MTV Multiplayer interviewed Blizzard Entertainment execs Paul Sams, Chief Operating Officer, and Frank Pearce, Executive Vice President of Product Development to talk about Diablo III.

On why “Diablo III” isn’t an MMO:
Sams: When we’re deciding what type of game we’re going to make, we look at what the gameplay experience is going to be. We talked to the team a lot and say, “What is it you want to play? What is it that you want to make?” And we really felt like “Diablo” is a franchise that is very cooperative in the manner in which you play it. We felt like the gameplay experience that we had delivered historically with being in a non-persistent world was the right way to do it for this particular product. I think a lot of people expected us to say that this is going to be an MMO — maybe an obvious choice in a lot of people’s minds. But really, the bottom line is we thought the right game to make was “Diablo III” in the way that we’ve announced it.

Following the announcement of Diablo III at the 2008 Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals, merely 9 days ago, Gamasutra reports that sales of the seven-year-old RPG hack 'n slash game Diablo II Battle Chest has risen considerably on last week's worldwide sale charts.

The Diablo II Battle Chest took the lead on North American PC sales as the #1 in the Top 5 Sales. On the United Kingdom charts, the Diablo II Battle Chest received the 4th spot.

At this rate, Game Stores around the world will be out of stock of any remaining copies. If your area already is out of stock and you wish to get your hands on Diablo II and Lord of Destruction expansion, your only option at this point is to head to the Blizzard Store to purchase a digital download of the game. It is now available after the Diablo III announcement. Blizzard Entertainment most likely foresaw this prior to the announcement. A clever planning.

Bashiok talks his view on PK and cooperative PvP play in Diablo III.
We're - in general - not big fans of griefing for any game. It's really only "fun" for one person, and that definition of fun isn't generally something we're going to want to encourage. It's far more positive to encourage and support meaningful and skillful options and systems within a game, than a mechanic for people to instantly turn against one another for no meaningful gameplay reasons.

I definitely remember running with my friends, and someone toggles it, and bam everyone is dead and your one friend is laughing. Ok, ok, good joke I guess, and then you run back and *bam*, you've toggled it to get them back. After a while everyone usually agrees to a truce because it's just a waste of time. But I also remember running with random players and losing extremely nice items because of it, not cool. I'm sure that it was a feature that was right up some people's alleys, I won't deny there are some that would enjoy nothing more than to see others frustrated, but is that truly something that should be encouraged through design - if not directly opposed?

We have a large focus on cooperative play for Diablo III, and the mechanics and design decisions related to multiplayer are likely going to be based on supporting and encouraging it as much as possible, and not breaking it down.

That doesn't mean that PvP won't have its own focus, but those are details and features we aren't yet discussing.

  • published the article Diablo III Producer Justifies Controversial Art Direction: Color Is Your Friend
Diablo III Lead Producer Keith Lee responded to criticism toward the Art Direction of Diablo III during a brief interview with MTV Multiplayer during the Blizzard Worldwide Invitationals. Who would have foreseen that in less than a week from the official announcement a Petition Online would have over 23,000 signatures of people who wish to express their disappointment toward how Diablo III artistic direction is being done.

Personally, I liked what I saw -- and I saw that demo right on my face on a HUGE screen at the event with plenty of detail. The outdoors naturally need to look sharp and colorful, while the dungeons have that dark ambience. There is also obviously a change of illumination between 2D and 3D environments.

Keith Lee - One of the things that we considered when we were working on the visuals for Diablo III is the fact that color is your friend. We feel that color actually helps to create a lot of highlights in the game so that there is contrast. A great analogy is like in Lord of the Rings. Not everything is dark. It allows you to see what a creepy dungeon can be like but if everything is dark it doesn't allow you to have a lot of contrast.

He continued: Diablo I and Diablo II are darker, and I think that the one of the main reasons why is the fact that in Diablo I, you're basically in a dungeon the whole time. And in contrast to Diablo III, you'll be exploring outdoors, you'll be in dungeons, you'll be experiencing so many different areas. We want to bring as much variety as we can when you're playing the game so that you're excited to check out new environments. We don't want everything to look the same and that's really what we're trying to aim for.
UPDATE: This quote was from the same day the game was announced, so it doesn't reflect much on the afterward fan response to the game. In short, he did not read the petition at that point. However, for your knowledge, I submitted today the Diablo III Art Design Direction Survey thread to Bashiok (Diablo III Community Manager). Your feedback was confirmed to have been received.

