@ Elfenlied: yeah, but the point was that mana = soul, so when the Necromancer uses mana to create an Iron Golem he actually uses part of his soul...
While mana does mean soul in maori and other pacific island cultures its not so much the soul in Diablo. it's more like a magical force or entity one can tap into. It's an ebb or flow Not so much a person's soul.
But yes if you view it the way you speak of then yes.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
That doesn't exactly disprove the point that human transmutation is taboo in Diablo. He traded his soul not transmuted it into a suit of armor for example.
That's Faust not Fullmetal Alchemist.
I'd love to see alchemists in diablo but I dont seem them as playable classes, at least not one of the initial 5.

Alchemy is trasmutation. Turning one thing into another. such as lead into gold. Though such a transmutation as that is viewed as immoral, as the out going product is not the same as the in going materials. "You only get out what you put in". Such a transmutation would only be possible with a philospher's stone. Which bypasses the first law of alchemy, that of equivalent exchange.
Alchemy is an exact science, an equation. what you put it must be equal to what you get out. You cannot make something bigger or turn it green. Not without transmuting it with something else.
Yes, in Diablo 2 making an Iron Golem is alchemy. You transmute an iron golem from a metal object and the abilites of the golem are proportional to the material you used. Armor has high life for the golem while a weapon has high damage.
Though in theory size and mass should also apply. Transmuting a 3 foot dagger into a 6 foot golem is not equivalent exchange. The golem should be roughly the same size and mass as the dagger used.
Yes if you wish to know about alchemy, Full Metal Alchemist, the anime and/or the manga is quite enlightening. Though some of the moral stances taken in FMA do not apply in the world of Diablo. Making an Iron Golem requires a portion of someone's soul. A whole one if you wish to have it live for a long time. And that is Human Transmutation, which in the world of FMA is forbidden. This is not taboo is Diablo.
Alchemist is a possible class but probably more of a expansion type. It won't be in the initial game.
