talked about. If you want a "WAR" feeling go on a pvp server and try ganking people from the opposing faction. How many groups will come after you after you do so... thats up to the people you gank. But battlegrounds have a "war" feeling. Arenas are what they say they are... ARENAS. As if there wasnt an arena in Rome or most ancient cities. Didnt they still wage war? Yes they did...
grinding is an option (a boring one i must admit) that they somehow cut down with the daily quests (now everyone's grinding quests, oh well..)
But you can always make another character. I "semi-quit" WoW at 4 lvl 70 characters (3 of them had experienced raids, the other simple instances) and made another more "casual" alt thats now at 65.
I never thought of it as wasting my time. Thinking of all the friends i made in there... isnt that the point in playing a Massively Multiplayer Online Game after all?
now on the part where Blizzard "conned people" to play WoW... the 11.000.000 are the active subscriptions. Those are the people that added a game card or paid per credit card, not those on trial, 30 free days etc.
WoW gives alot of things to do and if you think how many things you can do for the money you pay, its actually pretty cheap too.
