Yeah, I like the idea of having somewhere between 3-5 mercs, but not how they were in DII. You can't add gear to these and they are pretty much just distractions, AKA low hp, decent damage.
But I would still like to see a sidekick (bad word usage). Someone who takes the place of DII merc, where they follow you for a long time, lvling and upgrading as you go, and they will have a small inventory that can store items. I think adding full gear to them would be necessary too. The reason I think they will need full gear is that once they die, they are dead, and everything they have on them or in their inventory is gone for good. You have to go and buy another one (not cheap) and outfit them with new gear.
A couple of things this brings to the game. 1. It gives the player an important choice that if they want to use a merc, it makes the game easier, but there is a high risk to go along with it. You should be afraid to lose the "Sidekick", due to the high cost. You should need to protect them instead of like DII gameplay where if you lose a merc, you just keep going until you hit a waypoint, and then buy one when you get to town. The only important thing about mercs in DII was for boss battles.
If the mercs are fairly expensive, it would add more meaning to gold in addition to an interesting way to change gameplay a bit. Maybe Blizz could go as far as counting a "Sidekick" as another player in the game, causing more drops. As for increasing enemy HP, I'm not sure, it could go either way. If enemy HP increases, it defeats the purpose of a merc, but if it doesn't the enemies might be too easy.
