This is my review of Diablo III. It was actually a school assignment (I'm going back to get my grade twelve) that I scored 100% on. I had fun writing it, and I hope that you enjoy reading it!
Introduction
Diablo III is a worthy sequel to one of the gaming communities most beloved franchises and I'm not exaggerating when I say that developer Blizzard Entertainment has once again set the standard for the hack and slash genre. As addictive and replayable as its predecessors, Diablo III is a game that will be played by the masses for many years to come.
What is Diablo?
Diablo is an action role-playing game series developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. In any Diablo game, you assume the role of a nameless hero of your choice and set forth to slay multitudes of vicious demons in your quest to destroy Diablo, the Lord of Terror. As you progress through the game, slaughtering the denizens of the Burning Hells, you grow in experience and aptitude, learn new skills and aquire impressive weapons and armor. Outfitting your character with new and more powerful equipment quickly becomes the focus of any Diablo game, whether you play alone or with others via Battle.net. Every monster you kill has a chance to drop items and you'll find all sorts of valuable loot as you navigate the game world, discover treasure chests and lay waste to bosses.
Diablo III Review
Diablo III is a sequel worthy of the Diablo name. Blizzard Entertainment has stayed true to the fundamentals of the series, instead of reinventing the wheel. Diablo III plays upon the nostalgic strengths of its predecessors, while expanding and perfecting the formula. The game is modernized and extremely polished, which is what you would expect from a Blizzard sequel.
The story is somewhat cliche and predictable, especially if you went into the game with a good amount of knowledge about the Diablo series. The story isn't dull either, because the game does a good job of evoking emotion at key points and plot twists help to keep things fresh. Diablo III makes up for the shortcomings of its narrative in the way that the story is told, and the amount of work that was put into its presentation. Diablo III has exceptional voice acting and dialogue, and the world is filled with interesting characters. It's rare that I find myself laughing while playing a video game. However, while playing Diablo III I laughed my ass off at some of the more comedic characters and situations. Throughout the game you will be treated to cutscenes that are unique to your class and gender, which is a nice touch. Then there are the CGI cinematics, which evoke a sense of awe and wonder the first time you watch them.
Much like the previous two Diablo releases, Diablo III is about constantly building and rebuilding your character with new equipment and abilities. Perfecting your character brings the kind of satisfaction that will keep you playing for long hours at a time. As you progress through the various difficulties, the game becomes more and more challenging, requiring you to further tweak and modify your playstyle.
Playing through the same content twice is not a problem in Diablo III due to the randomized nature of the game. Environments, enemies and loot are all randomly generated which improves the longevity and replayability of the game.
The phsyics engine that Blizzard developed for Diablo III is beautiful. You will witness ample destruction amid the chaos of battle. Stray spells will collapse structures and destroy statues and pillars. As you dismember your enemies their severed limbs will fly and their heads will roll, which makes your abilities feel that much more powerful.
In typical Diablo fashion, playing cooperatively is the way that the game is meant to be played. Diablo III is at its best when you are playing alongside three other people, teaming up to defeat the forces of the Burning Hells. When you play in a group of four the gameplay is changed dramatically. Enemies become much more challenging and you are forced to play off of eachothers strengths in order to stay alive.
I can't recommend this game enough. Whether you're a newcomer to the series or a Diablo faithful, Diablo III is worth playing. Blizzard has successfully perfected and polished the already immensely successful Diablo formula, which is no small feat. Diablo III is proof that you don't always need to reinvent the wheel.
