In diablo, you had to deal with the durability of your weapons and armor.
Some armor is made out of leather or cloth, which I would argue should be more susceptible to fire damage and you should be able to actually see your armor charred as it's durability declines.
It would be freaking awesome to go into battle and leave with your battle scars. Addionionally, if the armor is made out of cloth, then you may have a rather small defense against cold and ice attacks.
If you are wearing a metel item, then your armor might discolor and dent and eventually have a visible crack.
Ethereal items could be rather sweet looking as they damage as you may see an unnatural effect on the item as its durability degrades.
I personally would really like to see something like this in diablo 3.
Tell me what you think.
Ah! I absolutely love this idea !!!
While it would take quite some time to implement into the game, the payoff would look pretty incredible.
I've always wanted to have a game where if you got into a massive brawl, it showed.
As for ethereal items, perhaps they could fade away slowly ?

Regarding ethereal items, i think it would be cool if they fade away slowly. But what I think would be even cooler is if they had this fading electrical effect like when the shields in star trek start to go hay wire. Who knows.
OOooh, that sounds pretty badass.
They could crackle/phase in and out of existance, maybe even dissappear in a puff of black smoke once they do become used up.
Or a burst of electricity...
....or both ?
But that's just madness ^^.

well, of course I would and following your idea I shall say more....
-It would also be extremely cool if monsters bled from different body parts depending where they've been hit.
-I would like to see monsters blow up in a cloud of blood and bones.
-I would like to see their heads flying off as they are being decapitated and arms and legs being chopped off.
-see them incinerated by magic and turning into ash or melting
etc.
BTW: I am completely normal for my age. (I think:confused:)
Many of these things are already included in the game. You can chop the heads off your enemies and if you hit them hard enough, with for example the barbarian's leap attack, you will see parts of the enemy's body fly in all directions. If you hit them with a fireball they will fly away in burning parts. So i don't think Temporalsky's idea is really that hard to create, because they've already created it on all the monsters.
Pretty nice idea. I'm pretty sure they are implementing wounds or blood splashes onto the actual character, so visible armour degradation is just the final step. Probably wouldn't be that hard to implement either, just have varying armour model textures that have certain degrees of quality and then change models with durability or just adding scratches/cracks/etc. textures to armour models.

Man, I fucking love your posts, they're so great for bouncing ideas off of ^^. This is like the third one today.
ANYWHO !!!
I think they may have talked about adding visible monster damage like this, I think it had something to do with thousand pounder :/
I don't think they should add this with every monster though, only with massive boss fights.
Although adding a toned down and not as complex version with monsters would be neat, like having a random zombie limb fall off once it's at half health, instead of bleeding from places where you have struck it.
Blood & bones ftw, i love that idea ^^.
The incineration is pretty neat too, we had this to an extent back in D2, anyone remember the monsters exploding into shards of ice ?
Could have monsters who have been killed by lightning turn into a piles of bones, monsters by fire could burst into ash, monsters by ice could shatter, monsters by poison could slowly wither away, ect.
I'm still all for the armor damage idea, they could easily add it in by making armor look shittier once it's past half health. Sure, it wouldn't be as badass as temporal's idea, but it would still look nice and not add too much to the development time.

cool idea temporalsky but I want Diablo 3 to come out before 2020.^_^
Perhaps JT, you are not interested in quality game play, onlly immediate game play. The last I checked blizzard was into making quality games. Plus, honestly, how long could this possibly take?
Blizzard will have pleanty of sales from this game. Im sure they could hire a few more people to implement this.

But nice idea in here Temporalsky
You guys are going to tell me that you wouldn't want this? Im concerned that if people like you made this game, it would just really suck.
People are going to be playing this game probably for YEARS, and your more interested in the game being released tom rather that
concerning yourselves with what it looks like. Maybe then, we should just release it now so you people can be happy.
As long as they don't add too many different levels of deterioration, it probably wouldn't take too long to complete.
Just a retexture when durability falls below a certain level and bam, you've got the feature ^^.
.... Ridiculously simplified explaination of how programming works though, so don't be all "ZH4R, J00 D0N'T KN0W T3H SH1TS !!
I'm perfectly find with Blizzard taking extra time to make this game perfect, or even if they don't include it right away, they could add it later in a patch.
We still get the feature, and those who don't want to wait get it early ^^.

Does anybody with programming knowledge know what involved and how much time this would take? How much of a burden on the developers do you think a system like this would put on Blizzard?

Thats right.
One of the coolest detail in D3 is the witch Doctor's carrion swarm, that consume all the monster's body and only leave bones behind.
The problem is that we don't now if items will have durability. At the moment they don't have.
Ah ! Man, i love the witch doctor's swarm ability.
I'll actually be pretty pissed if we don't get durability. Even though it often came down to little more than an annoyance in D2, it was still a big part of the game, and it would just feel un-Diablo-y without it :/.

Actually, this is really great. I think its fun to learn about all the things that are involved to make all of this happen. Even I have to admit that this is an absurd amount of time to implement a visual system like this.
How well blizzard pulls of the balance between the character classes and the rest of the fiends/monsters throughout the game is thoroughly important as well along with how the rest of the 3 dimentional isometric environment looks.
I suppose any decision to put a visual system like this is totally up to blizzard. They would of course have my complete satisfaction if they did decide to do it.
If anybody else has any comments/ideas/thoughts I'd love to hear them.
I want to add though that I think that if they were to flawlessly pull off the other aspects of the game and still implement a great looking visible armor system, this game would with out argument become one of the most epic
games ever released.
Yeah, it's pretty nice to see how much time it would actually take.
Although it wouldn't take that much time, many of these things could happen simultaneously. Sure, it would equal roughly 1400 combined work hours (for completely top-notch work), but once concept art for a certain piece of armor was created, the design team could move on to the next while the program team works out the current one.

Well there is a way that would cost significantly less time. It'll just look a lot less good, quite, especially in close ups. Just create an alpha map and apply that to the model.
Can be done rather quickly.
Alpha maps make the model see-trough per pixel of the map (you could make it low resolution and stretch it out and reuse it all over the models, for all models). So you can poke holes in the texture. If you give it a rugged edge or something, you could make it look like it's falling apart. Maybe also slight changes in the base texture.
If you did it that way it would cost, give or take 280 hours of hard work? Using the same variables as previously, only now only averagedly an hour per model, which is working fairly fast still, but a skilled well motivated artist should be able to do that.
Problem with this though, you'll more quickly see it is a 3d model at certain angles and see the polys because of it, when zoomed in. And for some materials it might not look right. But retexturing stuff might help there.
I could try and whip up an example if you need, though my modeling skills aren't up to par with industry standard.
For now on I'll view you as the most amazing graphic development extraordinaire that I've met on this whole site.
