Although I have come to ask for help with finding good sources to use to find information for my topic about my paper, this subject is very interesting and would make a great discussion about.
Okay so it's about geographic determinism applied to the Native Americans...
Geographic Determinism according to wikipedia is... Geographic determinism is the theory that the human habits and characteristics of a particular culture are shaped by geographic conditions. Coined by Ellsworth Huntington, the theory looked at the rise and fall of the Roman Empire from 400-500 A.D. Much of the fall of the empire had to do with a regional drought which decreased the fertility of the land and agriculture output. The lack of food from this event strained the empire and exacerbated the political situation to the point of collapse. The theory has grown to encompass all environmental and geographic conditions and their impact on the social, political and economic forces of a society. Technology is seen as the only way to mitigate risks associated with geographic determinism.
I was looking at different aspects of what geographic determinism effected such as culture, religion, and war dynamics...
Here is the email my prof. sent me concerning my idea for my paper...
I like the idea of applying geographic determinism to the Americas and the types
of questions you're asking--although you may be biting off more than you can
chew if you try to cover them all (but maybe not). I'd suggest using the South
American Peruvian civilizations (the Nazca, the Incas who built Machu Picchu,
etc) as a counter-case study of the North American Indian to help you starkly
contrast the Northern (simpler tribal unit prevails) and Southern (advanced,
complex societies) cases using the principles of geographic determinism to
explain the contrast.
______
So basically I want to apply how geographical determinism morphed the aspects of the Incan civilization to what they were and contrast it to some northern american tribe and how they developed through their geographical determinants.
This is supposed to be a 4-5 paper typed 12 font with no spacing. What I'm working on is my first outline which is due tomorrow lol... Don't you love procrastination? This outline needs to be as big as possible with as many points I want to bring up as possible.
Any help at all would be SO VERY APPRECIATED. I'm having trouble finding info from good creditable sources...
I was just looking into how the Incas farmed on the Andes mountains, which to me, they had to do based on their geographic placement of their civilization... That might be something I could run with, I don't know...
Once again, thanks to ANYONE who helps, I will love you long time.
Hm, good idea. I mean I didn't put this in the D3 section... So it's legit. And it's not like I'm taking your thoughts and running with them, I did ask for sources. But yeah, I might take the ideas of sports and run with them... lol. I need more ideas... with more info and such. Anything is appreciated, thanks Airandius!
EDIT: Like how did geo. determinism effect how they played sports/types of sports in contrast to northern native american tribes? - That's the kind of contrast I need help finding.
First off, with only writing 4-5 pages, you should really choose just a few aspects to talk about. With this, I would also choose a particular Native American tribe to focus on. I would choose the Sioux from the great plains because geographically they are very different from what the Incas had.
Social -
Sioux - close families/tribes, wars against other tribes for land (large area)
Incas - close society, few wars over land until the Spanish came (small area)
Religion
Sioux - Thankful to Gods for providing earth and their necessities (fewer resources and reliant on weather patterns)
Incas - More universal religion (higher elevation, closer to the stars, based religion off of stars)
Food
Sioux - dry crops grains/corn, and wild animals to hunt (had to rely on good weather/climate)
Inca - tomatoes, cocoa, potatoes, corn (created irrigation and farming flatlands on the hills controlling climate)
Housing
Sioux - teepees 9had wood and animal hides to use)
Inca - Stone housing (mountains provided stone to build with)
For resources, I go to google books. Just tyoe in one specific area like sioux religion and see what comes up. Most of the books have previews that will give you enough information for your paper. I would stay away from wikipedia though.

Wow man, that's money right there! Think you could back up those with the sources you used? I know you said Google Books, any specific ones you can list? Thanks man, that really helped a ton, very appreciated.
From what I remember of Machu Picchu, they basically had to lay a whole system of irrigation around and through it to water the city. You could perhaps contrast the North American Indians who lived off the land in abundance because they had enough natural resources to the Incas who had to shape the land to meet their needs. From there you could debate on whether the Incas were more technologically advanced because they had to be?
Just throwing some stuff out there
While they Native Americans had much more land, there resources were actually fewer in number. One bad storm or a long winter could have wiped out all of their crops as well as changed migration patterns of the animals. I think the real contrast is that they continued living around the climate while the Incas controlled theres with irrigation and creating flatlands to farm on.

Well, those are just quick ideas off the top of my head and my own general knowledge. With those ideas, you can go to google books and find information to back up these ideas. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do the actual research.

I would just find facts about each section; housing, food, religion, social structure, and then use your own knowledge of geographic determinism to relate it to how it influenced it.
For example: Fact - the Sioux Indians lived in teepees (find resource). Geographic determinism - the resources available to them provided wood and animal hides and nothing else to make housing out of (your own conclusion).

Other things about how people lived and their beliefs and such, I cannot help with.
However, if you like to compare and contrast combat effectiveness, different wars fought, rituals and sacrifices related to war, Weapons tech, etc... Then I can help you. Like for example, why did the Iroquois fight compared to the ancient Aztecs? Well, I can tell you that the Aztecs strictly fought for ritual sacrifices; Iroquois, I believe, fought for dominance and power.
Edit: Weapons technology does have some roots as to how those weapons came about. Like the Mayans using Obsidian in almost all their weapons. While the Iroquois had access to wood, stone, and feathers, and later, iron from settlers.