Said thread contains links to three of the online petitions.

Some Game Shops are listing Diablo III for pre-order in UK at the price of 24.99 Euros. It is incredible how some of these shops claim the game is shipping in 149 days when the other classes have not been announced yet. There is much more to be revealed. So don't hold your breath until Blizzard gives fans the official release date via Press Release. Below is a very informative summary for you to digest:

Diablo III is being developed as the definitive action role-playing game, and a true continuation of the Diablo series. Players will create a hero from one of five distinct classes, such as barbarian or witch doctor, each equipped with an array of spells and abilities. As these heroes adventure through rich and varied settings, unraveling an epic storyline and engaging in combat with hordes of monsters and challenging bosses, they'll grow in experience and ability and acquire items of incredible power.

The game takes place on Sanctuary, a world of dark fantasy. Unbeknownst to most of its inhabitants, Sanctuary was saved some twenty years ago from the demonic forces of the underworld by a few brave and powerful heroes. Most of those warriors who directly faced Hell's armies - and were fortunate enough to survive - went mad from their experiences. And most of the others have buried their haunted memories and pushed the horrors from their thoughts. In Diablo III, players will return to Sanctuary to confront evil in its many forms once again.

Diablo III will be a fitting sequel to Diablo II, with the easy interface, fast-paced action, and visceral gameplay that Diablo players have come to expect and enjoy. It will also include many new features that will take the Diablo action-RPG experience to the next level!

    Diablo III for PC Features:

    * Five powerful character classes to choose from, including the barbarian and witch doctor.
    * Brand-new 3D graphics engine enhanced with spectacular visual effects and Havok physics.
    * Numerous indoor and outdoor areas detailing new regions in the world of Sanctuary.
    * Interactive environments with dangerous traps and obstacles, and destructible elements.
    * Randomly generated worlds bolstered by scripted events for endless and dynamic gameplay.
    * Vast assortment of fiendish monsters, with unique attack patterns and behaviors.
    * New quest system and character-customisation options for the ultimate action RPG experience.
    * Multiplayer functionality over Battle.net with support for cooperative and competitive play.

Kazo has been awesome taking notes on his own and has dispatched a few screenshots and info from the gameplay video.

Kazo: "I watched the gameplay video again and took some pictures from moments when the items and skill descriptions are visible. Some new type of items that dropped from Diablo3 monsters in the video:

    - Minor Lethality Rune
    - Minor Power Rune
    - Ancient Medallion
    - Minor Energy Rune
    - Chipped Star Topaz - New "star" variant
    - Elixir of Vitality I
    - Elixir of Willpower I

    INVENTORY
Blizzard said they have plans for making the inventory much better.
In the video we can see room for 30 items. It seems each item will have it's own reserved space with no size variations, similar to the bag system of World of Warcraft. The Barbarian, however, has only 12 item spaces "active" or "available", other 18 being "grayed out". This means characters in D3 will be able to carry variable sizes of bags. If you look at the bottom of the inventory space, there are 4 grayed out slots for bags, similar to World of Warcraft. The icon for these bags is the same as the main inventory screen icon.

    SCREENSHOTS
    - Battlecry
    - Furious Charge
    - Hammer of the Ancients
    - Horrify
    - Items 1
    - Items 2
    - UI Skills
    - Wall of Zombies

  • published the article Diablo III Overview
    What is Diablo III?
We’re developing Diablo III to be the definitive action role-playing game, and a true continuation of the Diablo series. Players will create a hero from one of five distinct classes, such as barbarian or witch doctor, each equipped with an array of spells and abilities. As these heroes adventure through rich and varied settings, unraveling an epic storyline and engaging in combat with hordes of monsters and challenging bosses, they’ll grow in experience and ability and acquire items of incredible power.

The game takes place on Sanctuary, a world of dark fantasy. Unbeknownst to most of its inhabitants, Sanctuary was saved some twenty years ago from the demonic forces of the underworld by a few brave and powerful heroes. Most of those warriors who directly faced Hell’s armies -- and were fortunate enough to survive -- went mad from their experiences.

