... Thinking about it .. you run into a room and see all the important details first. It's the usual suspects of a random design. You have a group of melee walking right up to your front door while you can clearly see a larger named mob probably a caster to the rear of the group with ranged mobs emerging from his sides. Maybe archers maybe casters that's whatever. If you have not got the hp pool or armor rating one good idea might be to sick the merc on the melee mobs while you charge through and head straight up to pound down that named .. then the casters .. then the trash melee. That is again if you realize your armor or hps are not good enough to deal with the names nukes and aoes while you also have to take hits from the melee and archers and work your way from the ground up. This is just one useful manner we could use the mercs. I know we have all learned to fight without them by pulling small amounts of the monsters at a time and killing them off until eventually we decide we can handle the main group, but it's nice to know we have many strategies for any given situation.
