I think blizzard overstates the difficulty, really. I can't imagine a cc'ing class having a huge problem with trash (at least) and boss fights are just pattern recognition in the end. I feel sorry for the barbarian and monk mostly. I feel like they'll have the hardest time getting started at each new difficulty level - unless they gimp themselves by putting up defensive passives.
They stated it's going to be harder than D2. You could compare it to if you were a level 85 in D2 in hell, and the mobs were ~ level 115 (keep in mind D2's hell mobs were mostly level 70-90) That's going to be ridiculous. I mean I just played a quick game by myself in hell mode with my 85 ele druid, decked out in runewords and whatever else 50 bucks 5 years ago could buy, and it's still pretty hard. You can't just waltz in and start firing, those bone archers are dead shots Oo.
The attention they are giving, and have said they will give hardcore players is great, and I really think they are going to make inferno close to impossible. They can do this because 95% of the players most likely won't be able to finish hell by themselves, but they did get to see the whole game and it's story. So even with Blizzards stance on wanting new people to the game to be able to play, inferno really let's them tailor a part of the game to the more 'hardcore' gamers.
Blizzard will have much better time getting Inferno just right than they ever had with Hell in D2. Back then Hell's level range was 50-99, so it started impossible, but with some grinding it became damn easy. Inferno will have a flattened out experience at level 60, so the only variance that need balancing are the items. Fighting level 61 enemies, crafted perfectly for your level to be difficult, is going to be a great experience.
Sure its granted that people will quit after Normal/Nightmare because they did not buy the game to grind for gear which every difficulty level after is made for.
But if we're looking at people who continue playing after that then alot more than 5% is going to complete inferno. Its granted that its going to be "insanely" hard the first month, I just hope that it'll continue to be hard for months after that. It should not feel like a grind that I can do with my eyes closed, which is how most games turn out in the end.
But I trust Blizzard so I'll say that it's going to be hard enough for it to be a challenge and will include many deaths =)
The only reason people are saying 5% will complete inferno is because you need to look at the numbers from D2. Less than 10% every got TO hell, let alone beat it.
A lot of people don't even finish their games I don't know why you guys think D3 will be an exception and think 100% people will finish Normal. Unless you don't count those peoples.
My guesses are along the lines of
Normal 85%
Nightmare 30%
Hell 10%
Inferno 5%
But that is 100% speculation and depends on how hard things really are.

You put too much faith in players skill level and patience.

Contained the montage talking about how hard things are in later difficulty.
"People of the world, do not worry, you will get your ass kicked"
A group of the developers wiping for an hour on a boss on hell..... is it weird that i'm salivating?

Not at all, whenever I feel like Diablo wont live up to my expectations, I watch that video, and my worries wash away.