It will also include many new features that will take the Diablo action-RPG experience to the next level. We look forward to going into much more detail on our plans for Diablo III as development on the game progresses.

What’s new about Diablo III compared to the previous Diablo games?
Exciting new classes like the witch doctor bring new gameplay options to the table. Returning classes, like the barbarian, have been completely redone with new skills to give them a feel unique to Diablo III. New customization options will provide for an even greater level of character specialization than the previous Diablo games, allowing the player to create unique characters brimming with power.

Diablo III is powered by a new graphics engine that can display characters and hordes of monsters in lush, fully 3D environments. Powerful special-effects systems and Havok-powered physics allow the player to lay waste to Hell’s minions in spectacular ways.
Also, Diablo III builds on the random environments of the previous Diablo games by introducing a host of new ways to create random scripted events throughout the game.

This creates a dense and exciting world alive with quests, NPCs, dynamic encounters, and viciously challenging new monsters and bosses. Diablo III’s environments add a great deal of interactivity to the game, including destructible elements and environmental obstacles that can be turned against your enemies.

In addition, Diablo III will benefit from Battle.net upgrades that will provide some exciting new features for players. Cooperative online play remains a primary focus, with multiple enhancements being planned to make connecting with your friends easier and cooperative gameplay even more fun. We’ll have more details on all these aspects as well as other exciting new features at a later date.

Can you give an overview of Diablo III’s storyline?
It has been twenty years since the events of Diablo II. Of those who faced the Lords of Hatred, Terror, and Destruction in the battle over the fate of Sanctuary, there are few still living who can bear to remember the horrors that the Prime Evils wrought upon the world. And of those who did not witness the terrible events firsthand, most believe the stories to be little more than myth. But something evil is stirring once again in Tristram, and it may already have claimed its first victim: Deckard Cain.

Will there be any other familiar faces in Diablo III (other than Deckard Cain)?
Yes. Players will encounter several new characters as well as a number of characters from the previous games.

Will players be visiting any familiar locations in Diablo III, such as Tristram?
Yes, definitely. Players will return to Tristram and certain other locations from the previous games, and they’ll be exploring new areas of Sanctuary as well.

How many character classes are included in Diablo III? What are they?
Five character classes will be included in the game, two of which, the barbarian and witch doctor, were revealed when the game was announced at the 2008 Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational. The other classes will be announced at a later date.

Will players be able to choose the gender of their character, regardless of class?
Yes. Players will be able to create male and female characters for all five classes.

Will Diablo III be playable over Battle.net? What new features can we expect?
Yes, Diablo III will be playable over Battle.net, and Battle.net will offer some exciting new features to enhance players’ Diablo III experience. We’ll announce specifics and go into much more detail at a later date.

Will there be a single-player component in addition to multiplayer?
Yes. In addition to battling the hordes of Hell cooperatively with friends over Battle.net, players will be able to adventure through the world of Diablo III solo. More details on both the single-player and multiplayer experience will be revealed at a later date.

What will questing be like in Diablo III? Will it be similar to Diablo II?
Our plans for the story and quest mechanics are still under wraps. We’ll go into detail on those elements of the game at a later date. We can say, however, that we expect to have class-based quests in addition to the main story-line quests.

What engine is Diablo III running on? What graphical enhancements are included?
Diablo III runs on a custom 3D game engine for rendering full-3D characters and environments. The 3D game engine not only simulates advanced animation sequences and sound effects, but also uses a custom physics engine that allows for realistic object dynamics and cloth simulation.

What are the system requirements for Diablo III?
We’ll announce specific system requirements at a later date.

When will Diablo III be released?
It’s too early to estimate Diablo III’s release date. As with all Blizzard Entertainment games, our goal is to create a game that is as fun, balanced, and polished as possible. We intend to take as much time developing Diablo III as is necessary to ensure the game meets our own high expectations and those of our players.

Will the game be released in multiple countries? Will the release be simultaneous? Which countries and what languages will Diablo III be localized in?
As with all of our games, our goal with Diablo III is to release the game simultaneously in as many regions as possible, and to localize the game in several languages. We’ll have more details to share about countries, languages, and specific dates as we get closer to release.

