I doubt any demon would still remain loyal to them after being defeated by a few mere mortals. Demons sense weakness and exploit it.
Funny, they found plenty of support after the last couple times they were defeated by mortals.
Now, I've already put in my 2 cents on the Cain=Belial theory. I the mean time, you still ignore the fact that last time we saw him, Belial was loosing to Azmodan. What is there that indicates that this has changed. That, and Belial was the one who screwed up Azmodan's plan, thus ruining the assault on Heaven. I don't see this guy as anything special.
Ok, please let this be the last time this is said, this thread is not the place to discuss the 3 mouthed demon, whether it be Belial, Diablo, or santa claus. That said the idea that the multiple mouths linking to to Belial to confuse them as to whether or not they are lying has merit, but is pure speculation at best with nothing in lore to support it.
Now I'd like to reply to Yeahbro and keep it on topic. Where did we hear about Azmodans death? I recall nothing about that. Where is Belial mentioned as the last of the lesser evils? I'm aware of two places where Belial is mentioned, and in both he's in conflict with a living Azmodan. Furthermore, Cain can't be Belial for these reasons: 1. his thoughts are in his journal. Unless that journal has been planted for someone else to read, I can't see it being Belial. 2. the lore panel states that Cain has been walking around for the last 20 years carrying guilt over what has happened. He wouldn't do that if he were Belial.
A few demons remained loyal to the brothers through the Dark Exile and they were pretty much all decimated in D2. So if the brothers came back and assaulted Sanctuary they would have no real power in terms of sheer numbers. I doubt if the brothers returned they would be near as powerful as they were when the Dark Exile took place.
Nice theory, but it's speculation. For all we know they still have legions left.
And what if Hell's civil war is over? The victor would have 160 legions under his command.
Wrong. A war that hs been lasting this long would have a lot of casualties. As such, they would be significantly reduced. That, and l repeat that last we heard Belial was doing poorly in the war, so I doubt it would be him.
The game has all new demons, which probably means that there is a new demon lord commanding them. Lesser Evil is not the same as Lesser Power.
Your argument about new demons is actually decent, but it's hardly conclusive. Now, about Lesser Evils and Lesser Powers, from all the examples that we have seen, yes it is. In the manual they are described as such. The other lesser evils which we've encountered were vastly inferior to the primes we know now. The only reasons Belial and Azmodan were able to beat the Primes are they were united and had the backing of the other Lessers, and they had superiority in numbers. Since that time they have lost their unity and support (seems Duriel and Andariel went back to their true masters). They've also sustained heavey losses from both kicking out the Primes (which once again, it appears they were manipulated into that), and their own little civil war.
My main problem with the idea that Belial is the big bad is that while he may command a demon army, he himself individually is to weak to be a final boss. I will be supremely dissapointed if I have to fight through Belials Army just to kill someone on the same power and difficulty level as Andariel or Duriel.
On an unrelated note, your while your kabraxis theory is off topic, I like it and encourage you to post a thread on it.
Again I say, Diablo 0 Belial 80. That demon looks nothing like Diablo, or any other prime evil for that fact. Belial is the lord of lies. 20 years of peace? How could there be 20 years of peace when the gate that held the burning hells back was broken? I'll tell you why. Belial is like a master of puppets, hiding in the shadows till his followers become the majority. Dark Cultists anyone? I'll stir up some evidence, just give me a sec.
Ok, I'd love to see your evidence, and please, do show that your getting this from somewhere. I referenced a manual, a novel (which just so happens to be the only two pieces of literature that bother to mention your lord of lies), and an in-game quote. Whatchya got.
In the mean time, I'll pull apart your current argument. First off, your 80 to 0 number almost flies, but somehow or other I doubt it on account that in the last two games Diablo had no trouble getting help. Trust me I killed a ton of demons to get to him and his brothers. That and the Prime Evils wasted 2/3 of the combined forces of Azmodan and Belial. I should think they'd make short work of what's left of Belials army. Next, your idea that Belial is pulling strings in the mortal world: with the sole exception of one occurrence in Legacy of Blood, Belial has shown a lack of interest in mortal affairs, prefering to either fight the Heavens, or, in fact, squabble with Azmodan. On that note that particular exception to the rule didn't go so well for him, so I doubt he'd try again.
Belial is a Lesser Evil. Lesser Evil = Lesser boss.
I personally think Belial might play a minor role, maybe a big one, I don't know.
Amen to both. This is not the place to discuss the 3 header.
Now, back on topic, I'd like to set the record strait on a few things. From the Diablo Classic Manual we learn Azmodan and Belial marshaled the ranks of hell onto Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, on account of the fact that the Primes were more interrested in mortals than fighting Heaven directly, whilst Azmodan and Belial wanted to take the fight to heaven. Azmodan had the bright idea of sending the Primes into the mortal realm to distract the Heavenly hosts so they could press their attack. The Primes took out 2/3rds of the traitors demon army, but were banished. However, instead of executing their plan, the two lesser evils resorted to a very long civil war, ruining Azmodan's plan (this does not reflect well on Belial, or Azmodan). From the book Legacy of Blood we learn that the war has gone poorly for Belial. Furthermore, we learn from Izual in D2 that the Prime Evils, upon capturing Izual and obtaining the intel on the soul stones, planned their inprisonment, thus they most likely planned their banishment.
That said, I don't think Belial is as cool as people give him credit for. I expect him to show up as a boss in the first two acts, someone who will be killed and then left behind as we move on to deal with real problems such as the Primes, not squabling lesser evils who fail to recognize the potential of humanity, and who come up with a decent plan (even if they were manipulated into it), and then blow it on a petty rivalry.
Half of the untrue Diablo 3 rumors up until this announcement centered around Belial. Now that the real McCoy is here, I'm still seeing way too much of him for my tastes, with claims that he is the main boss, or even that he has been Tyrael all along. At the risk of being flamed by Belial's faithful worshipers, I have to ask why? He's a lesser evil, similar in power to Andariel and Duriel. Reading Legacy of Blood, I gathered two things about Belial: 1. Most people haven't even heard of him. 2. His war with Azmodan has been going badly. I've got nothing personal against him. I'd love to see him in the game. I'd love to kill him within the first 2 acts and move on and fry my bigger fish.
P.S. While Belial was indeed a demon prince in Hebrew mythology, the word also meant worthless to them.
