I completely agree and can't believe I didn't think of this lighting radius that was implemented in D2. It's not neccesarily realistic, but adds a nice touch and except Diablo2 and Lod I haven't seen a game that has this in the exact same fashion. Light sources in other games light everything around like a bulb, In diablo it only slightly threw lighting on the surface it came close to and left everything else in a strange form of darkness which doesn't go side by side with the laws of physics, but I liked the effect it produced nonetheless.

It was especially eye candy while moving in nightime through a lot of columns, trees etc. Could have been an oversight or somekind of bug.

I can remember I also shifted through the perspetive to be able to compare the difference it had on the rendering engine.

Exactly. I would say it's not realistic in our world, but in the Diablo world I would imagine it is.
I don't know much Macedonijan. But I know a little.

I don't think the graphics suck at all, I just think they don't fit in greatly with the Diablo world. I dunno, I know it may seem annoying but for a lot of people it's not a game, it's THE game and people really want BLizzard to do the right thing with this. If people are concerned, sure they should speak their minds, that's what forums are for.

    I agree.
But not to sound like an asshole, couldn't you post it in on the other graphic thread? now ppl will post - again?@!? its only alpha stage with 5-10 min gameplay footage

Yeah, think I should post my first post in the graphics thread then let this one die?
Also yeah it's only alpha, but that just means it could go either way, having topics like this etc show what we want etc and Blizz may take that into consideration

DUnno the dark places just forced me to navigate with the map rather than the game itself because it was sometimes hard to see some doors etc. Maybe there should be such things in dungeons or something. But the light effects in d2 wasn't so great or realistic. Like that brazier there it should really light up a bigger area.

That's not to say they can't work on it. But IMO that's one of the main things that made D2s dungeons etc scary

Don't you all think that there should be something implemented such as light radius. That's what I think gave Diablo 2 a really frightening feeling in dungeons etc, not knowing where the enemies are, not knowing what they are until they are right on top of you?

TBH I think the best way to fix the graphics would be to take out this green/blue tone throughout the game, slightly make the graphics more gritty/sharp and reduce saturation, this combined with the light radius, or similar effect, would add a really eery vibe. This wouldn't change the graphics drastically at all, just make it better.

I have yet to see many people mention this, all I see is saturation etc etc DARKEN DARKEN, I think it needs to be to a degree, but tbh Light radius did wonders for d2.

Items. I hate the WoW gold currency. Trading was such a big and awesome part of D2. I hope they don't wanna turn everything into that shit game WoW.

I love Diablo, Diablo 2 and so far love Diablo 3. Still play D2.

Diablo fans said that Diablo 2 was too colorful and "cartoony" as well. Yet everyone loved D2.

Diablo was so dark that selecting monsters, even with the outlines, was difficult.

The lower levels in Diablo were actually very bright. Some of the demons were almost bright orange.

Diablo 3's colors are subdued. The lack of very dark blacks and the predominance of mid tone greys in D3 make the colors look brighter.

Blood red against mid grey is more vibrant than against black.

The model movement in Diablo is very stiff. A lot of the model movements in D2 are stiff. Exaggerated example, the player characters walking. Character movements in D3 look very natural and smooth, aka "realistic".

One's Cartoon is another Realism. I have forearms bigger than Popeye's. I'm flesh and blood. I'm real. Popeye is not.

Look at a shadow upon a white surface during the day. Is it black? No. Is it grey? No. It is actually light blue. Go observe.

Realistic moving "cartoon" characters are more real than "stick up the butt" moving "realistic" characters. Old school example... Darkstalker graphics fantastic, Mortal Combat graphics crap.

Green hued dungeons are creepy. Deep purple shadows are frightening. Bright orange locus are threatening.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One's opinion depends on one's perception.

Polygons are not Sprites. Sprites, great details crappy movement. Polygones crappy details great movement.

Well said. I agree. But it's still a while from being released and they said they are going to focus on making it scary and the right balance, I think they don't have it perfect yet, so only time will tell. ATM i'm not stressing at all. I'm going to wait to actualy PLAY it.

I think they have to make a compromise. Something in the middle of these pictures. It needs colour, but not as much as they have now and they really really need to take out this green tinge.

I think they are going in the right direction with this. I personally like it. It will take more skill and stops us spamming the pot button.

I see there are a lot of people saying that we shouldn't complain, etc, that we should thank blizzard for making the game.

However, what we have to understand is that NOW is the time to be critic of the game. NOW the community has to step forward and "complain" because there's probably still time to rectify certain design decisions, and elements of the game that are not yet set in stone.

Like the OP said, the color/design of the game is too fantasy looking. Diablo ISN'T FANTASY. IT'S NOT TOLKIEN. It's the struggle of humanity against the powers of HELL (and maybe heaven, too). I'ts a story that could fit in the Bible, for Christ's sake. Things need to be darker, more edgy.

Extremely well said. They are saying they are trying to make colour scary, it can be sure, but it just doesn't FIT IN into the world. At the LEAST they have to make a compromise because they are drifting away from the game and world we all love so much. These pictures are going in the right direction but IMO they are a bit to drastic. There needs to be a place in the middle. Also wheres the Dark Ambiance? Wheres the dead bodies, pentagrams. They be going for a game for a broad audience. But shit. Look at D2 look at the people it attracted. Look at the broad audience it attracted, everywhere I look D2 fans are popping up and the uproar is stuff these colour schemes.

That being said, I like colour, I play WoW and am not bothered by the colour and shape of the objects etc, because it fits in. Diablo is so much different and TBH what they have shown us dosn't represent despair and destruction; especially the dungeons. This blue/green tinge REALLY has to go. It's now that we have to speak our minds and present our ideas to Blizzard and try to make a difference to it.