Will Diablo III be available on Windows and Mac simultaneously?
Yes. As with all of Blizzard Entertainment’s recent releases, Diablo III will ship for both Windows and Mac simultaneously.

How much will Diablo III cost? Where can I buy this game?
Pricing and availability for Diablo III will be determined and announced closer to the release of the game.

We have just arrived to the Invitationals for our second day. The Diablo III Lore Panel will start in about thirty minutes, 10:00am Paris Time. Stay tuned, and start posting questions at the Diablo fans forums. I can pick maybe one or two questions. Two rows of fans line up for a shot at asking questions. Only a few of them are taken, so make sure to stay on topic. If the question benefits the playerbase, I will pick it. It may also depend if the screening staff recommends the question.

UPDATE 11am Paris Time: Special thanks to Kazo for transcribing the Q&A session. I was able to pass one of the questions to the Diablo III developers onstage. This is the transcript:

    =================
    Q&A

Q: We destroyed Diablo, how do you justify him coming back again?
A: You don''t know for sure Diablo is going back. Too complicated to answer at this point without going too much into the story.

Q: In the previous game we had a quest to get the Horadric Cube, will it be there again or similar items acquired through quests?
A: We want the lore to drive gameplay. With certainty there will be quests related to lore.

Q: What all places from Diablo II will we see and how they changed in 20 years?
A: Game starts in New Tristram - outside of Old Tristram. Cain will be there with some other previous NPCs - no specifics at this point.

Q: Do you want to make new villains?
A: Yes and no. There are some new ones. There are seven lesser evil demons, and some are not accounted for that may be introduced.

Q: Are you going to add more easter eggs such as the cow level?
A: We don't have a full list but I'm sure there will be, there are in all Blizzard games.

Q: Inarius was the angel who was allowed to enter hell. Is he still there?
A: As far as we know, he's still there.

Q: What do we get to blow up and smash?
A: It's something we're constantly exploring, we want to hate as much as we can.

Q: How is it possible that people of the world forgot about the events that happened in D2 already. For example what happened in Kurast, it's hard to believe people would just let go.
A: Some through reason, some through denial ....

Diablo III - World Lore and Environment Art Panel

    Caldeum
Leonard Boyarsky - Lead World Designer of Diablo III began the discussion panel for the

Diablo III World Lore and Environment Art Panel. Skovos and Caldeum are some of the zones to

be explored in Diablo III. Skovos is an ancient city where the rogues come from.

    - Richer History and Deeper characters: NPCs will say where they come from to make it feel

like you are playing in a living world to reflect their culture and philosophies. Caldeum

population have a eastern kind of look.

Brian Morrisroe - Art Director of Diablo III discussed the following:

    Story
    - Purpose of story:
    Give context to player's actions
    - Deepen experiene of the Diablo universe.

Player voice is a feature to be implemented in Diablo III, making the storytelling more

engaging. Your character will feel more involved in the action as often happens in most

    RPGs.

Use environment to tell story. The story takes place 20 years after Lord of Destruction.

    Story until now

    Twenty years later
    - Cain convinced Hell will invade
    - Events of Diablo 1 and Diablo II seen as legend.

Some of the characters of previous games may still be alive.

    Why hasn't Hell invaded?

What has happened to Tyrael? He was forced to destroy the Worldstone. Where has he been ever

since? Did it changed him as a result of this? Everyone expected Hell to invade Sanctuary,

but for twenty years nothing has happened.

    Respecting the pastiablo II
    - Expanded upon original
    - Introduced new areas of the world

    Updating a lassisc
    - Exploring a new visual look
    - Respect the Franchise
    - Expectations set by the previous games

    Stylization over realism
    - Stylized does not mean cartoony
    - Altered reality
    - Consistency in style creates believability

Blizzard is exploring the idea of bringing a unique look to the Diablo universe, but not so

    cartoony.

    Strong silhouettes
    - Big bold shaps
    - Adds to epic feel
    - Helps overall readability

Adds to the epic feel. Everything in real life is so straight, but in the game Blizzard tries

adding odd silhouettes, and characteristics that highlight scenarious and make them

    interesting and vibrant.

    Don't be afraid of color
    - color is used to convey mood
    - Selectie pallettes establish horror vibe
    - Accent colors draw attention

    Dynamic animations
    - Bring life to an otherwise static scene
    - Background movement adds believability
    - Destructible objects are just fun!

You can break stuff to help you harm or kill monster. It is freaking cool to break stuff in

    scenes, stomping stuff.

    Supporting the gameplay
    - Philosophies to support play experience
If you don't know where you are going and can't distinguish monsters in the environment it

doesn't make the game more enjoyable, and that's something Blizzard is perfecting from the

ground up in the development of environment and gameplay.

    Environment pipeline
    - Design layout

The artists discuss how to create dungeons making a room at a time, and later glueing them

together with exits and entrances that interconnect each room.

Only have 1 left, and the current one is at 40%. If you are at WWI and you have a cable or adapter for USA 3 plugs to USA 2 plugs email me at blizzplanet@fanforce.net

Mike Morhaime showed a cinematic of Diablo 3, now we are getting a gameplay video.

The Barbarian in this video fights over 20 mobs and he dispatches them easily. You can destroy and interact with the environment -- this is physics at work here. You can access the character window similar to World of Warcraft. Weapons can be enchanted. The barbarian is now doing whirlwind to deal with powerful enemies. Some lootable chests have traps ... the example given -- the chest activated a trap where many skeletal casters spawned to attack the barbarian. Deckard cain is talking in-game now in a interesting interface for RPG.

We see now a Witch Doctor class that can summon Mongrels as pets. He can create a wall of zombies to block incoming attacks of mobs from reaching you while you annihilate them. The Witch Doctor is a ranger basicaly casting from afar. The gameplay is about to end but before they want to show us what a real fight is in multiplayer with a witch doctor, a barbarian and a rogue. Holy cow this huge beast with four legs and a huge body that takes haf the screen is fighting the three classes. The beast is named Siegebreaker assault beast. It has a lot of HP but the 3 classes are doing heavy damage to it. It dropped an amulet and gold. The creature just exploded after looting and hundreds of skeletons now fighthing onscreen. Diablo 3 logo seals the gameplay video.

PARIS, France – June 28, 2008 – Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today revealed Diablo® III, the newest entry in its critically acclaimed action role-playing-game franchise. The announcement was made during the 2008 Blizzard Entertainment® Worldwide Invitational at the Porte de Versailles Convention Centre in Paris, France. A cinematic trailer and an extended gameplay demonstration with commentary from the development team introduced the game to the thousands of players in attendance.

“We’ve wanted to expand on the epic story and gameplay elements of the Diablo universe for some time now,” stated Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We know that players have also been long awaiting a return to the series, so we’re very excited to be sharing this announcement with Blizzard gamers here in Paris and around the world today.”

Diablo III will pick up the story twenty years after the events of Diablo II. Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal have been defeated, but the Worldstone, which once shielded the inhabitants of the world of Sanctuary from the forces of both Heaven and Hell, has been destroyed, and evil once again stirs in Tristram. Playing as a hero from one of five distinct character classes, players will acquire powerful items, spells, and abilities as they explore new and familiar areas of Sanctuary and battle hordes of demons to safeguard the world from the horrors that have arisen. The first two characters classes -- the barbarian and the witch doctor -- were shown as part of the announcement at the event today in Paris.

Diablo III will feature a custom 3D-graphics engine to render lush indoor and outdoor areas of Sanctuary with a high level of detail and vivid special effects. The game’s physics-enhanced environments will be interactive and destructible, offering traps and obstacles that create added danger for players and monsters alike. These elements, along with a new quest system and random scripted events, will be integrated into the game’s random-level generator, giving Diablo III the ultimate combination of dynamic gameplay and replayability. Cooperative and competitive play will be available online through an upgraded version of Blizzard Entertainment’s renowned online gaming service, Battle.net®.

Blizzard Entertainment is developing Diablo III for simultaneous release on the Windows® and Macintosh® PC platforms. Further information about the game, including details on the other character classes, major new features for the single-player and multiplayer components, system requirements, pricing, and availability, will be announced as development progresses.
